Minimum QRP is full of ideas for the radio amateur who wants to get the most from their modest station and antenna. Apply its tested strategies today for more success on the bands, whether you're into portable operating, DX, awards, contests or more. While pitched at the QRPer, those with 100 watts and simple antennas will also find much of interest. It's for a broad audience, including newcomers, the more experienced and those returning to amateur radio. After touring various facets of QRP, Minimum QRP gives some forthright but often forgotten advice on equipment. Is the commercial, kit or homebrew transceiver you're considering sufficient to give spontaneous contacts almost any time you switch on? This book guides you through the choices out there, with an emphasis on affordable and effective. Antennas are next. One size and type does not fit all. The right choice depends on location, style of operating and activity patterns in your area. Some suggestions, based on the author's extensive experience of restricted space and portable QRP, are given here. Some QRPers have suitable equipment and antennas yet don't make as many contacts as they should. Reasons for this can come down to choice of band, understanding local activity and operating technique. Whether you're after DX or a local ragchew, Minimum QRP gives some crafty tips on working the most with the least. Nearly every aspect of amateur radio can be done with five watts. Indeed QRP can sometimes add to its enjoyment due to simple to construct and lightweight equipment. If you get bored with one facet there's always another. You'll find information on such QRP sub-interests, such as weak signal modes, VHF and pedestrian mobile in this book. Still not sure? View some of the author's other material at http://www.vk3ye.com and http://www.youtube.com/vk3ye , With much new content, Minimum QRP consolidates the author's experience in the one reference. With over 200 pages and numerous illustrations it represents excellent value.

By Peter Marks The author shares his considerable practical experience of ham radio in an easy to read and informative book. It covers equipment (including commercial and home brew), antennas, bands, propagation, modes and operating procedures that give the reader valuable tips on how to enjoy success in the challenging art of low power operation. The focus on QRP is, of course, valuable for operators working at all power levels.Peter has always been generous with his contribution to the hobby of amateur radio and this book adds to the information available to newcomers. I look forward to more from VK3YE in the future.

What you need for QRP radio By Bill Adams Mr. Parker brought his considerable enthusiasm, knowledge and conversational ability to the Kindle community and in so doing continued his excellent contributions to amateur radio. I've long been a subscriber to his YouTube channel and web postings where he demonstrates practical applications of ham radio and this practicality transfers well into electronic print. This book is a very good overview of QRP and very well could serve as a standard how to guide for assembling and operating a low power ham station. 73 AF4B

By Charlene Y Fisher My 2 yr old granddaughter LOVES Sheriff Callie coloring books and other items that are hard to find. I was so happy to find this for her and other books so I ordered several. Easy for little hands to open and look at the pages and pictures and fun to read. The pictures hold the interest of little ones who cannot read yet and the characters are cute. I would highly recommend Sheriff Callie series for anyone who loves animals and cute stories. Good for younger kids.

Perfect book for those kids who have a whatever attitude By Heart of a Philanthropist HoaP would like to thank Christy Ziglar for gifting us a copy of Whatever Wanda in exchange for an honest review.Ever have one of those days when you want to do something but the rest of the family already has plans that you think are going to be boring? That is the kind of day Wanda is having! Wanda is NOT excited about going to the Rubber Duck Days Festival. She doesn't want to dress up in duck clothes to match her family, and she doesn't want to participate in dumb duck day traditions. Wanda goes with her family and has a miserable time. Her 'whatever' attitude doesn't seem to get anyone down but herself. Her friends are all having a great time. When it comes time to decide what to do next and Wanda says, "Whatever," she ends up getting the job of cleaning up after the Duck Day Festival! Poor Wanda. . . She starts to realize that if her attitude had been different she might have had some fun.A good samaritan comes by and tells Wanda that sometimes we have to believe something will be great in order to make it great. Wanda is allowed one more job. Even though she didn't earn the opportunity to ride on the Duck Day float, she gets to, and she passes out duck masks to all the bystanders. Whatever Wanda learned that day, she learned she must make her own fun!I love Christy Ziglar's simple writing style. This book is similar to her Can't Wait Willow (see review here). The story is focused on one thing. Wanda doesn't want to have fun so she doesn't. A savior comes along in the book that explains 'fun' to Wanda, and allows her another opportunity to have fun even though she doesn't deserve it. (Thus the savior character). Although there is more than one character in the book (Wanda's mom, her friends, and the savior), the story focuses on Wanda. That makes it easy for little ones to follow the story, and the sing-song story line, "Whatever." will engage children. They can read with you! "Whatever!" This is a perfect book for a child who thinks everything is 'boring.' It will give him/her a new outlook.HoaP received this book in exchange for an honest review. [...]

