What starts out as a simple task (after all, Thaddeaus and his twelve-year-old daughter Tweak spotted Nessie just one year prior when the serpent sank their seaplane) turns into a calamitous chain of events involving monsters, family mysteries, shady characters and more of Thaddeaus' unique inventions including a misfiring Chemo electric Plasma elephant Stun Gun. So, put on a pot of tea, open a tin of biscuits, and begin reading. Just be careful not to snort any tea out your nose as you laugh at the latest misadventures of Thaddeaus Shockpocket.

Review "This wonderful series for young adults is filling up young people's Kindles and I Phone bookshelves faster every day! The Shockpockets present young readers with unique role models, men and women alike, who refuse to be defined by anyone else's rules. The Shockpockets will win your heart with their imagination, their unique application of science, and their heart-warming family bond."  The Aether Chronicle

From the Author Author Henry Walton has invented several products of questionable value over the years.  None of these have made it to market. And that is probably for the better. His journeys through the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia have led him to the epic conclusion - The world is Absolutely Brilliant. Difficult sometimes.  Confusing often.  But humorous almost always. Thaddeaus Shockpocket is Henry's first book series for young adults.Illustrator William Kevin Petty studied archeology and worked in museums during his 20's.  His love of history, science and technology combined with world travel while in the service shaped his techno-whimsical illustration style and made him the perfect selection for Thaddeaus Shockpocket.  Kevin has illustrated several books and posters in the Steampunk genre.

About the Author Henry Walton is the author of the popular humorous Steampunk adventure series The Journals of Thaddeaus Shockpocket. He attended university with the initial intent of becoming a full-time writer but ended up with a science degree. Consequently, his creative writing went to the backburner and he set off on a career in high technology and traveled the world for both work and pleasure. Running global sales and marketing organizations gave Henry plenty of opportunity to hone his writing skills in the form of  magazine columns, innumerable technical papers, and copy for several award winning international advertising and marketing campaigns.Several years ago he returned to creative writing and created The Journals of Thaddeaus Shockpocket, a tongue-in-cheek account of the misadventures of a turn-of-the-century English family of inventors and explorers. Henry's confesses that Thaddeaus Shockpocket's combination of adventurer and absent minded inventor comes largely from his father, an RAF pilot in World War II that fit the stereotype of dapper English officer and gentleman. His father was also a prolific home project builder whose creations, as often as not, turned out a bit off-kilter. Also a bit like Thaddeaus, Henry has invented several products of questionable value over the years, none of which have made it to market, and that is probably for the better.Henry attributes much of the success of his books to utilizing humorous short vignettes that weave together into a larger story of a unique family that prevails in spite of themselves. The ease of reading has also made the series popular with reluctant readers in addition to readers at large. To date, the first two books in the series have been published and the third is scheduled to be published in late 2015 or early 2016.

I can't tell you without spoiling this great horror story, but Gareth Topping does it. Reading this, I felt like I was right there in the mud and chaos with Sergeant-Major George Bull, the compassionate but no-nonsense protagonist who must lead his men against an enemy he could never have expected.I was riveted by Topping's depiction of the anxiety and resignation leading up to a fateful charge across "no-man's land." My hands were actually sweating as Bull and his troops went "over the top," with Bull hoping against hope that he--or any of them--would survive. What happens to them is NOT what you'd expect. Not at all.Read this story now!

By Jackie Slevin Wonderful debut novel! This historical novel takes place in London during the 1660s while telling the story of the renowned astrologer William Lilly and his practice of the "observational philosophy" of astrology. The author's research into the London of Lilly's time, the bubonic plague, and Lilly's prediction and subsequent indictment of Great Fire of London make gripping reading for all ages. The sharply drawn characters speak to us across the centuries, giving the reader deep insight into the daily lives of common and uncommon citizens, the art and science of astrology, its practitioners, and society's treatment of those who think outside the box, for better or worse. Highly recommended for anyone with an inquiring mind, especially for those who have seen astrology work in one form or another. Bravo, Mr. Venables!

It is a great mix of facts and fiction, and is gripping from the very start. It follows the story of young Tom, who meets renowned Astrologer William Lilly(who he later on becomes apprenticed to). A tragic tale of love and loss, Tom has to push himself through some very tough times.I couldn’t put down this book and would recommend it to any reader, young or old.

I loved how it's not explicit in describing the inappropriate behavior but focuses more on how something makes a child feel, which I think is more to the point as these situations can be subtle at first. Great example of courage even when scared. The trusted grown-up buddy worksheet at the end is a great visual project to do with your kids.

It's so important to be able to talk about scary things without making your children afraid of the world. Reading Lauren's Kingdom all curled up safe, sound and cozy allowed us to answer questions in a safe & secure way and teach the important lesson that it is okay to tell. The drawings are so sweet and appealing. Well done!! Thank you to Lauren for sharing her story and making it easier to protect children everywhere.

