The cover was very cute and sparkly but the stories are not at all about the palace pets! The stories are all about the main disney princesses with these pups inserted into the story line. For instance, the 1st story is really about the prince finding the pup "pumpkin" for cinderella as an anniversary gift, not at all about the actual palace pet named pumpkin. So not at all what I was expecting but luckily my daughter loves the princesses as well.

New from the author of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and coauthor of the I Funny series with James Patterson! Celebrate the power of imagination with this action-packed New York Times bestseller that shows that sometimes the real story starts after you close the book!    What if your favorite characters came to life? Billy’s spending the summer in a lakeside cabin that belongs to the mysterious Dr. Libris. But something strange is going on. Besides the security cameras everywhere, there’s Dr. Libris’s private bookcase. Whenever Billy opens the books inside, he can hear sounds coming from the island in the middle of the lake. The clash of swords. The twang of arrows. Sometimes he can even feel the ground shaking. It’s almost as if the stories he’s reading are coming to life! But that’s impossible . . . isn’t it?   “A wonderful tale. . . . This book is like no other I’ve read. It’s a complete original.” —James Patterson"Kids will enjoy the cartoonish mayhem, especially given Grabenstein's breezy narrative voice and jaunty wit....as in 'Lemoncello', there is a winning generosity and sweetness to the story's telling."--The New York Times"Chris Grabenstein gleefully plunders great works of literature for his cast of secondary characters . . . a madcap mash-up that 8-to-12 year olds will want to devour in big gulps."—The Wall Street Journal"Effortlessly readable and a whole lot of fun." — Booklist Reviews

The Island of Dr. Libris, by Chris Grabenstein

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Billy is not thrilled to be spending the summer in a cabin on a lake in the middle of nowhere. His mom and dad aren't together, and he's worried this change may be permanent. Their cabin is owned by Dr. Libris, who also owns the mysterious island in the lake. With a lack of technology, and bullies as neighbors, Billy resorts to searching for a key to open the bookcase in Dr. Libris' study. What he unlocks brings classic books to life—when he reads the books, he hears the action somehow occurring on the island. Curious, he ventures out to the island to explore and discovers the unbelievable—somehow the stories he is reading are actually happening. When he meets Hercules, Zeus, Robin Hood, Tom Sawyer, and others, he becomes embroiled in their adventures and unwittingly causes the storylines to collide. When Billy brings his neighbors, Walter, and Walter's sister, out to the island, they all face treacherous foes including the giant from Jack in the Beanstalk and a space lizard from Walter's comic book. Billy is left trying to figure out whether Dr. Libris is behind everything, whether his own mind may be the culprit, and whether or not he can use the island to help save his parents' marriage. While the plot is unique, the story feels too far-fetched to be believable, and lacks the magic of Grabenstein's Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library (Random, 2013).—Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA

Review "A wonderful tale… This book is like no other I've read. It's a complete original." -- James Patterson"In this entertaining literary romp, the author includes references to over 20 classic tales, from Aesop's Fables to Holes. For curious readers, he's listed the titles at the end, but familiarity with these stories is not required to appreciate this fast-paced fantasy. Readers will wish their summers were so eventful." - Kirkus Reviews  "Readers will appreciate Billy’s cleverness in solving his ever-growing problems, as these literary characters make plenty of trouble outside the confines of their intended stories. Effortlessly readable and a whole lot of fun." - Booklist Reviews

By Deborah V I originally got this to read with my granddaughters, but after reading the first few chapters I felt it was "too adult" for their ages (9ish). In the first chapter we learn Billy's parents are separated and they argue over money constantly since Billy's dad likes to spend it foolishly. I could see them asking all sorts of questions about separations, divorce, grown ups and their money etc. Maybe next year?So I read it for me! It was a cute story where favorite characters come to life from books. It's quirky, has some laugh out loud moments and of course has Billy as the hero in his efforts to become a family again with his mom and dad. I love to read and have read a lot of the books where the character came to life--and Pollyanna being one of my faves. One of the nice things the author does is list, at the end of the book, all of the books he pulled characters from so that you can go back and read or reread any that catch your fancy.