My two year old Nikolas jumped as soon as he saw all the ducks on the cover. He has a duck obsession since we moved to Missouri. He just loved all the pictures in it. The whole book is about a Duck Race, you can imagine his delight! My favorite part is the star that follows Wanda around and shows when her attitude is good or bad. It's such a fun addition to the story. This is a great teaching story about attitude. With the right attitude you will make your day and life great, and you'll be happy. With the wrong attitude you will be miserable and have a bad day. This story teaches your kids all about how just a slight change in attitude can make you and your day the best it can be. I have 8 kids and a few with rotten attitudes as they enter the teen years. So this book hit a chord with me. Life is all about what you make it, and this book encourages you to make it Great!~I received this for my honest review, all opinions are 100% my own.~

By PennyMindingMom “Whatever.”We’ve all had those “Whatever” days…You know, those days when our attitude gets the better of us. We have already determined that the task at hand isn’t going to be the least bit enjoyable. Is there anything we can do to take the “Whatever’s” away?“Whatever Wanda” written by Christy Ziglar, tells the story of Wanda, a little girl with a bad attitude. The annual Rubber Duck Day festival is the biggest celebration of the year. Everyone is excited to be there, everyone except Wanda. Whenever she is asked to join in the fun she just says, “Whatever”. Will her attitude keep her from having fun along with everyone else? The book is filled with little gems of wisdom and fun. The first being the “Dear Grownups” section. Parents should take a moment to read this. It will give you something to think about as your read through the story with your little one. You will also discover that there is a “Star Search” in the story. As you read through the story you and your little one can search for the star. When Wanda has a bad attitude the star is sad and deflated, and when she has a good attitude the star is bright and cheery. There were a couple of instances where my daughter didn’t pick up on the “sad” star, but she did recognize the problems with Wanda’s attitude. I loved this part of the book, while we were looking for the stars we were able to chat about why the star was sad and what Wanda could do to make the star happy again. The story is fun, even though Wanda’s attitude is poor, the story is still bright and cheery. The message is powerful and shared in a way that young children can understand using situations that children can easily relate to. The illustrations are bright and suited the story perfectly. The duck theme is so cute and adds just a little more fun to the story.“Whatever Wanda” is a great story for parents and children to share together. It shows us how we are in charge of our attitude. Being positive is a choice that we each have to make. As parents we need to teach our children that sometimes our attitudes aren’t appropriate for the situation and this book helps us teach this lesson at time when the attitude is not the problem. It takes the lesson to a time and place where your child will be more open to listening.Be sure to take a moment to visit the Shine Bright Kids website for some great parenting resources, children’s games, worksheets and other activities. We can’t wait to print off the “Make Your Own Book” and create our own story for our bookshelf!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

There is no reason better. But it also deals with deciding how to fight, with love foremost in your mind, compromise and faith for a better end. This book will be acceptable for all readers. Although I don't believe in dragons, fairies or spirits in trees or that the world is a living being, I believe that this is a good storyline. You can disregard all the errors in spelling and grammar.I look forward to reading more stories from this author.

Our society is being crippled with a disease that is pandemic. This malady is manifesting itself as an attitude of irresponsibility. It's always somebody else's fault, not mine. Someone else is to blame, not me. The only way to counter this mindset is for true men to stand up and take responsibility for our choices and our actions. This can only happen if we take ownership of every aspect of our life. The purpose of this book is to incite men to action, especially men of faith, to set aside our cultural and even religious stereotypes of "manhood" and take up the charge and calling of becoming an ultimate man. Do you have the desire to rise up and become a real man, but may not know how? Are you tired of fighting addictions and bad habits that keep you from living up to your fullest potential? Are you ready to become a spiritual Gladiator and a William Wallace for your generation? Then this book is for you.

