I work with it daily. Like most Microsoft Office prodcucts, Excel has amazing depth of functionality. Most of this value is hidden from most of us. This isn't intentional obfuscation; it's the result of a lot of people working to make the product better for many years. A book like this is necessary to begin to plumb these depths. It's true that the book starts at the beginning and uses a very clear, assume-the-reader-knows-nothing attitude. I skipped the basics and went straight for the pivot charts and data manipulation including macros. I appreciated the down-to-earth style in those rarefied areas. I needed step-by-step examples to understand what to do.My point is that any book about software is going to embrace a style that might not appeal to everyone. Step By Step is a manual. It isn't a novel. You don't really need to start at chapter one and read to the end. It's very easy to find the stuff you need to learn. Once you find it, the book does its job and teaches you. That's great! If you are a rank beginner at Excel, this book is useful for you but is probably overkill. There are less expensive guides to the basics. But if you, like me, are a regular user, then this book will help fill in the knowledge gaps and make strong users into power users. It's easy to read and accurate. As far as the downloadable examples go, I never bothered with them. I got what I needed from the book, which now permanently sits next to my work computer.

Breaks down the information in a useful way for a newbie and someone returning to Excel after many years away By Dogs & Horses I haven't used Excel on a regular basis in close to 8 years, but starting in January that will be changing and...of course, the "new" Excel 2016 is chock full of stuff that my prehistoric version couldn't do and I never needed. I've decided to just re-educate myself in Office and Excel now as if I were starting from scratch. (Maybe I am) This book is exactly what I wanted for this project. It breaks down the program from the basics of saving a worksheet to adding images to explaining how the formulas are read and deciphered by the program - which explains why they have to be entered in a specific way. This may be basic information for lots of folks, but it's not second nature to me, so that section of the book was a welcome discovery. I really appreciate the section on how to customize your quick access bar with the commands you use most. The downloadable practice files/exercises are a bonus value to the book that I will be using again and again. I'm off to a decent start at getting my Excel act back together and current.

I feel the learning curve is not to steep and most people will be happy with it. This book is for beginners and not for advanced users. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer seems to publish the Inside Out series for Excel 2016 or any advanced books on Excel. For the beginner this book is highly recommended. For the advanced user looks like third party books are the only available.

Is it Passover Yet?, by Chris Barash

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—A simple story about preparations for Passover. Rhymed couplets hint at the holiday, followed by the repeated phrase "Passover is on its way" and finally "Passover is here!" The story ends when the seder begins, and no explanations of the customs are offered. The digital illustrations are cheerful with soft colors and gentle rounded forms; many elements of Judaica appear throughout, from a tzedakah box on a shelf to a "Shalom" doormat. The family depicted is Jewish but not traditional in dress, with men and boys donning kippot only for the seder. While the overall effect is pleasantly anticipatory and the illustrations are charming, there are several ways in which the story trips up. The art repeatedly fails to match the text: the page describing "a bucket and mop or a long handled broom" shows a broom and a vacuum cleaner, with a mop appearing two pages later. The words "When the sun's getting low and the doorbell stops ringing" are accompanied by images of people approaching the door on a bright day, not yet having rung the bell. This couplet ends with "And everyone's ready for stories and singing" but the family is not ready for these activities, as they are greeting relatives who have not even removed their coats. Worst of all, the book closes with the lines "When the Seder is ready and candles are lit/And Nana's shown everyone just where to sit…/Passover is here!" This text is accompanied by images showing lighted candles at an empty table and a mom bringing in the seder plate. This is incorrect Passover procedure. Those following a hagaddah know that the seder plate should already be on the table and all should be seated before the candles are lighted as the opening act of the seder. VERDICT Despite the book's charms, the inconsistencies in illustration make it hard to recommend.—Heidi Estrin, Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL

Review "While many other books explain the significance, symbolism, and biblical associations of the seder, this pleasing picture book simply reflects the experiences of young children as their families prepare for Passover." Booklist Online, February 19, 2015"A joyful and inviting prelude to the weeklong celebration and observance." Kirkus Reviews, February 1, 2015"A gentle, thoughtful tribute to the joys of being observant in both a secular and religious sense." Publishers Weekly, January 9, 2015

This is her first book.Alessandra Psacharopulo lives and works in Milan. She studied fine arts and illustration at Mimaster, where she learned painting and using color.

