From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—Kelsey Case wants to be a detective. She has a spy backpack full of supplies and she's read Harriet the Spy. Now all she needs is a case. When Kelsey, Becca Morales, and Leo Polansky discover newborn kittens stuffed into a trash can, she knows she's found her mystery and maybe even a new best friend. The trio quickly hide the kittens in an old shed and form the Curious Cat Spy Club to find out who dumped the kittens and why. With red herrings, lots of twists and turns, and adventure, this caper is sure to keep kids entertained. VERDICT A fun mystery series that's a sure bet for animal lovers, recommended to fans of Jane O'Connor's "Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth" series (HarperCollins) who are ready for something a bit longer and ever-so-slightly darker.—Terry Ann Lawler, Burton Barr Library, Phoenix, AZ

Review "A fun mystery series that's a sure bet for animal lovers." School Library Journal, March 1, 2015"This first book in a new series is definitely for the animal-lover, and the Scooby-Doo vibe makes it a perfect fit for the budding mystery fan. Young readers will enjoy following the clues along with Kelsey as she learns about friendship and animals." Booklist Online, January 30, 2015"This enjoyable mystery has a satisfying ending and a neatly calibrated level of suspense for middle school readers." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2015"There's plenty of action in this series opener, but Singleton also handles the emotional layers well. Pet lovers will enjoy the animal-centric focus, and the mystery will keep them guessing." Publishers Weekly, January 5, 2015

About the Author Linda Joy Singleton is the author of thirty-five books for children and young adults including YALSA-honored The Seer series and the Dead Girl Walking trilogy. She lives in California.

What is a Zorse?...and More By Amazon Customer I have read every book that this author wrote and have been eagerly awaiting this first book in a new series. I am not disappointed! I love the elements of the book- a zorse, which I've never heard of, a mystery, and the melding of three very different kids into a club with a purpose. The characters are well-defined and capture the reader with their individuality.Three unlikely middle school kids come together and become friends over their common desire to save some kittens found in a dumpster. Becca Morales is the popular girl in school who hangs out with the "in" girls called the Sparklers. Kelsey Case is a basically a shy girl with a desire to solve mysteries. Even more than that, though, she wants friends. And finally, Leo Polansky is a geeky kid who spends all of his time inventing things. Together they form the Curious Cat Spy Club. Who threw three tiny kittens into a dumpster? Why are pets all around town disappearing only to be returned when a reward is offered? The kids investigate this while working out their personality differences. My granddaughter is going to love this book! What kid wouldn't with the elements of animal rescue, mystery, and friendship? I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book. I want to find out more about the zorse!

For Nancy Drew fans By Janet Hamilton Summary: When Kelsey helps stop a runaway zorse (which, as you know, is a cross between a horse and a zebra), she gets more than she bargained for. The zorse belongs to Becca, one of the most popular girls in school. Ducking into an alley to avoid a boy from school, the two girls discover a bag of kittens in a dumpster. A third member, Leo, gets involved in the rescue, and the unlikely trio decide to form a club to protect the kittens until they can find them homes. Kelsey has always dreamed of being a detective, and now she has a real mystery on her hands…who put the kittens in the dumpster? As the Curious Cat Spy Club works to solve it, they uncover a whole pet-napping ring right in their neighborhood. Recommended for grades 4-6.Pros: This well-paced mystery will keep readers guessing right up to the end. In Nancy Drew-like fashion, the last few chapters involve an exciting run-in with the villain and more than one narrow escape. There are interesting subplots that give the characters more depth, such as Kelsey’s and Leo’s family issues and Becca’s thwarted romance.Cons: Kelsey didn’t get to keep her kitten. But the cover says this is an exciting new mystery series, so there may yet be hope.

By Dad of Divas I had never read any of Linda Joy Singleton's works in the past but after reading this I can see why so many people online so many positive things. This was very well written, with great characters and a plot that engages and intrigues you. With a bit of fantasy with reality you have fun with the story as you are reading it, and I found that I did not want to put the book down.I read this with my oldest daughter who is ten and she absolutely loved it. As a parent, I love finding stories that have characters that my daughters can relate to that are written in an age-appropriate way and the author definitely delivered in that regard. I would say that though I read this with my 10 year old, I would bet that my six year old would also love this too, especially with all of the animals that are in the book itself.All-in-all this was a great book for the whole family with strong female characters and a writing style that will keep you from beginning to end!*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

By Valerie Davis I bought "Peter" for my 3 year old great nephew who loves to try and read and be read to. He ADORES the characters and loves pointing out the each beautifully drawn character and the bright, fun colors. The length of the story is perfect for the tiny attention spans of little ones and the size is great for tucking away for trips. What a brilliant idea for children! I was a little wary of my own closet as a child and wished I'd had something like this (Lol)! We'll be getting to coloring book next!!