The Mad Maze Below, by Bradford Ellington

From the Author There is a certain madness in all of us. When I sat down to write this story, I knew only two things: I wanted to give minotaur a better place in the fantasy genre than I felt they were given, and I wanted to explore the dichotomy of brains and brawn in which we must all find balance. Valon Strock is a minotaur who reflects his culture in the world of Thale. His people are largely known as brutes, earthy in a sense that they prefer to use their strengths to solve problems. This usually results in something being strong-armed, in both concrete and abstract examples. While minotaur are renowned for physical prowess, they are also regarded for their ability to philosophize. Minotaur are known for considering a problem longer than any other person has the patience or stomach for, often thinking uninterrupted with sleeping or eating until they solve whatever riddle was set before them. Thus minotaur as a whole, and Valon by extension, dedicate their lives to melding these two great strengths. The philosopher and the warrior.  I suppose I mirrored minotaur culture in the style of my truest source material, the Greeks. Modern incarnations of Valon come to mind as well. Among others, Tarzan was an inspiration for my young bull. Valon at this point in his life's story is a little more sure of the world he lives in. He needs only to fit himself into the parameters that solving the problem set before him demands. In this way, Valon and Tarzan share a key trait. Both characters are tasked with assimilating into a culture they once abandoned, and not just live a life, but thrive in one.If a reader was to take something away from this, I would hope this is part of it: trust the talents you have to solve the problems you come across. I do not want to spoil the story, but suffice it to say that Valon must learn this same lesson if he is to succeed in the Mad Maze Below. Happy reading. -BE

About the Author Starting out by selling self-made comic books to his friends and neighbors at the age of nine, Bradford Ellington found a calling to the worlds inside his head ever since. Although he writes in nearly every format (even a few theoretical ones) he finds his home in fiction and usually fantasy. And even though he only lives there part-time, Bradford takes residence in reality, specifically Phoenix, Arizona, with his lovely wife Ashleigh, who inspires him most of all.

Sometimes fantasy books portray alien races as humans in alien wrappers. In The Mad Maze Below you are sucked into a fantasy world that is the perfect blend of different and familiar. Not so different is to be disturbing but just different enough to be believably real. The only caution I would give to the reader, is be cautious of reading in a public place. I did this in a restaurant and when someone dropped a cup to coincide with climactic event I jumped and let go of the little squeal much to everyone's delight. LOLI hope that the author gives us more opportunities to understand and explore this rich world he's created.

Telekinetic preteens use their powers for good—and evil—in this mind-bending sequel to The Ability, which Publishers Weekly called a “fast-paced, superhero-tinged spy novel.”Everywhere that Christopher Lane turns, he sees the face of the boy he killed. There is no escape from the guilt, not even on his return to Myers Holt—the secret London academy where he and five others are being trained to use their mental powers, their Ability. But now that the threat of Dulcia Genever has been dealt with, his friends are too busy working for the police, entering the minds of some of the country’s most dangerous criminals, to sympathize. Chris’s teachers are already concerned enough about him, especially when Chris starts to wonder if the boy may not be a figment of his imagination after all. Meanwhile, alone in Darkwhisper Manor, Ernest Genever is enjoying watching Chris’s torment. Yes, he will keep his promise—Christopher Lane will die—but not until he has watched Chris lose his mind waiting for Ernest to appear. For, if nothing else, Dulcia Genever did teach her son one valuable lesson: Revenge is a dish best served cold.

From Booklist With winter break over, 12-year-old Christopher Lane and his five classmates have returned to the highly secretive Myers-Holt Academy. Under the tutelage of Sir Bentley, the six continue to hone their Abilities. Chris is haunted by sightings of Ernest, the surviving twin of the boy he killed at last semester’s ball. Two weeks before end of term, thinking his Ability is short-lived, Chris risks his slot at Myers-Holt to find and confront Ernest. As engaging as this second book is, readers who haven’t read The Ability (2013) will be at a disadvantage. However, series fans will eagerly await the third installment, when Chris turns 13. Will his Ability die? Grades 4-8. --J. B. Petty

