Review "A lot of effort went into National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Who to make it beautiful, to make it relevant, and to make it something a child would want to read (or be read to) multiple times. Every entry is more than a biography; for example, King Tut is used to introduce Howard Carter, the archeologist who discovered Tut’s sarcophagus. The reader is presented with not only with Carter’s biography but also with a map and ancient Egyptian history." -- New York Journal Of Books"This book was written and designed with a young audience in mind. Accessible writing, beautiful illustrations, and a navigable organization make this title a first choice when seeking out information about famous people, past and present." -- Asheville Citizen-Times

Thinking and Asking Questions By Meelia The National Geographic Little Kids books are favorites in our house. The Big Book of Dinosaurs and the World Atlas are already among our most read books, so I was excited to add this book to our collection. People often critique these books for not going into enough detail, however, I have found that they have the perfect amount of detail for little children. This book got my 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl thinking and asking questions about all sorts of people and inventions and places. They have asked to get books from the library about some of the people written about here; I even found myself learning new things. It's a nice change from the worlds of princesses and trucks that I find so many of their books are about these days. This book is full of real photos and maps, which quickly grabbed my children's attention. It covers athletes, artists, astronauts, civil rights activists, inventors, authors, and presidents, just to name a few.The 27 profiles in this book are:King TutAristotleMichelangeloWilliam ShakespeareJane AustenSequoyahSacagaweaAbraham LincolnElizabeth BlackwellIsabella BirdMatthew HensonMarie CurieMohandas GandhiAmelia EarhartGolda MeirAnsel AdamsFrida KahloTenzing NorgayElla FitzgeraldJackie RobinsonMaya AngelouMartin Luther King, Jr.Neil ArmstrongDong ZhimingThe BeatlesMichelle BacheletMalala YousafzaiThere are also an additional 33 mini profiles covering different people, but these are truly mini and just a small paragraph/photo. The mini profiles still got my children asking questions and wanting to know more, but they're nowhere near as detailed as the 4-page spreads for the people listed above.I highly recommend this book as a collection to any small child's library, as it teaches children that there's such a big world out there for them to read about and discover.

Should be titled First Big Book of Who of the (Mostly) Western World/Culture By Yim Tonia Chu I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed how unbalanced the famous people were picked for it. 41% of the famous people are from USA, 37% from Europe. Throwing in a few names from the non-western non-industrialized nations/continents seemed an afterthought. Out of the 5000+ years of history of China, the only Chinese picked for this book is a paleontologist who was the most successful dinosaur hunter. Here is the list of names:King TutWangari MaathaiNelson MandelaDalai LamaDong ZhimingGandhiNain Singh RawatJunko TabeiTenzing NorgayMalala YousafzaiWolfgang MozartElizabeth BlackwellGertrude BellHester StanhopeIsabella BirdJames CookJane AustinJane GoodallShakespeareThe BeatlesBerthe MorisotEinsteinAristotleda VinciGalileoMarco PoloMichelangeloMarie CurieFerdinand MagellanMikhail BaryshinkovPablo PicassoGolda MeirFrida KahloAbraham LincolnAmelia EarhartAnsel AdamsCesar ChavezEleanor RooseveltElla FitzgeraldGeorge Washington CarverGeorgia O'KeeffeHarriet TubmanHelen KellerJackie RobinsonJohn MuirLouisa May AlcottMartin Luther King, Jr.Matthew HensonMaurice SendakMaya AngelouNeil ArmstrongRachel CarsonSacagaweaSequoyahShel SiversteinThomas EdisonThurgood MarshallAmyr KlinkMichelle Bachelet

Trying to Highlight "The First" Women Puts my Daughter Under the Glass Ceiling By Gabrielle This book has just enough information that we feel satiated yet desire to keep researching for more. What I didn't like was that every woman in the book is "The first to..." Which feels to me like I'm putting my 5-year-old under the glass ceiling. My 5-year-old doesn't understand why being the FIRST woman to do such and such is important or even interesting, and I distinctly feel that by having to explain to her with each female highlighted why being the first woman to have done something is noteworthy indicates to her that she is somehow less important/capable than a man. It's awesome that so many women are highlighted, but how about picking women who did awesome things because they did awesome things, not just because they were the first woman to do it after a bazillion men had.
