Ghosts everywhere By Ashley It's a wonder how many books there would be or how many pages they would be if Mattie, the main character, didn't constantly remind the reader her past. It's like reading the third Fifty Shades of Grey book, they were doing it so much you skipped half of the book! By the time you're in this book, I'd expect the reader knew a thing or two about her past!I love the Ghost Files series though, the second book is my favorite because it was fast paced and new things were happening. The third one will be interesting because the book ended but there are new ghosts and new horrors brought to light that were given entries into the story and I really hope the author doesn't forget them.I read all three books fast, thinking I was coming up on the final book (this one) only to realize that a fourth book is in production.Suggestion for book four: summarize the horror show, that happened to Mattie in her past, in a prologue, then stop talking about it!

Disappointing By Anna Mayfan THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERSI have read all three books in the series and I am a big fan on the story.I do have to say though that this book seemed rushed. The others were written a bit better than this one. Mattie has always bordered on a Mary-Sue like character but this one really cinched it.My biggest complaint is how rushed everything feels. There are random character facts tossed in carelessly between dialogue because it seems like the author realized she forgot to really explain the characters to is so they're sprinkled in randomly. There's no flow. One second she is at home with everybody, goes to her room to relax were she has a brief conversation with Silas, and suddenly everybody is gone and Mrs Cross is at work working the night shift? Did a few hours pass? They get into a boat and chat for a few sentences and suddenly they're so far away from land it will take 20 minutes to get to a public dock? When did this happen?Mattie is portrayed as this rough tough girl but is constantly letting men control her life. She ends up in the hospital 3-4 times and in the span of a couple of days hits her head over and over and it seems overdone. You need to better define your characters personalities. Is Mattie a tough woman or a scared little girl? She supposedly is a loner but keeps forming these instant bonds with only hot men. She allows a man to call her mine repeatedly which, admittedly made the feminist in me almost put the book down right there. You say she's a take no s*** type person but she constantly needs rescuing by literal knights without the shining armorEven Mary is now starting to read the same as Mattie, a tough spunky girl who can communicate with ghosts in some way. There was a lack of ghost activity in this book as well. We're moving into demonic territory and losing the basic concept we all started reading for. There was a BIG error in the last few chapters as well when Jake and Mason pop up where at first it seems that Jake is the killer bringing shovels, and then Paul appears where his name changes from Mitch and suddenly Jake isn't the killer but it's Paul/Mitch. Rushed. A good read through would have fixed that. Also, and this is a personal opinion, but please stop using real people and popular songs to describe things. Mattie sings this popular song, her dad looks like this popular actor on a hit TV show. It comes off as cheap product placement and like you can't describe your own charactersThis is a good well thought out story but you need to take your time with it and avoid pumping out another book for the sake of selling more.Lastly, nobody really starts a book series from the last book we really don't need the constant recaps from the previous ones. A slight mention for the sake of character conversation is fine but we get paragraphs of recap in dialogue. It's completely unnecessary.I assume it's so you can attract a wider audience of people who haven't read the first two but primarily people read book 1 before book 2 and doing that just frustrates people like me who read the previous books and want to keep the story moving not re-read everything I just read. It also prevents the random few who maybe stumbled on to book three and now no longer need to purchase the first two because you practically rewrote it all in this book.TLDR: Please, some better character development. Give your characters independent voices. Get back to your roots. And please stop with the lengthy re-caps.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Can't wait for the next one By C Thilmany Seventeen year-old, Mattie, who has seen ghosts since her mother attempted to kill her, is now being sought out by them, ever since she helped the ghost of her murdered foster sister. But a group of horribly tortured and killed girls want her dead, saying that what’s happened to them is all her fault; the murderer was chanting her name, over and over again. And since ghosts can touch Mattie, the threat is huge. It’s confusing for Mattie as she’s not quite sure who or what she is as more things are learned. I won’t give anything else away other than to say she’s got a guardian angel, a protector, a demon who wants to “help” her and a father she’s just meeting for the first time and doesn’t know quite what she thinks of him. This is a combination horror story/mystery with some romance thrown in for good measure. It’s easy to be in Mattie’s head and experience her emotions. Better have some tissues handy for this one. The characters and situations are interesting and with each book more is revealed about her genealogy as well as those of Dan and the family he was kidnapped from as a child. And we get hints about a bigger scheme behind everything that brought us to this point. The first book grabbed me right away and I’m still sucked into Mattie’s world. I can’t wait to find out what happens next with so many of the characters as well as discovering the truth behind what Mattie is and why everything was arranged for an outcome we’ve yet to learn about.