My 8 year old daughter had been reading the Hound Hotel books on a program that she uses at school and with Christmas around the corner that was one of her gift requests. One of the two that I purchased was this and it was a hit. I thought that it was very age appropriate. It's easy to read and understand. She spent the day reading this book to myself and her father. It was enjoyable! She is quite fond of the Hound Hotel book series and has requested the last two to complete her collection. I definitely would recommend this book. I purchased this book at full retail price and this review is based solely on my and my daughter's experience with the book.

“Damaged people, ultraviolence, murder and explicit sex—what’s not to love about her work?”—“Bad Barbie” Featurette, FANGORIA (America’s #1 Horror Magazine)

Enter into the mind of Barbie Wilde, whose disturbing interior world teems with the voices of rebellious female demons, devilish witches, semen-hungry neo-vampires, raging gods and home invaders, the fiends of sleep paralysis, pint-sized store-front preachers with a whiff of sulfur, body horrors of the most grotesque kind, clandestine aliens and Zulu zombies.

These truly are the VOICES OF THE DAMNED: eleven short horror stories from Barbie Wilde, actress (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, DEATH WISH 3) and dark crime-horror novelist (THE VENUS COMPLEX). FANGORIA has called Wilde “one of the finest purveyors of erotically charged horror fiction around.”

Each story is accompanied by seductive, haunting, full color artworks and illustrations created by some of the most imaginative artists in the genre: Clive Barker, Nick Percival, Steve McGinnis, Daniele Serra, Eric Gross, Tara Bush, Vincent Sammy, & Ben Baldwin.

Foreword by Chris Alexander, Editor in Chief, FANGORIA

Afterword by the Soska Sisters

Review

Publishers Weekly Starred Review:

“In this impressive collection of short stories, actor Wilde (who played the Female Cenobite in the film classic Hellbound: Hellraiser II) reveals a world of beautiful fear. The most delightfully terrifying entries form the Cilicium Trilogy, which reveals the complex origin and destiny of Sister Cilice. This character-focused exploration is sensual in its brutality. In “Writer”s Block,“ Wilde combines the psychological torture of an unknown artist with the erotic egotism of fandom to create a fascinating sexual horror. She creates a dreadful family legacy in “Botophobia,“ in which there are not merely skeletons in the closet but unworldly powers hidden in the basement. Wilde”s mastery of shocking violence is given full rein in subjects ranging from reclusive self-imprisonment to the exploration of European nightmares. As much a chilling collection of frightful fiction as a delight for the darker senses, this is a satisfying triumph in a befitting, unforgiving, style. (Oct.)“

Review Extracts:

“Voices of the Damned is raw, twisted, horrifying and seductive. Barbie Wilde takes no prisoners & she does not disappoint!“978-1-909640-40-5 ―Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Dead of Night and Ghostwalkers

“...this collection of eleven short stories confirms Wilde as a foremost author of erotic horror fiction“

―Jon Towlson, Starburst magazine and author of Subversive Horror Cinema: Countercultural Messages of Films from Frankenstein to the Present

“...her work is so uncanny and fearless, it is a must have for any horror aficionado.“

―writers and directors the Soska Sisters (Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary, See No Evil 2, Vendetta)

“Raised from the dead, this phantasmagoria of tales offers well-written mini-nightmares that will traumatize, titillate, and stick in your mind long after you’ve closed the book.“

―Filmmaker Izzy Lee, Fangoria Online

“If testosterone jumping erotica combined with heart racing fear is your bag of horror then this is just what you’re looking for…“

―Paul Nelson, Scream Horror Magazine UK < br /> “Voices of the Damned is one of those seminal collections put out by an independent publisher that not only heralds the arrival of an awe inspiring new fiction writing talent but also bodes well for the genre into which this particular author has so nobly shoe-horned herself. Just as with Clive Barker, there is no apology for the horrors about which she writes, indeed, the whole tome is a celebration of the weird, fantastic, and, oh yes, the nauseous.“