Would be a good choice for a classroom due to the emphasis on the season. It didn't cover the holiday traditions in depth, just mentioned them. If you celebrate Passover, you probably don't need or already have a book that focuses on the what and why anyway. In a multicultural classroom, you'd need to know something about the holiday, but could pick and choose how in depth you wanted to cover any given ritual. I liked the text, and thought the pictures were lovely.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I Thoroughly Enjoyed the Book! By jsp2100 The Mystery of Livvie is an engaging and entertaining story of an average family confronted with an entity whose nature and intentions are unknown. The primary focus of the story involves efforts by family members to communicate and understand more about the entity that has literally attached itself to them. The Mystery of Livvie has a sci-fi/paranormal feel that will be appreciated by fans of that genre. The book takes a unique approach to the “unknown entity” storyline that is refreshing. A highlight of the book is the methods the family develops to communicate with the entity, which prove to be a welcome change from the standard approaches typically used in these types of stories. The characters are also realistic and clearly defined.Overall, it is a very easy read, has a good pace throughout, and builds toward a satisfying ending. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in science fiction or the paranormal.

Zet and the Egyptian Temple Mystery (A Zet Mystery Case) (Volume 3), by Scott Peters

About the Author Scott Peters is the author of the middle grade mystery and adventure series about two young sibling detectives that's set in ancient Egypt. If you are looking for fiction books like Percy Jackson, with myths and legends, or mystery books with adventure and suspense like the Hardy Boys and Theodore Boone, you will enjoy reading this series. The twists and turns and likable characters are similar to books like The Boxcar Children, The 39 Clues, and Nancy Drew. And like the ancient Egypt themed Kane Chronicles, the books have an exciting, richly detailed ancient world with a pantheon of mythical gods and goddesses that readers can escape to. Scott's non-fiction Ancient Egypt Mummy book contains the largest collection of mummy facts in one trivia reference book.  His books are recommended for middle grade readers and up. They're popular with homeschool parents, in kids book clubs, with teachers, schools and librarians. Scott has always had a fascination for all things ancient Egyptian. In addition to writing, Peters has created over 300 museum, science center and theme park installations for such places as the Smithsonian, the Washington Children's Museum, Walt Disney World and Paramount Pictures. Peters helped design an interactive TV show for the Nickelodeon Channel. The author's favorite thing is writing exciting page-turners that take readers back in time to ancient Egypt.

With no one to rely on except himself, he must use all his wits and quick thinking to solve the mystery and return the Princess. If you like Egypt, strong characters, intriguing plots and witty dialogue, you’ll love this series, whether you’re a child or an adult. I’m glad the author brought Hui back.I’ve always been into ancient Egypt. The settings in this book are brimming with life and detail. I feel like I can touch, taste and smell that I’m there!Pharaoh’s family, temple construction, royal jewels, gnarly bad guys and a mystery. What’s not to love? I hope Scott Peters writes a lot more of these, I’m hooked!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. likeable characters and a great plot. The solid life lessons did not detract ... By Krista Gimeno This was an exciting and enjoyable coming-of-age mystery with realistic, likeable characters and a great plot. The solid life lessons did not detract from the adventure narrative at all; in fact, they made it better. First: plans never survive the first engagement with the enemy. The kids tried to plan responsibly, and did a good job with the information and personal power they had, but in the end, they had to be quick thinkers and fast movers to bring their efforts to success.Second: you sometimes find that the people you like the most are not what they seem. They may have aims indifferent to--or worse, completely at odds with--your own. That's a hard lesson on trust for young people. And third, life or death responsibility for another is sometimes more terrifying than danger to oneself. Zet carried the responsibility for Hui's fate, as well as--in the end--a decision that could end in the horrors of war in his home town. The physiology and feelings of weight and dread associated with this responsibility was clearly and honestly done, and I completely believed in them. How many 12-year-olds are there still in the world who must contend with life and death decisions like these?Aside from the realistic solidity and weight of young adult responsibility, the story provided a fascinating look at daily life in ancient Egypt. I wish they'd had stories like this available for kids when I was young.I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, so I could give an honest review.