Sarah, Plain and Tall 30th Anniversary Edition, by Patricia MacLachlan

Amazon.com Review MacLachlan, author of Unclaimed Treasures, has written an affecting tale for children. In the late 19th century a widowed midwestern farmer with two children--Anna and Caleb--advertises for a wife. When Sarah arrives she is homesick for Maine, especially for the ocean which she misses greatly. The children fear that she will not stay, and when she goes off to town alone, young Caleb--whose mother died during childbirth--is stricken with the fear that she has gone for good. But she returns with colored pencils to illustrate for them the beauty of Maine, and to explain that, though she misses her home, "the truth of it is I would miss you more." The tale gently explores themes of abandonment, loss and love.

From School Library Journal Grade 3-6-Glenn Close narrates Patricia MacLachlan's beautiful novels on this fine audio collection. Sarah, Plain and Tall tells the story of Sarah, who came from Maine to answer Jacob's advertisement for a wife and mother, all from the point of view of young Anna. The classic story continues in Skylark, as Anna and her brother, Caleb, must travel with their new mother, Sarah, to Maine when a terrible drought threatens their home. Caleb picks up the story several years later in Caleb's Story, telling of the return of his grandfather, who had abandoned the family when Caleb's father was a young boy. Close, who played the role of Sarah in the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of the first book, creates distinct voices for each character without ever resorting to theatrics. Anna and Caleb's voices mature as listeners progress through the stories, and Close's carefully unobtrusive narration showcases MacLachlan's simple yet poetic words. An interview with Patricia MacLachlan at the end of the collection gives students more information about the author's life and writing process, and about the real-life inspiration for Sarah. A beautiful collusion of an excellent story with a perfect narrator, and a treat for all listeners.Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, ColumbiaCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Review "In a near-perfect miniature novel, two children experience the apprehensions and joys of the possibility of a new mother, when their father invites a mail-order bride to their prairie home." -- "BL.""An exquisite, sometimes painfully touching tale."-- "The New York Times"A book that is filed with wisdom, gentle humor and the practical concerns necessary for a satisfying life. Terse writing and poetic rhythm flow to create a tender story about the fragile beginnings of a family relationship on its way to permanence."-- "School Library Jornal

Then one day, Sarah, a lady from Maine, answers an advertisement their father, Jacob, put in a newspaper, giving new hope to the family of three. Will she be the one to fill the emptiness in their hearts and the silence in their home, at last? Some adjustments _will_ have to be made first. Sarah has to get used to living away from the ocean that she has known and loved all her life. Jacob has to get used to having a headstrong wife who is just as good at carpentry as he is. The children have to get used to a new and unorthodox mother. Yet their hope that everything will work out always shines through."Sarah, Plain and Tall" is a story about people learning to live together and become a family simply because they've grown to love each other. It is also about seeing both new things with old eyes and old things with new eyes. The reader will enjoy this short, joy-filled period in the lives of these characters, whether they are learning how to swim, sliding down haystacks, or tossing cut hair to birds.Patricia MacLachlan uses very simple language, which only highlights her poet's gift of saying volumes and painting landscapes with a few well-chosen words. The images in the novel are as potent as images in poetry, even though everything is in prose. Every last word is meaningful.I need only think of "Sarah, Plain and Tall" to remember that sometimes the simplest children's stories are the best.

