How to Draw With Your Funny Bone, by Elwood Smith

Review "Sage instruction for would-be cartoonists from a veteran, self-billed 'Trained Professional Artist.'As the introduction suggests, this is more an overview of Smith's personal approach than a systematic guidebook. He mixes standard starting points-looking analytically at photos or clip art, working from basic 2-D and 3-D shapes-with pages of sample caricatures and cartoons that interpret images in goofy ways or add comical details. Photos of pigs, mostly, but also pictures of an old car, a goat skull and other promising items serve as inspiration for the galleries of quick sketches. Many of these come with hand-lettered comments: 'Light-bulb pig'; 'Here's a picture of an old sofa.' These complement the breezy main text: 'Even food you think is yucky can be fun to draw.' He also describes-though doesn't actually illustrate-using a lightbox, and he closes by urging readers to develop their own styles, providing a pair of blank pages as encouragement to limber up those artistic 'funny bones.' Smith's pictures are always good for a hoot, though tyros will get a truer start from Ed Emberley's classic manuals." -Kirkus Reviews". young artists will come to appreciate that when you use your funny bone to draw, anything can happen." - Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews

As Elwood explains his methods in a fun and easy to grasp way as if he's sitting there beside you. He shows creative techniques that only a trained professional artist would know.If you know of a person who loves to draw and could use some inspiration, get them this book. It's as much a how-to book as a why-not book. Full of Elwood's beautiful colorful hand drawn artwork.

In my opinion, this book is a fun read for the young, and the young at heart (like myself). Every page is packed full of fun illustrations, with encouraging text to guide the artist along. The instructions are basic, but I think that's the point. Elwood demonstrates that you can draw just about anything by using nothing more than basic shapes. For young artists, this will provide a great starting point. For older established artists, it's worth purchasing simply to enjoy Elwood's work (which was my reason for buying this).I highly recommend this book.

Wonderfully Funny, Quirky, and Original By Will Osborne Whether you're eight or eighty, this book will tickle your funny bone and inspire you to put it to good use. I laughed out loud frequently as I read Elwood's commentaries and asides, and the illustrations are (no surprise) rich with the quirky humor that has made Elwood one of the most respected illustrators in the business. You should buy at least two copies - one to keep and another (or a dozen!) to give away to anyone who needs a good laugh or wants to pick up a pencil and discover their own inner Elwood. Highly recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fun early chapter book By Caryn Amelia Bedelia and her friends clean up a vacant lot in order to build a clubhouse, but once the lot is neat, its owner decides to implement a few plans of her own. With an eye-catching cover, plenty of illustrations, and a generous font size, this makes a good early chapter book. The plot itself is a bit absurd in spots, but many readers have come to expect that from Amelia Bedelia books. It’s amusing when Amelia takes so many clichés literally, although a few are obscure enough to be unfamiliar to some students, and those might require a little explanation from an adult. While this one stands on its own okay, it would likely make more sense when read after the first five in the series.

He really likes books, but he will only sit still for a page or two before getting bored & running away.My daughter was the same way when she was his age & for her 1st birthday I got her "10 Little Ladybugs" which turned out to be her favorite book (she still asks me to read it to her & she's 6). I wondered if my son would have the same response, so I bought it.I don't know what it is about counting bug books, but I swear my son just adores this book. If I start reading it he will sit & look at each page intently & touch all the pages. He loves it from beginning to end.And at times when I can't read it to him I will catch him sitting on the floor trying to flip through the pages by himself. It is so cute!I HIGHLY recommend this book (& several others of it's kind). They are short, simple, rhythmic, easy & fun to read. Kids LOVE them! :)

So engaging for toddlers By Bonnie Brae I read this book to a Sunday School class of toddlers, and when they kept wanting me to read it again, I knew my own kids would enjoy it, too. Both my son and daughter loved this book, but for different reasons. My daughter loved the butterflies at the end and all the colors, and my son loved to touch the caterpillars as we went along.

Really great counting book; colorful and engaging. The only reason I give this 4 stars is that when it arrived, it was signed signed inside the front cover unexpectedly. However, all the other pages were perfect.