He enjoyed it as much if not more than the Stink books and previous Judy Moody and Stink adventures together. The plot follows the exploits of the sibling pair and their grandmother as they are all stuck in the house during a blackout. Kids will likely cheer along with Judy and Stink when school is cancelled and appreciate their attempts to scare their grandmother.

McEvoy There are now over 35 books between the different series that include Judy Moody and Stink Moody. And while some of the books that focus more on one or the other of them the best books are the four when they are featured together. In part because they come fully illustrated by Peter H Reynolds in full color, and in part because Jody and Stink are always better together. The first two cross over book The Holly Joliday focused on the holiday of Christmas, the second cross over book focused on family vacation and The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Mad Treasure Hunt. This one focuses around an extended blackout during a hurricane. And as usual when they Moody's are working together rather than fighting some great things happen. The chapters in this book are:Crash LandingElmerBig Bad BlackoutGhost ToastiesHurricane AnnabelleAnnie Oakley and the FiremanMr. Drybones and the ViperThe Ghost of WeejieUp Periscope! The Ghost-Toastie OathAs mentioned a hurricane hits and the Moody's are at home, and it is so bad that Gradma Lou has been evacuated and she comes to wait out the storm with them. But of course being a Moody adventure it is not that simple, Granma Lou had to being the neighbour's pets that they could not take to a shelter. So We now have mom, Dad, Granma, Judy, Stink, a cat named Mouse and a Pug named Pugsy, Milo a ferret and Candy Cane a snake. The Moody household is packed full and then the power goes out. No TV, little radio, but they have a fireplace, games and the family together. A great stay at home adventure takes place.I really enjoy all the Moody books, but these joint books are always just a little more fun. It is a great book in a fun series that is linked to so many other good reads. So if you have not yet met the Moody's give it a try and if you have I am sure you will love it.

By Young Mensan BookParade Judy Moody & Stink: The Big Bad Blackout is a thrilling and humorous story about a family in the midst of a giant storm which causes a blackout. This book contains ten chapters with three of them being surprising, amusing stories told by the characters: Dad, Mom, Judy, Stink, and Grandma Lou.I liked this book because of the funny characters. The author’s writing style made the blackout extra exciting! One chapter, called “The Ghost of Weejie,” is a silly part of the book in which Judy and Stink play a board game. The two characters think there is a ghost in the fortune teller game they are playing, because it predicts that they will have no school the next day. Eerily, at that moment, Mom walks into the room and says, “Guess what, kids? No school tomorrow either. I just got a robo-call on my cell phone from the superintendent’s office.”My favorite part was the chapter called, “Mr. Drybones and the Viper.” In it are two hilarious stories that I think other readers will also enjoy. As an added bonus to this dilemma in the dark, there are some surprises and jump scares throughout the book. A few of them really caught me off guard! This book receives a 5-star rating, since it is such a fun read! I especially enjoyed the “glow in the dark” front cover of the book, which really went well with the blackout scenario. I recommend this book to boys and girls ages 6-10 years old. It is a quick, easy chapter book that is manageable, even for the younger ages. So, if you’re in a blackout, grab a flashlight and read, Judy Moody and Stink: The Big Bad Blackout! This book truly is glowing!Reviewed by Brooke Z, age 8, Delaware Valley Mensa