By Jennifer I can echo the words of another reviewer that there is no disclosure or warning for parents about the subject matter of this book. My daughter also chose it off the shelf at the local library. We started reading it and I was SHOCKED when it went down the path of abuse after several pages. I had to stop reading and decide if I was going to continue. I brought the book back to the library and they agreed that the children's section was NOT an appropriate place for this book and removed it from their shelves. The subject matter is SO important to discuss but I felt blindsided by this book. This is NOT a book I want my 6 year old taking off the shelf and reading on her own. I am upset that there was no warning to parents or any indication of its subject matter somewhere on the cover.

From School Library Journal Baby/Toddler—These striking titles feature distinguished artwork, destined to appeal to curious young minds. On the Farm gives a familiar subject renewed life through Dogi's wonderfully expressive animal faces rendered in liquid acrylics with airbrushing. Calves and cows, chickens and chicks, foals and horses, and other adult-baby creature pairings are accompanied by one simple sentence per page and the onomatopoeic word for each. In Time to Build, simple sentences explain what a tape measure, saw, wrench, drill, screwdriver, and hammer do, while carefully detailed pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations depict a variety of people using the tools. On the final spread, readers see their results: a tree house. Solid selections.

When Cilla Swaney returns to her Southern roots from traveling the world as a military brat, she's eager to break free of her life-long role as the major's "good little daughter." She vows to, for once, explore her own interests...especially magick and Wicca. However, adjusting to life in the homeland she barely knows is keeping her from seeking out her inner goddess. First her church-going grandmother threatens to rat her out if she sets a Wiccan-wandering toe out of line. Then, at her new charter school, the first girl she meets steals her grimoire and casts a spell that sets their shared locker afire. Finally, when that same girl invites her to a coven, Cilla's sister argues she doesn't have the guts to attend. But it's the dark-haired hottie at school who really ignites Cilla's flame. When Emilio shows up at her coven, she starts believing in her ability to finally conjure her own magick.Until all Hades breaks loose with a prank gone wrong, and Emilio is possibly to blame. Will Cilla be able to keep the boy, her coven, and the trust of her family, or will this Southern Wiccan get battered and fried?

Review SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN casts a spell that warms the heart. With characters to root for and a sincere teenage voice, it reminds us that there's more beneath the surface than a stereotype.  -- Lisa Gail Green, author of SOUL CROSSED. In SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN, S.P. Sipal deftly spins a unique premise into a fun adventure made all the more enjoyable by her narrator's unique voice. -- Kaitlin Bevis, author of the Daughters of Zeus series 4 STARS! A well-written coming of age story focused on the idea of finding your true self and what you believe even when it isn't easy. I really enjoyed the book and hope to see more from S.P. Sipal. -- Jen Streck of Psychocat Reads Reviews SOUTHERN FRIED WICCAN is "definitely not a watered down, cookie-cutter witch story. Oh no. It's about a girl as normal as you and I finding her own voice and forging her own path in a somewhat taboo religion: Wicca... I loved it!" -- Randi from Bell, Book, and Candle Reviews

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good job! By S. Flesher I bought this for my teenage daughter to read on our long car ride to the south for spring break. She was enjoying it so much she kept reading it aloud to me, which made me wish we had an audiobook of it. It was entertaining for both of us! My daughter could relate to Cilla, except for the living in the south thing. I appreciated the sharp writing and clever storyline. Good job!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Served With a Side of Monty By Priya J. Sridhar I don't often post five star reviews, or any text reviews, but this book deserved it. The first page hooked me, and I stayed up till midnight last night to finish it. A very good read, Susan! So we have a military brat assigned to a home front and hating every minute of it. Priscilla aka Cilla has seen much of the world but not much freedom; her grandmother is the queen of micromanagers, restricting Cilla as much as possible while running an organic farm and catering business. When Cilla starts researching Wicca as a means to channel her inner power, local Goth Val befriends her and invites her to a coven. Cilla has to sneak out so that her God-fearing grandmother won't ground her forever, under the guise of researching her role as a witch in a Macbeth adaptation. But some secrets can't be kept forever, especially in such a small town . ..On reading this book, I feel like Susan Sipal wrote it for me; she detailed exactly what it was like to be in a situation where you have no control, where you have to break from tradition to find your thoughts and place in the world. She almost demonstrates the novel as a democracy, giving each character a voice and a motivation. G-ma for example irked me because I know a G-ma in real life, but then she gets to sit down and tell her story, as well as showing genuine affection for Cilla. People have layers, and they aren't always the authority figures or antagonists. Honestly the mercy in this story towards certain characters shows hope that understanding can happen, especially in a region with a lot of prejudice. Also, there's a sweet snake named Monty, and I normally don't like snakes. There needs to be a Monty fandom, especially on Tumblr; no one should ever hurt him.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. not what I thought By Michael I ordered this book to give to a dear family friend who's husband has cancer. They have two adorable little girls under age 6 and she was very unsure about if she was going to tell her kids and if so, exactly what she would say. I read it like it was an explanation and reading it to your kids will help them understand. But read more like explaining or talking about the child getting cancer than an explanation for it. In any event I'm not positive how it went, or if it was used. I would suggest doing more research before buying to be sure its what you want.