• CHAPTER ONE •

Wednesday, January 2 Christopher Lane stood on the sidewalk outside his house, his bags at his feet, and waited for the car that would take him back to school. He was half an hour early but was eager to get away, exhausted by the silence and tension in his house. It had been a difficult few days. His mother had not once celebrated Christmas with him in the seven years that had passed since his father’s death, and so, as usual, there had been no gifts exchanged, his efforts for their Christmas meal had gone unmentioned, and he had watched the New Year’s celebrations on the television by himself while his mother slept upstairs. This year, however, he had had even more to contend with—not the least of which was that he had barely slept the entire time, his mind plagued by the memory of the boy he had killed. Chris had always managed to cope on his own, but for the first time in years, he had needed his mother. And she had let him down. So much had changed since his twelfth birthday: His scholarship at Myers Holt Academy, the exclusive government school that he had enrolled at only a few months earlier, had included the payment of bills and renovations to his house. Everything possible had been offered to his mother to help her, and Chris had expected that for his mother, as much as for himself, this marked a new beginning. Instead, she had ignored it all, choosing to remain locked in self-pity. It was a decision that Chris could not begin to understand. He missed his father every day, but if he, at twelve years old, could understand that life had to go on, then surely so should his mother. He had watched her over the last few days, staring blankly at the television, looking up only to bark orders in his direction, and any sympathy that he had previously felt completely disappeared. That morning, he had packed his bags with the clothes that his new school had bought for him and a photograph of his father and left without bothering to wake his mother up. He doubted that, even if she noticed he had left, she would care. Chris resolved to think no more of it until he returned home—which, assuming he was allowed to remain at school on their free weekends, would not be until the Easter holidays in three months’ time. • • • “Oi—you, Twist!” Chris jerked his head round at the sound of the familiar voice. Kevin Blunt, his old nemesis, who had made his life a living nightmare at his old school, was walking quickly toward him, his gang following behind. For a split second, Chris felt himself tense up, before suddenly remembering what he was now capable of. He stood straight and watched the boys approach. “Whatcha doing?” asked Kevin, looking down at the bags by Chris’s feet. “Your mum thrown you out?” Arch, Kevin’s gormless sidekick, and the other boys laughed. “I’m going back to school,” said Chris. “Oh, yeah, didn’t you get into that special school?” asked Kevin. “That’s right,” said Chris. “What is it, a school for poor thieves who can’t take a beating?” “Something like that,” said Chris, refusing to let Kevin rile him. Kevin, on the other hand, grew increasingly agitated by Chris’s calmness. “Hope you’ve learned something, then, ’cause I reckon I owe you a beating,” said Kevin. He walked up to Chris and looked him square in the eyes. “I don’t think you want to do that, Kevin,” said Chris, looking around to make sure the coast was clear. “Oh, yeah, and why’s that?” “Because last time you threatened me with a beating, you ended up sitting in a tray of custard.” Arch and the other boys laughed. Kevin’s face turned red. “What’s so funny?” he asked. The boys all stopped laughing immediately. “Uh, nothing,” they all mumbled, looking down at their shoes. “Good. You got lucky last time, Twist,” said Kevin, turning back to face Chris. “I can do it again, Kevin, so back off,” said Chris, surprised at the confidence he had now that he knew about his Ability, the powers that all twelve-year-olds had for one year only. Lucky for Chris, this was a well-kept secret—one that Kevin, although twelve himself, was completely in the dark about. Kevin frowned but didn’t respond. His eyes went down to the bag at Chris’s feet. Chris could tell Kevin was unnerved by his confidence. “What’s in there?” “Just clothes.” Kevin bent down. “Don’t touch it,” said Chris, but it was too late. Kevin had already unzipped the bag. “What?! Where did you get these from?” asked Kevin, pulling out a pair of designer sneakers that had been bought for him by the teachers at his new school after he had run away from home carrying nothing. “They were a present,” said Chris, grabbing them out of Kevin’s hands. “Yeah, right. Still robbing, then,” said Kevin, pulling out some more clothes from Chris’s bag. Chris looked down at Kevin, and he clenched his jaw in anger. He breathed in deeply, reminding himself that the use of the Ability without the permission of his school was strictly banned. Kevin, taking advantage of Chris’s silence, continued to rummage through the bag. “Get your hands off my stuff!” said Chris. “What’s this?” asked Kevin, pulling out the photograph of Chris’s father in his military uniform. Kevin smiled. If there was one thing he knew, it was that the surest way to rile Chris was to mention his family. “Don’t touch that!” said Chris. “If he was anything like you,” said Kevin, looking at the picture with a smirk, “he probably died trying to run away. The world’s a better place with one less coward from the Lane family.” “He was a hero—not that you’d know anything about what that means,” said Chris, leaning forward to grab the picture. Kevin