By Bob James I remember reading Barbie Wilde's incredible, noir crime novel "The Venus Complex" just a few tears back, and being completely blown away. My only prior exposure to the writer Barbie Wilde's work had been "Sister Cilice" a short story based on the Cenobite Demon character that Barbie Wilde the actress had portrayed in "Hellraiser 2 : Hellbound, in the Paul Kane and Marie O'Regan edited anthology "Hellbound Hearts". That story blew my mind as well, and for those who are of like mind, there are two equally brilliant Sister Cilice stories in this book that complete a Sister Cilice trilogy. I also recall Barbie commenting, when approached to write and put together this collection of genre spanning short stories something along the lines of, "But I don't write Horror". I for one, am so glad that she went for it and was mistaken in that thought. But the horror genre doesn't nearly even begin to encompass what she accomplishes here. There's Horror, a touch of Sci-Fi, and well, such a blend of imagination and creativity that labels might just as well be checked at the door, or perhaps, portal. This is a wild (see what I did there) ride of dark, erotic, frightening, creepy, and sometimes graphic content, that is never predictable, formulaic, or clichéd. This is clearly an author possessed of the kind of rare talent, creativity and imagination to take the reader anywhere she chooses, in a thoroughly gripping, engaging, and well structured manner. You don't ever see it coming, and even after it does, you're left thinking and sometimes simply stunned, in a sort of deep set afterglow. There is also some spectacular art included here, by the likes of Clive Barker, Nick Percival, Eric Gross, Tara Bush, and others, that nicely supplements the brilliant imagery already firing in the reader's imagination. Brilliantly done, both epic and intimate, chilling and erotic, and completely mesmerizing. Godspeed with the next work or works that Barbie Wilde decides to bring us.

Single. Story. Rocked. There wasn't even one dud hiding within these gems. What there was was perversity, erotically charged horror, body horror, bizarro horror, aliens and unbelievably awesome artwork. The artwork was a feast for the eyes, as much as the stories were a feast for my twisted brain and soul. Artists like Daniele Serra and Clive Barker shine within and each tale is prefaced by works (paintings, drawings) representing some facet of the story. Speaking of which, these were my favorites:Sister Cilice - starts us off. She appears in three stories in this collection and I loved all three. The Sister is a nun, albeit an unsatisfied one. Since playing with yourself is a sin last I knew, there's no way the Sister is making it into heaven. But she is making it.Zulu Zombies-This was an unusual zombie tale. Words of caution to you: If you ever find yourself in possession of a bottle which contains the spirits of Zulu warriors, be careful with it! This tale made me chuckle in horrified delight.American Mutant - In which Reverend Billy Bob discovers he has a son. But his son isn't normal, and the good Reverend immediately begins to scheme as to how he can exploit his son's aberrations.Botophobia - is a fear of basements. Lorraine is afraid of her parents' basement and for damn good reason. She is scared of face sucking spiders, but there are things much, much worse than that waiting for her in the cellar.Polyp - Definition: Colon polyps are growths on the lining of your colon or rectum. I loved this messed up, NASTY little short and the artwork for this tale was disturbing-but not nearly as disturbing as what happens when Vincent heads to the doctor for his yearly colonoscopy. (I strongly advise you not read this story while you're eating.)Writer's Block -Started off reminding me of Misery, but then veered off somewhere into hot sex with a 500+year old witch and you know it can only go downhill from there. There's no other way to say it-this collection KICKED BUTT ! It had everything-erotic horror, bizarre bloody situations, messed up fairy tales, humor and excellent writing. I can't help but admire the imagination from which a collection like this could emanate. Seriously, Barbie Wilde's imagination is a place only the brave and twisted should enter. I warn you though, once you enter, you might not want to leave. I was sad when this collection was over.My highest possible recommendation to those horror readers that love bizarro, erotic horror, body horror and just plain messed up fun!*I received a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is it.* *I am fighting hard to post this review to Amazon, but they're sure not making it easy. This will be my fourth submission. I'm not sure what their problem is.*

I could not put it down. You will love it. The detail Barbie gives to her characters, just makes you hungry all the more to devour each page of all its richness. It's dark, funny and yes, quite scary. My favorite book that I have read this year. And absolutely one of my all-time favorites that I have ever read. Pick it up,you won't be disappointed!! It also has fantastic artwork and a forward by Chris Alexander and an Afterword by Jen and Sylvia Soska. Some of my favorites in the book: Zulu Zombies- Not the zombies you are use to reading about, and they are nothing like what you have seen. This one is my favorite. It just makes you think what if.. this really happened, what in the world would I do? Could I survive? Or for how long would I survive?Gaia- your first perception of her is one thing at the beginning, and by the end,it will leave you breathless.

It was hard to stop reading - I think it will appeal to pre-teens, teens, and adults, whether or not you are involved in synchronized swimming! Well-developed characters and great editing!

The story is inspirational in more than encouraging the reader to participate in a sport, setting goals and realizing them even under adversity. It translates to the goals and determination of life. A very good read for anyone, really.

"Synchs" a fun and entertaining story with positive personal values and themes By Paul Calderaro There is a serious lack of sports-themed books featuring a female protagonist, so if that's all this novel was, I think it would still have value. If you have a female athlete in your life, buy this book immediately. There is no doubt she will identify strongly with the story and recognize many of the main character's experiences in her own life. However, even if you aren't raising an athlete, the themes of independence, teamwork, dedication, work ethic, family support and pride in oneself are universal, and they are explored here in an extremely entertaining and engaging way. It doesn't take a sports fanatic (or even a female) to appreciate this story. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it wholeheartedly!