Grabenstein is so clever By Mira Dugan Having read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library not too long ago, I was very excited to try Grabenstein’s latest, The Island of Dr. Libris. I am so impressed by the depth of the plot goes into the story. The author has thought of all sorts of delightful details and tied them together perfectly. In The Island of Dr. Libris, Billy is staying at a cabin owned by the Doctor who has an extensive collection literature. As Billy checks out the stories, the action of each tale comes to life. Billy gets to see some amazing classic stories in action, but none more interesting than the one that helps him to get started on a treasure hunt.I don’t know what to compare this book to other than the author’s Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s library. They are different from other young adult novels, but completely enjoyable. Fun characters, classic literature, puzzles, and completely captivating. If you liked Grabenstein’s previous novel as my kids and I did, I think you’re sure to like this one too.

Perfect for readers ages 8-11 (depending on reading level) By Super Shopper If you like books and puzzles, then this is a great book for you. It is from the author of "Escape from Lemoncello's Library", and is similar, but does not contain the same characters. This book is about Billy. He goes to a cabin on an island. The stories that he reads come to life; three muskateers, hercules, etc. He finds a bottle that tells him there is treasure on the island, and the story becomes a treasure hunt. Both of my boys (ages 11 and 9 (both very advanced readers), enjoyed the book. It was very easy for them to read, and they both finished it in 3 days. One of them liked Lemoncello more, the other liked this book better. Either way, they like the ease and adventure displayed by this author. One thing they liked better about Lemoncello was that there was a puzzle to solve in the book. Both wish this book had contained something similar. We highly recommend this book.

The book itself is very vague and incredibly short. It offered little to NO information regarding how to construct any of the items or structures it mentiones. I feel ripped off and wish I could get my money back. Stay away, this book is a complete waste of money.

This rediscovered gem by Caldecott-winning illustrator Roger Duvoisin is perfect for a new generation of little girls who love dolls. In the city of Paris, a beautiful but lonely doll sits on a shelf in an antique shop. She’s surrounded by old vases and teapots, but longs for a friend to play with. There is one little girl who would dearly love to own the doll, but Marie could never afford such a precious item. So Marie has to settle for admiring the doll through the window on her way home from school. But Marie and this doll are clearly meant for one another, and Marie will make sure that the doll has a home where she is loved. First published in the 1950s but long out of print, this rediscovered gem by Roger Duvoisin and his wife, Louise Fatio, is available again, ready to be read to little girls—and dolls—of a new generation.

A Doll For Marie, by Louise Fatio

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—First published in 1957 but long out of print, this rediscovered title by the remarkable husband-and-wife creative team is available again, ready to be read by a new generation of children—and their dolls (a mini book is included). Roger Duvoisin illustrated more than 100 books, many by his wife, Louise Fatio. He won the Caldecott Medal in 1947 for White Snow, Bright Snow and a Caldecott Honor in 1966 for Hide and Seek Fog, both written by Alvin Tresselt. Louise Fatio is probably best known for her "Happy Lion" books, all illustrated by her husband. In this story, a fancy, beautifully dressed doll sits on a shelf in an antique shop in Paris, surrounded by a Persian vase and a Chinese teapot, but longs for a different fate. "'This is no way for a doll to live,' she sighed. 'If only I had a little girl to play with.'" One girl, the mailman's daughter Marie, walks past on her way to school and regularly admires the doll, but could never afford such a pricey item. One day the doll is purchased by an old woman, but her home is not much different from the antique shop. However, once the old woman's pets get a hold of the newcomer, her fancy clothes and accessories are ruined and the doll is left in the gutter, only to be rescued by Marie and given the kind of home she's always longed for. The three-color artwork is appropriately old-fashioned, expressive, and as appealing as ever. A satisfying read for anyone who has ever had a special attachment to a toy.