Abby Spencer Goes to Bollywood, by Varsha Bajaj

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Thirteen-year-old Abby Spencer longs for excitement in her happy but uneventful life as a middle schooler in Houston, Texas. After she has a severe allergic reaction to coconut, Abby finds the excitement for which she has been waiting. Needing details about Abby's inherited medical history, her mother contacts the girl's father for the first time in more than 13 years. Soon after, Abby finds herself traveling to India on a whirlwind trip to meet him—a Bollywood film star—for the first time. If not for the Indian setting, Abby Spencer would be a typical, cute-but-nothing-special story of a young girl meeting her estranged father. Abby is a sweet, relatable character, but it's the lush backdrop that sets this book apart. The narrator describes the beauty and the extreme poverty of Mumbai. She feeds beggars and street dogs and reflects on her own day-to-day luxuries in comparison. She learns some Hindi words and phrases, tastes Indian foods, and spends a day on a Bollywood film set. A light, clean romance adds a second plot thread, but this story is mainly about the teen's exploration of her Indian heritage and the relationships between Abby and her parents. Pair with Narinder Dhami's Bollywood Babes (Random, 2006) or Kashmira Sheth's Boys Without Names (HarperCollins, 2010).—Leigh Collazo, Ed Willkie Middle School, Fort Worth, TX

Review "There's some fun in Abby's first-class travel, budding romance, and dream-come-true scenario of one's unknown parent turning out to be a celebrity. . ." The Bulletin of The Center for Children's Books, April 2014"Abby is a sweet, relatable character, but it's the lush backdrop that sets this book apart. School Library Journal, April 2014". . .readers will want for Abby what she wants for herself--to find her place in her two families--and should be touched and satisfied by the story's ending. . . this story showcases the glamour and grit of Mumbai and gives readers an entertaining glimpse of backstage Bollywood." Kirkus Reviews, February 1, 2014"Abby's extravagant travels and first romance are enough to satisfy and amuse." Publishers Weekly, January 10, 2014

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a fun book By MS Abby Spencer has never met her father. What she knows is that her American mother dated him in college, he went back to India, and his mother tried but couldn’t get in touch with him there. When Abby has an allergic reaction that might be hereditary, she and her mother try harder to reach him. He’s been elusive because he’s been going by a stage name. He’s now Naveen Kumar, big Bollywood superstar and heartthrob.Soon Abby is on a plane to Mumbai to meet her estranged father, who had no idea about her existence. She’s wowed by the people, the city, and her famous father and his films. How do they break it to the public that he has a daughter? Will Abby be able to keep this secret until that time comes? This was a fun, light read. I loved Abby’s voice, her real feelings about family, and her enthusiasm about India and her father’s side of the family. I’m sure the middle grade audience will adore this book. I read this via NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Deliciously fun By Stephanie Samphire SO MUCH FUN! After spending her first thirteen years with no knowledge of her father, Abby discovers that he not only wants to be her dad after all, but he's pretty much the king of Bollywood - and of course she's flown out to meet him! It's a delicious fantasy, but what made me love it was the warm heart at the center of the story. I loved Abby, her exuberance, her sense of fun, and her deep vulnerabilities, too. I loved the adults in the story, too, with their complicated relationships. What happened between her parents was deeply frustrating and in some ways tragic, but there were no out-and-out bad guys in their story, and that made it so much more interesting. The writing style didn't always work for me, personally, but the storytelling was AMAZING - I was so gripped by it, from the first moment that Abby asked her mom about the story of her dad, I just could not stop reading! I devoured it. I'd love to read a sequel, just because the characters and situation are so much fun, but really, I'll happily read whatever Varsha Bajaj writes next. A fabulous discovery!

