From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Billy is not thrilled to be spending the summer in a cabin on a lake in the middle of nowhere. His mom and dad aren't together, and he's worried this change may be permanent. Their cabin is owned by Dr. Libris, who also owns the mysterious island in the lake. With a lack of technology, and bullies as neighbors, Billy resorts to searching for a key to open the bookcase in Dr. Libris' study. What he unlocks brings classic books to life—when he reads the books, he hears the action somehow occurring on the island. Curious, he ventures out to the island to explore and discovers the unbelievable—somehow the stories he is reading are actually happening. When he meets Hercules, Zeus, Robin Hood, Tom Sawyer, and others, he becomes embroiled in their adventures and unwittingly causes the storylines to collide. When Billy brings his neighbors, Walter, and Walter's sister, out to the island, they all face treacherous foes including the giant from Jack in the Beanstalk and a space lizard from Walter's comic book. Billy is left trying to figure out whether Dr. Libris is behind everything, whether his own mind may be the culprit, and whether or not he can use the island to help save his parents' marriage. While the plot is unique, the story feels too far-fetched to be believable, and lacks the magic of Grabenstein's Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library (Random, 2013).—Michele Shaw, Quail Run Elementary School, San Ramon, CA
Review "A wonderful tale… This book is like no other I've read. It's a complete original." -- James Patterson"In this entertaining literary romp, the author includes references to over 20 classic tales, from Aesop's Fables to Holes. For curious readers, he's listed the titles at the end, but familiarity with these stories is not required to appreciate this fast-paced fantasy. Readers will wish their summers were so eventful." - Kirkus Reviews "Readers will appreciate Billy’s cleverness in solving his ever-growing problems, as these literary characters make plenty of trouble outside the confines of their intended stories. Effortlessly readable and a whole lot of fun." - Booklist Reviews

By Deborah V I originally got this to read with my granddaughters, but after reading the first few chapters I felt it was "too adult" for their ages (9ish). In the first chapter we learn Billy's parents are separated and they argue over money constantly since Billy's dad likes to spend it foolishly. I could see them asking all sorts of questions about separations, divorce, grown ups and their money etc. Maybe next year?So I read it for me! It was a cute story where favorite characters come to life from books. It's quirky, has some laugh out loud moments and of course has Billy as the hero in his efforts to become a family again with his mom and dad. I love to read and have read a lot of the books where the character came to life--and Pollyanna being one of my faves. One of the nice things the author does is list, at the end of the book, all of the books he pulled characters from so that you can go back and read or reread any that catch your fancy.

Grabenstein is so clever By Mira Dugan Having read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library not too long ago, I was very excited to try Grabenstein’s latest, The Island of Dr. Libris. I am so impressed by the depth of the plot goes into the story. The author has thought of all sorts of delightful details and tied them together perfectly. In The Island of Dr. Libris, Billy is staying at a cabin owned by the Doctor who has an extensive collection literature. As Billy checks out the stories, the action of each tale comes to life. Billy gets to see some amazing classic stories in action, but none more interesting than the one that helps him to get started on a treasure hunt.I don’t know what to compare this book to other than the author’s Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s library. They are different from other young adult novels, but completely enjoyable. Fun characters, classic literature, puzzles, and completely captivating. If you liked Grabenstein’s previous novel as my kids and I did, I think you’re sure to like this one too.

Perfect for readers ages 8-11 (depending on reading level) By Super Shopper If you like books and puzzles, then this is a great book for you. It is from the author of "Escape from Lemoncello's Library", and is similar, but does not contain the same characters. This book is about Billy. He goes to a cabin on an island. The stories that he reads come to life; three muskateers, hercules, etc. He finds a bottle that tells him there is treasure on the island, and the story becomes a treasure hunt. Both of my boys (ages 11 and 9 (both very advanced readers), enjoyed the book. It was very easy for them to read, and they both finished it in 3 days. One of them liked Lemoncello more, the other liked this book better. Either way, they like the ease and adventure displayed by this author. One thing they liked better about Lemoncello was that there was a puzzle to solve in the book. Both wish this book had contained something similar. We highly recommend this book.