About the Author Louise Fatio was the author of several books, including the Happy Lion books, all illustrated by her artist husband, Roger Duvoisin. She was born in 1904 in Switzerland and died in 1993 in New Jersey. Roger Duvoisin wrote and illustrated forty books, including those about Petunia the silly goose and Veronica the hippopotamus, and illustrated over a hundred more by other authors, many with his wife, Louise. He received the Caldecott Medal in 1947 for White Snow, Bright Snow and a Caldecott Honor in 1966 for Hide and Seek Fog, both written by Alvin Tresselt. Roger Duvoisin died in 1980.

    About the Author

Matt Neuburg started programming computers in 1968, when he was 14 years old, as a member of a literally underground high school club, which met once a week to do timesharing on a bank of PDP-10s by way of primitive teletype machines. He also occasionally used Princeton University's IBM-360/67, but gave it up in frustration when one day he dropped his punch cards. He majored in Greek at Swarthmore College, and received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1981, writing his doctoral dissertation (about Aeschylus) on a mainframe. He proceeded to teach Classical languages, literature, and culture at many well-known institutions of higher learning, most of which now disavow knowledge of his existence, and to publish numerous scholarly articles unlikely to interest anyone. Meanwhile he obtained an Apple IIc and became hopelessly hooked on computers again, migrating to a Macintosh in 1990. He wrote some educational and utility freeware, became an early regular contributor to the online journal TidBITS, and in 1995 left academe to edit MacTech Magazine. He is also the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide. In August 1996 he became a freelancer, which means he has been looking for work ever since. He is the author of Frontier: The Definitive Guide and REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, both for O'Reilly & Associates.

The author has trouble with teaching/explaining/communicating/logic/organizing/writing. With Apple's own excellent documentations, you can spend 100% of your time learning. With the author's books, however, the majority of your effort will be trying to overcome the author's troubles. Instead of making a confusing concept simple, the author makes even the simplest ideas confusing. Sometimes, reading the book is like going through a maze -- you just don't know where you are, and you don't know where you will be going. That may sound like an exaggeration. Wait till you finish the whole book. You won't feel much of what I described in the first part of the book. That is because the topics are straight forward. Any confusion can be overcome by first going through outside sources (like Apple's documentation), and then come back to try to make sense of the author. And if there is anything that troubles you, you will likely blame yourself for being "too beginner" (Don't !). At later parts, however, as the topics get more advanced, the impact of author's troubles multiplies. You will be confused more and more often, and then rely more and more on outside materials... to the point where the book serves only as a list of topics for you to do research on.Having said that, this book does contain valuable information that is not in Apple's documentation. Again, the author's troubles make it difficult to extract that information. Good or bad, this book is the same as the last year's edition, and updated from Swift 1.3 to Swift 2.0. I am maintaining my rating of 3 stars.

Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2 By Jon Klieman Great book and laying the foundational knowledge to Swift 2.0, i0S9 and Xcode 7. With so many paid online tutorials out there, it is really nice to dive into the details and understand the foundation of what certain code elements are and how they are constructed. 95 pages read and about 4 hours of spent so far and I can't wait for the iOS9 programming book to get released. It is really helpful to code the examples in Xcode Playground to see the examples run, especially as a beginner.

I am a novice when it comes to programming. I have spent some time on Lynda.com, Treehouse.com, and read many different books on the subject of Swift Programming. I wanted to try this book because I felt many of the other publishers explained things well, but they always seemed to be just scratching the surface of a given subject matter. This book will not leave you with questions on whether or not the material is sufficiently covered, but it will leave you confused and frustrated with many of the explanations and examples offered.Pros: The book is thorough in its subject matter coverage. It progresses in a logical fashion like many other programming books.Cons: The examples and the explanations are made overly complex for someone who is new to programming. Most of the examples will have to be read over and over many times before you can understand what it is the author is trying to convey to you as a reader. While reading this book , I found my self referencing other books and documents trying to decipher what the author was saying.