A remarkable task considering her mother is a bitter, man hating shark that would rather fight and blame everything on those around her. Quinn plans a trip to the Lands of the Gods in Greece with her boyfriend and plans to pop the question. Unfortunately after finding Igor in a very compromising position with a waitress with an overly inflated rack of boobies she takes the trip with her good friend Ingrid. Unbeknownst to Quinn, Ingrid works at OOOPS and this will be very handy very soon. In a perfectly written story line involving a mysterious goat wrangler who tells of a Golden Apple owned by Aphrodite. Quinn wanders the Parthenon and when a small apple falls out of a pillar following a small quake things become most interesting and quite complicated. She meets Kristhos, the guardian of the apple but is unsure of his intentions so she fights for control. In doing so she nicks the apple and dreadful juice flows down her throat. The next thing you know she has big big boobies like cantaloupes, her eyes sparkle purple and her skin has an ethereal glow about it. The group congregates at Quinn's home to figure this out and to teach her how to be a modern day Aphrodite and to work with Cupid. All while watching the soul connection that is happening to Quinn now that she has sworn off men!Just knowing the premise and the way Dakota writes I knew this book would not let me down. I laughed so hard I sent my poodle and my husband running out of the room. These books are addicting!!! Once I pick one up I will read straight thru. Forget eating, sleeping, potty breaks or civil conversation. You always root for the newly made supernatural person and wish the OOOPS gang could come to my own rescue from time to time. I love the girls and their fierce loyalty and protection. I would love to be Nina when I grow up. At 47 I probably should be grown up. Oh well.I love mythology and the different gods we met during the book. There may be a few liberties to make the story flow correctly but the gods and goddesses are true to their roles and abilities. If you haven't read these books you must stop what you are doing and begin. If you truly want to be part of the Tiara Club that adores and are anything like me who occasionally pulls a fan girl moment on Dakota check out her FB page or her author pages. She is totally worth getting to know!!!

When Dakota's OOPS crew is together, crazy stuff happens. The 'crazy stuff' factor increases when there's a new addition to the family. I love this series. Each one has been a great story with memorable characters who make me laugh. It's one of the reasons I read - it's an escape from reality. This group? Sometimes I think they've all escaped the loony bin - but I love them. This one carries the Dakota Accidental and OOPS torch - I loved the characters, the plot moved superbly, and I can't wait for the next one.Do it. Buy this one! You'll thank yourself. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a Depends handy, just sayin'

I read the first two Accidental books from the library, but for some reason they didn't own book three. So, being a crazy person when it comes to series, I stopped after two. However, I did read Interview with an Accidental and I didn't have any trouble picking up eight books later with Aphrodite.Quinn is a really relatable heroine. She's a mythology buff who works in a bookstore and takes night classes in art history. She's taking her dream vacation to Greece when she accidentally bites into a mythical golden apple and inherits the powers of Aphrodite. In Cassidy's pantheon, the goddess of love is primarily a matchmaker. She finds a couple and summons Cupid to shoot them with an arrow and cement their bond. So it's not the most natural job for someone who's just been through a bad break up.Khristos is the son of the former Aphrodite and the guardian of the apple. His lapse led to Quinn finding the apple and all the shenanigans that ensue. He claims it's his duty as guardian to move in with Quinn and teach her to use her new powers. And that the gods could inflict punishments of mythological proportions if they don't do a good job. Despite that creepy-stalker-sounding introduction, I basically liked Khristos. He just didn't feel particularly ancient or Greek to me.The book also started out slow for me. There's really not much external conflict, just Quinn working through her issues with relationships and her overbearing, man-hating mother. But I did like all the sweet, romantic moments where Quinn makes a match. And I thought the end was really exciting, with lots of mythological figures and a twist that I didn't see coming. Cassidy also had some interesting ideas about how the gods and goddesses have adapted to modern times.I really love the little family that Nina, Marty and Wanda have built over the course of the series. They've welcomed vampires, werewolves, demons and now a goddess into the group. Carl the vegetarian zombie is quite possibly the cutest thing ever! I did miss seeing their actual families though. Updates on the previous couples are usually one of my favorite things in a PNR series. Husbands and children were mentioned, but none of them made an appearance. I think I'm going to have to go back and read some of those earlier books to get more of this whole hilarious gang.Originally published at Goldilox and the Three Weres and based on a copy provided by the author.