Tween Fun By VCarter When thirteen-year-old Abby's teacher poses the essay question, What do you want the most, Abby lies and writes excitement, but what she really wants is to meet her father. In a twist of coconut-allergy fate, she ends up getting both in one person--a dad who's a Bollywood mega-star heart-throb! After recovering from her emergency trip to the hospital, Abby travels to India to meet the dad she's never known, and in an unexpected bonus, she meets a boy who might be her very own heart-throb. The larger culture clash of an American girl finding her Indian roots is set amidst another clash--between India's extremely wealthy citizens and those who live in the direst poverty. And while Abby learns about India, her superstar dad must learn what it means to be a father. ABBY SPENCER GOES TO BOLLYWOOD is a sweet adventure about finding family--those who are related to you and those you pick up along life's journey.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cat's Pajamas By S. Czurylo This is hands-down one of our all time favorite books. As parents, we love it as much as our daughter. We have had had more mileage from it than most books, as it has served us well for over two years now, beginning around when our daughter was 18 months. Same story as the other reviewers - I found it in the library and immediately ordered it. It is in my top 5 for must own, right up there with the board book of Jam Berry, and I am highly selective about what I will actually buy and alot shelf space to owning. I wish I could find more books this cool.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hip, beatnik board book By N. Combs I happened across this book at the library when my son was a year old, and now at 15 months, I'm getting him his own copy. Although it says it's for 18 months and up, this is suitable for younger children~ I wish we'd found it sooner. If you & your child like to play games with clapping or a beat to them, and you don't mind putting a catty-sounding whine in your voice to emphasise certain words (meow, chow, howl, yowl, and growl), this is very easily one of the most enjoyable books I've found to make interactive. This book had my little boy grabbing a rattle and making a beeline for my lap when he saw me pick it up. I'd lightly bounce him from side to side while I shook the rattle (except for the "Hey! Cool it cats!" part) and read through the short, rhyming pages. As another reviewer mentioned, the length of the text is perfectly suited for babies; Although my son will discard some of his books about two-thirds of the way through, he will happily bounce through this one to the very end.The brightly accented, loosely rendered beatnik cats and cityscapes/alleyscapes are wonderfully expressive. There's also a shadowy cat that appears on each layout that makes for a fun hide and seek element within the book, although once your child is familiar with the story, they'll have their finger on it the moment you turn the page.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I don't know why, but my 15 m.o. LOVES this book. By Magpie It's a lot like the Sandra Boynton books (Pajama time, Barnyard Dance, Snuggle Puppy)....very silly, very catchy words. My son thinks it's the best.

Sophia Belfort was a child prodigy, and her above-average intelligence lead her parents, her dad especially, to treat her like she was older than she really was—they made her see a psychologist for one, bought her books that were meant for an older audience and asked her to go to school in a grade level too advanced not for her intelligence but for her age. Still, they limited her like she was incapable of thinking for her own. She wasn’t allowed to hang out at a friend’s house after school or go to a summer camp with the other kids. These caused Sophia to become disobedient and distant, and her relationship with her parents suffered......Until a friendly ghost named Kate showed up in her room and took her to the most majestic!

The way it was exciting, dramatic and sweet. I have seen very few other books that can emphasize on feeling so much. Secondly, the way you mixed the dialogue and narratortion. You didn't make the dialogue boring or the narratortion long. Finally, I found it a very good book to read at night or in the day. You didn't make it scary or to LA LA LA. Elisabeth, age 9

Gray After reading The Little Melzy and Max the Robot from this author I adventured The Little Sophia shortly after. My two children loved the prior book and I was hoping for the same with this one. Fortunately, the same thing happened. The Little Sophia is a sumptuous feast of visuals and Sophia herself is a precocious little gem that my kids warmed up to quickly. The writing is so vibrant and even though it can easily be conveyed to children, it in no way comes across as pedestrian. Often, children’s books are just caricatures of other works with stilted dialog and a quick exit. Not so with this one; the characters are multidimensional creations that are fun to latch on to and even Kate the ghost was easily digestible. Suspension of disbelief is definitely not an issue here. From the mystery of the library and Sophia’s fantastic experience with Cinderella to learning about the greatest creative minds, the book casts a spell that isn’t easy to break. By the end, my kids were already demanding that a reread occur. When that happens I know that I’ve made a wise purchase. So, in summation, if anyone is looking for an overly imaginative book with a wonderful protagonist and a unique story line, you should definitely give this work a try. I have no doubt your children will thank you.

