In the wake of economic crisis and widespread unemployment, Podemos has quickly become one of the most dynamic political forces in Europe, offering a radical democratic alternative to austerity and the status quo. Barcelona-based activist Carlos Delclós was there to witness this rise first-hand, and in Hope is a Promise offers a timely narrative of the party’s origins within the wider indignados anti-austerity movement, as well as this movement’s successes in building popular support from below. In the process, these activists have redefined the concept of representative democracy, and shown that it is possible for radical movements to translate popular discontent around austerity into electoral success. Featuring unique testimony by many of those involved in the party, this insightful and often inspiring account considers what the rise of Podemos means for the future of Europe, as well as for similar movements around the world.

While reading the book, I could not stop thinking about its parallels with another great book written nearly 50 years ago--The Strawberry Statement.

The proliferation of nuclear weapons has been defined as the gravest potential threat to international peace and security. The concept of nuclear deterrence has to be revisited in this regard. The longer the Nuclear Weapon States hold on to their nuclear weapons, the bigger the chance that nuclear weapons will be spread and will be used (once again) by accident, in an authorized or unauthorized way, or that nuclear terrorism becomes reality. The marginalizing of nuclear weapons resulting in a Nuclear Weapon Free World should be considered as a viable alternative.

A valuable literature on nuclear weapon free world By seok mo An Author, Tom Sauer, a research fellow at Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs in John F. Kennedy School of Government Harvard University, discussed the concepts and conditions of nuclear deterrence; an appropriate response to the further spread of nuclear weapons; and the pros and cons of the nuclear weapons free world. Sauer's book is valuable addition to the literature on nuclear arms control or disarmament negotiations after the end of the Cold War. The author examined and criticized several nuclear arms control regimes or antinuclear movements, such as the NPT and its Review and Extension Conference of 1995; the IAEA, the CTBT, Export-Control regimes; positive and negative security guarantees; and Nuclear Weapon Free Zones (NWFZ). Sauer's interest lies primarily with the benefits of Nuclear Weapon Free World (NWFW). Attempting to emphasize the importance of the NWFW, this study tries to make clear why nuclear weapon free world is necessary, and the writer strongly believes that NWFW is ultimately the only viable security regime with regard to future nuclear arms control and disarmament. Sauer's appealing study is likely to be the precious source for the post cold war nuclear policies for the world.

From School Library Journal Toddler—Little Elephant has a one track mind. He's obsessed with trains and wants to play with nothing else. His parents arrange for a ride on a real train as a special treat, and he has the opportunity to interact with other youngsters. He meets a cat, a penguin, and a bunny, each of whom advocates for a different toy vehicle. Little Elephant wants none of it until the toddlers and the toys get mixed up as the train races through a tunnel. The resulting spread includes the repeated chant "Train-plane-digger-digger! Train-plane-car!" Little Elephant learns new words on the outing, including "Friends!" This is a colorful, fun selection for those who love their machines. Whoo! Whoo!

By lucendienne This story is really nice for children just starting to read because it doesn’t use a lot of long and complicated sentences, but rather a lot of single words. At first I had worried that this would be confusing to my little one, but he actually got drawn into it deeply, identifying with the children in the story, most especially when the tantrum is thrown. It is short, sweet, teaches about trying new things, playing with friends and compromise in a way young children can understand. I recommend it to parents of children 1-5 years in age.

This delightful debut picture book celebrates both the joy of venturing into the unknown and the value of staying connected to loved ones back home. It stars a little ball of yarn who can’t resist the tug of adventure, the twists and turns of discovery, or the comfort of family and friends. Edmund is a ball of yarn and a ball of energy! From the time he could roll, he’s been bouncing down his front steps to explore, and his parents have always been right there to reel him in and roll him back up. But now that he’s bigger, Edmund is ready to discover the wonders of the world. Everything is new and exciting—but sometimes, even a little ball of yarn gets lonely, and there’s nothing better than the comfort of being around those he cares about.

Edmund Unravels, by Andrew Kolb

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—A small blue ball of yarn seeks a life of adventure. When Edmund was young, his parents would reel him in after his journeys. When he gets bigger, the "tug of discovery" is too much to resist and Edmund travels far afield. If he feels melancholy, Edmund follows the familiar, welcoming pull leading him back home. Kolb's stylized, digitally created cartoons are animated with bright colors and lots of action. The bundle of wool is pictured sailing through the air on the back of a kite, chatting with a pin cushion, and being chased by playful kittens. VERDICT Tightly woven with wordplay, this is a whimsical story of family ties.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Review “Sunny illustrations. . . . [Edmund’s] trailing tail, goofy smile, twirly ‘bangs,’ baseball cap and jaunty backpack will allow young readers to identify with him. . . . They will smile with recognition when he meets ‘interesting people’ in the shapes of bottles, toilet paper rolls, buttons and even a friendly pincushion. They will undoubtedly cheer when Edmund exhausts the possibilities of travel and rolls himself home to family and friends. . . . This long extended metaphor filled with laugh-worthy wordplay will comfort children and parents alike.”