snatched it away and held it up over his head. For a moment, Chris and Kevin stared at each other, and then, before Chris had a chance to react, Kevin opened his hand and the picture fell to the ground, the glass shattering all around their feet. In that instant, Chris forgot all about the rules of Myers Holt and the consequences of using his Ability out in the open. He looked up at Kevin, and his mind went blank. Arch and the rest of the gang, who had been laughing up until that point, turned silent as they watched Kevin begin to shake. “Uh . . . what’s happening?” asked Kevin, suddenly looking very frightened. “Why am I—” Before Kevin had a chance to finish the sentence, he flew straight up into the air, as if he were a rocket launched full throttle into space. “Help me!” he screamed, but his friends didn’t react—they stayed rooted to the spot in shock as they watched Kevin flying up past the lampposts. “Nobody insults my dad,” said Chris, never taking his eyes off Kevin, who was now a small figure way up past the rooftops. And then, when he’d reached the point where he was barely visible anymore, Kevin stopped rising. For a moment, there was total silence as everybody watched Kevin, too high to be heard, flail about uselessly. Chris furrowed his brow and placed the image of Kevin being thrown about in the air into his mind. As soon as he had done so, Kevin immediately began to move again, this time looping the loop over and over again. “AaaaAAARRGHHaaaaargh . . .” Kevin’s screams increased in volume as he neared the ground, upside down, and faded out again as he was lifted up into the skies once more. Chris was about to throw Kevin into another loop when a booming shout interrupted him. “Christopher!” Chris jerked his head round, and immediately his focus was broken. There, to his horror, he saw the two figures of John and Ron, the security guards from Myers Holt Academy, standing by a long black car with darkened windows. The car doors were still open from where they had jumped out. Chris hesitated and then opened his mouth to try to explain what had happened, but a loud screeching sound interrupted him. “mmmmmUUUUUMMMMYYYY!” Chris looked up and saw Kevin freefalling back to Earth, his voice now loud and clear. John took three enormous strides forward, put his bulging arms out, and caught a whimpering Kevin with a soft thud. John leaned forward, then placed Kevin gently on his feet, his legs still trembling so hard that he fell backward into Arch, who put his arms out to hold him steady. “What did you do?” blubbered Kevin, tears pouring down his face. “What was that?” Chris was about to respond when Ron, wearing his trademark sunglasses and black suit, stepped forward and grabbed Kevin by the scruff of his neck. Although half the size of the gigantic John, Ron nevertheless cut a very intimidating figure when angry. “Now you listen here, and the rest of you too. You saw nothing. You heard nothing. In fact, if anybody asks, you’re going to tell them you had a nice day at the park. Do you understand?” “Yes,” whispered Kevin. “Good. Now tell me, what did you do today?” “We went to the park,” said Kevin, his bottom lip wobbling. “And what did you do there?” “We . . . um . . . played soccer?” “Good,” said Ron. “Now, before you boys run home crying, I think there’s something you need to know. Unfortunately for you all, you are looking at two of the government’s top agents, which basically means we know everything. Isn’t that right, John?” “That’s right, Ron,” said John, his arms folded across his enormous frame. “You can’t so much as sneeze without us finding out about it,” continued Ron, “so, if we hear that one of you has breathed a word of what happened today, there will be consequences, and believe me, with the connections we have, the police won’t be coming to your rescue. Do you understand?” “Yes,” said Kevin, nodding his head vigorously, still sniffling. “Yes, what?” “Yes, sir.” “Good. Now get out of here.” The boys all looked up at Ron—their eyes wide and teary, their bodies shaking with fear. “Scram!” shouted Ron, and without giving Chris another look, Kevin turned and ran off, the other boys following quickly behind him. “Come on, Christopher, let’s get this mess sorted out,” said John, stooping to pick up Chris’s bag. Chris knelt down and started to pick up the clothes and shoes scattered about the pavement. “I’m going to be in so much trouble, aren’t I?” “Only if your teachers find out about it. We’re not planning on telling anybody, are we, Ron?” “I didn’t see anything at all, John, did you?” said Ron, picking up the shards of glass and placing them in a nearby bin. “Not a thing, Ron,” said John, picking up the photograph of Chris’s father. “Bit of an accident here, though, but it’s nothing that Maura won’t be able to sort out. I’m sure she has a spare frame you could put this into.” “Thank you,” said Chris. “I didn’t think . . . It’s just that . . .” “You don’t have to explain anything, son. We saw what that boy did as we drove up. I’d have done exactly the same if I’d been in your position.” Chris smiled, grateful to be back around people who genuinely cared for him. He put the last of his clothes back in the bag and zipped it up. “Right, then, let’s forget all of this and get you to school. Your friends are waiting for you.”

The story will capture their imagination in a way that they can easily relate to. It's not easy finding suitable books for my son, who's 11. They are either too babyish or I veto them as being too adult. Mindscape, and The Ability get it just right. Hope there's another one coming!