National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Who (National Geographic Little Kids First Big Books), by Jill Esbaum

Review "A lot of effort went into National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Who to make it beautiful, to make it relevant, and to make it something a child would want to read (or be read to) multiple times. Every entry is more than a biography; for example, King Tut is used to introduce Howard Carter, the archeologist who discovered Tut’s sarcophagus. The reader is presented with not only with Carter’s biography but also with a map and ancient Egyptian history." -- New York Journal Of Books"This book was written and designed with a young audience in mind. Accessible writing, beautiful illustrations, and a navigable organization make this title a first choice when seeking out information about famous people, past and present." -- Asheville Citizen-Times

Thinking and Asking Questions By Meelia The National Geographic Little Kids books are favorites in our house. The Big Book of Dinosaurs and the World Atlas are already among our most read books, so I was excited to add this book to our collection. People often critique these books for not going into enough detail, however, I have found that they have the perfect amount of detail for little children. This book got my 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl thinking and asking questions about all sorts of people and inventions and places. They have asked to get books from the library about some of the people written about here; I even found myself learning new things. It's a nice change from the worlds of princesses and trucks that I find so many of their books are about these days. This book is full of real photos and maps, which quickly grabbed my children's attention. It covers athletes, artists, astronauts, civil rights activists, inventors, authors, and presidents, just to name a few.The 27 profiles in this book are:King TutAristotleMichelangeloWilliam ShakespeareJane AustenSequoyahSacagaweaAbraham LincolnElizabeth BlackwellIsabella BirdMatthew HensonMarie CurieMohandas GandhiAmelia EarhartGolda MeirAnsel AdamsFrida KahloTenzing NorgayElla FitzgeraldJackie RobinsonMaya AngelouMartin Luther King, Jr.Neil ArmstrongDong ZhimingThe BeatlesMichelle BacheletMalala YousafzaiThere are also an additional 33 mini profiles covering different people, but these are truly mini and just a small paragraph/photo. The mini profiles still got my children asking questions and wanting to know more, but they're nowhere near as detailed as the 4-page spreads for the people listed above.I highly recommend this book as a collection to any small child's library, as it teaches children that there's such a big world out there for them to read about and discover.

Should be titled First Big Book of Who of the (Mostly) Western World/Culture By Yim Tonia Chu I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed how unbalanced the famous people were picked for it. 41% of the famous people are from USA, 37% from Europe. Throwing in a few names from the non-western non-industrialized nations/continents seemed an afterthought. Out of the 5000+ years of history of China, the only Chinese picked for this book is a paleontologist who was the most successful dinosaur hunter. Here is the list of names:King TutWangari MaathaiNelson MandelaDalai LamaDong ZhimingGandhiNain Singh RawatJunko TabeiTenzing NorgayMalala YousafzaiWolfgang MozartElizabeth BlackwellGertrude BellHester StanhopeIsabella BirdJames CookJane AustinJane GoodallShakespeareThe BeatlesBerthe MorisotEinsteinAristotleda VinciGalileoMarco PoloMichelangeloMarie CurieFerdinand MagellanMikhail BaryshinkovPablo PicassoGolda MeirFrida KahloAbraham LincolnAmelia EarhartAnsel AdamsCesar ChavezEleanor RooseveltElla FitzgeraldGeorge Washington CarverGeorgia O'KeeffeHarriet TubmanHelen KellerJackie RobinsonJohn MuirLouisa May AlcottMartin Luther King, Jr.Matthew HensonMaurice SendakMaya AngelouNeil ArmstrongRachel CarsonSacagaweaSequoyahShel SiversteinThomas EdisonThurgood MarshallAmyr KlinkMichelle Bachelet

Trying to Highlight "The First" Women Puts my Daughter Under the Glass Ceiling By Gabrielle This book has just enough information that we feel satiated yet desire to keep researching for more. What I didn't like was that every woman in the book is "The first to..." Which feels to me like I'm putting my 5-year-old under the glass ceiling. My 5-year-old doesn't understand why being the FIRST woman to do such and such is important or even interesting, and I distinctly feel that by having to explain to her with each female highlighted why being the first woman to have done something is noteworthy indicates to her that she is somehow less important/capable than a man. It's awesome that so many women are highlighted, but how about picking women who did awesome things because they did awesome things, not just because they were the first woman to do it after a bazillion men had.