— Kirkus Reviews

“Animated with bright colors and lots of action. . . . Tightly woven with wordplay, this is a whimsical story of family ties.”—School Library Journal   “Kolb has a bright, clean drawing style that will remind readers of their favorite contemporary animation, and his panoramas make it fun to follow Edmund’s travels and the trail of yarn he leaves in his wake. . . . Impressive for its visual playfulness and its astute take on child development.”—Publishers Weekly

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful debut about belonging, family and closeness – the things that are worth the most in our lives By Helpful Advice ‘Edmund Unravels’, written and illustrated by Andrew Kolb, is a warm and emotional debut that tells a story about the importance of belonging, of what the home is and the people who live there are, the family ties and need that after all the discoveries we return close to those that love us and we love them. The main character Edmund is a ball of yarn that yearns all the time for adventure since the time when he was able to roll from the first time. And when he was smaller, Edmund’s parents were always close to roll him back, but now he is grown up and ready to explore the vast world before him.As Edmund decide to go far and away he will become smaller and smaller with each place he visited, and suddenly will start to realize that he begins missing something – his beloved ones and his home because no matter how exciting our adventures are, eventually we want closeness and love of beloved persons…Andrew Kolb, a new author on the children book scene, managed to create with his debut a wonderful story understandable in any language, anywhere in the world, that through the charming yarn ball tells about finding ourselves by exploring the world, in the end never forgetting where we actually belong.Given the book lesson may be a bit difficult for the youngest to understand, this makes the book a primarily recommended for children between 5 and 8 years of age; still, thanks to the excellent illustrations even younger readers will endlessly enjoy the adventures of this unusual hero, a kind we have not met as the main character so far. Therefore, this picture book shows that for a skilled author has no restrictions on the creativity, even if the setting and the characters are unusual – therefore, taking into account the level of quality of his debut I cannot wait the next work by this author.Given the inspiring theme, the unique main character and beautiful illustrations, Andrew Kolb’s ‘Edmund Unravels’ picture book is certainly worth money and time spent reading it with your children – a very special book that can be recommended for preschool and younger school children as a work that in charming way speaks about belonging, family and closeness – the things that are worth the most in our lives.

By chemistrymonkey21 I didn't buy this here on Amazon, but saw that it only has 2 reviews at the time. Edmund is an adorable little ball of yarn that loves to go on adventures and can't be kept at home, but he gets homesick sometimes and needs to be reminded that his family is always there waiting for him. I bought this book and sent it to my brother who is serving in the Army over in South Korea. We haven't seen him in over 2 years and when I saw this book I knew I had to send it to him.The illustrations are fantastic and the story is short, but to the point. If you have someone that loves adventures as much as Edmund, this is a cute, fun way to tell them you'll always be there when they decide to come home.

In this eighth title in the wildly popular series, the Five Little Monkeys are supposed to go to bed, but they would rather keep reading their books!

Mama raises an eyebrow. “What was it I said? Lights out! Sweet dreams! No more reading in bed!”

After their mama reads to them, it’s bedtime for the Five Little Monkeys. But they can’t resist reading just one more book . . . or three! Soon Mama is so tired of trying to get her monkeys to quiet down and go to sleep, she picks up their books and takes them with her. At last, the monkeys are ready to settle down . . . until they hear strange sounds from down the hall. Could it be that Mama likes to read in bed, too? This playful addition to the Five Little Monkeys series returns to the familiar setting of Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and features a lively rhymed verse and catchy refrain that are sure to keep young readers chanting along. With a focus on reading for fun and the idea of books as part of a bedtime routine, Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed packs in plenty of mischievous monkey business, and there’s even a comical surprise twist at the end.

Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed (A Five Little Monkeys Story), by Eileen Christelow

Review

"Reading promotion at its best, with a little bit of bad behavior to spice things up." —Kirkus

"They [children] will continue to be delighted, as this time the monkeys turn the tables on their mother at the conclusion of the tale."—School Library Journal

"The interactive text is fun for reading aloud, and the digital line-and-wash illustrations perfectly capture the little monkeys’ zany glee."—Booklist

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. There are two very different books By MaryAnn There are two very different books being sold and reviewed, but they both start out on the same product page. The title of both is "Five Little Monkeys Reading in Bed" and they are both by Eileen Christelow. However, one of them is a hardback with 40+ pages and the other is a paper back with eight pages. The former is the actual book; the latter is a promo put out by Scholastic Books. The problem is that Amazon does not seem to realize there are two different books. On the original product description page, they have the book as having three different formats: hard cover, soft cover and kindle. The description on the original page is correct. However, if you click on the used/paper back format link, it takes you to the eight-page book. Unless, when you are on that page, you click on the link that says "return to product description", and then scroll down and read the description, you will not know that you have started looking at the promo, 8-page book. It is extremely misleading. I ended up ordering the eight page book by mistake, then had to order the hard back. It appears that the original book has not yet been produced as a paper back. The way you can tell the difference between the two versions, is to look for the little red label, centered at the bottom of the cover page. If it says "Scholastic Books," that is the eight page version. I would not recommend getting it....but the hard back book is very cute.

The monkeys read a funny book then a scary one and then boom it was over...i did not think that it would be this short of a book...my daughter does not like it because its kind of pointless to read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is a super funny story! By B Dont buy the paperback version, only buy the hardback version to insure you get the right version, but it super fun, flows great and my kids will have me read it to them over and over...better then Llama Llama series and Pout Pout Fish...its my fav.