The History in Sarah, Plain and Tall By A Customer As I began to read Patricia McLachlan's Sarah, Plain and Tall Iwas instantly thrust into a time machine that took me back to asimpler time and place. A time of farms and wagons pulled byhorses. A time where there were no such things as computers, the Internet or any of the other distractions that we have today. This is how the Witting family lives their lives. Jacob is the father, Anna the older sister and Caleb, the youngest child. Anna and Caleb's mother died the day after she had Caleb and their father hasn't been the same since. Jacob puts an ad in the paper to find a wife and gets a response from Sarah from Maine. This book is a history lesson in disguise. I realize that all historical fiction is has an underlying history lesson, but this book in and its characters are very convincing. The lessons that the reader will learn are valuable and well taught. Sarah Plain and Tall takes place in 1910 and anyone who reads this book will learn about how people lived their life during this time. The book has many pieces of historical information. For example, it talks about how Sarah was wore very plain clothes, made by herself. It talked about how they had to use a plow pulled by a donkey to turn the fields. In one scene, a devastating storm blows through, and the Wittings must go into the barn to keep safe, but they also have to keep the animals safe. This depicts what a large role farm animals played in the livelihood of families during the early 1900's. The book also talks of how the children had to do real chores around the farm to keep it running smoothly. For example, they have to get up and help milk the cows, feed the animals and sometimes house maintenance. All of these are accurate depictions of life on a farm. Jan Susina's article, "American Girls Collection: Barbies with a Sense of History", argues that this series of books uses a nine-year-old girl to teach other girls about American history. Sarah, Plain and Tall is done in the same style of the books in the American Girl's Collection. It gives children a lesson in history, but it is hidden among an interesting story with adventure, drama and comedy. I think that this fact adds to the value of both of the books. If authors can make books that interest children and teach them something about their history, then they are truly effective authors. I think the audience intended for this book needs to be a little more mature than most of the other books we've looked at this semester. This book allows the children to use their imagination. They can imagine what Sarah looks like, how plain she really is. They can see the plows and the farm animals. Being able to see things in their head is a valuable skill for a child to have. I think that this book definitely gives children a glimpse into the past, like stepping onto a time machine. It definitely had more mature subject matter such as death of a parent, finding a new mate for the father figure and children's feelings of abandonment. Whatever the case, Sarah, Plain and Tall is a story for the ages which will be read for years to come.

Love Makes A Family By V Hartley Love Makes a Family Sarah, Plain and Tall, is about a young girl named Anna who tells a love story about how her small family found their missing link to happiness. Anna's mother died at the birth of Caleb, Anna's younger brother. Since the death of her mother things have not seemed right around the prairie, there has been a longing for a mother figure. In the times of covered wagons and tumble weed, a man could write off for a mail order bride; which is what Jacob, Anna's father did. In response a young woman from Maine, named Sarah, showed up on the prairie in a yellow bonnet, she was plain and tall. Instantly the family fell in love with Sarah, she fit the roll of mother, nurturer, lover, and partner. Sarah completed the circle of love that made the family. Sarah, Plain and Tall is a love story, but not your typical love story. It is about the love that a young girl and her family crave for a mother. This story shows the importance of a female roll model in a family. Even though the family was fine and being taken care of, each other family members were missing something. Anna wanted someone to braid her hair, Caleb wanted someone to sing like his mother did, and Jacob wanted a partner to help him with raising his family and to give him affection. This is a love story, but a most unusual one. The structure is strong, and the characters firmly established. (Sutherland) This book shows the effect on how a mother type role is needed in the stability of a family. Once Sarah arrived, things in the family changed. Flowers were being hung up, children were taken care of, haircuts were given, and meals were always prepared. Everyone in the family became happy, and realized on what they had been missing out on since the death of their mother. Although, Sarah missed Maine but she herself found here roll to be satisfying. Sarah's character is a strong independent woman who is needed by three people who crave caring. A woman automatically has the instinct to be a mother. Sarah never realized hers until she found this family. Sarah had a simple life in Maine. She lived with her brother, who was about to be married. Sarah had never really had the opportunity to be needed. In Anna's family Sarah was needed and was loved. She became a mother and a partner over night; she fell in love with the family and her new life. " `We thought you might be thinking of leaving us,' I told her. `Because you miss the sea.' Sarah smiled. `No,' she said. `I will always miss my old home, but the truth of it is I would miss you more.'" The family was completed with Sarah in it, and Sarah's life was completed with the family in it. This book shows that no matter how complete a family is; a mother's love can make the family stable and secure. We all have voids in our lives, we just never know what they are until they are filled.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Amazing By kevin bowers I just got this book today and I couldn't put it down, I read it in just one hour. I would give it a 9.3 out of 10. I gave it a 9.3 because at some points I just found the new character annoying and he was just always there, following Nate. I didn't find it as funny as the other the other books, but I did find the rest of it fantastic and it did have an amazing ending, (and no I will not spoil it) so overall I decided to give it 5 stars. So in conclusion I really enjoyed the read and it kept me hooked throughout the entire novel and I am super excited for the next Big Nate book coming out which is called Big Nate Blasts Off. Thank you for reading this review and I hoped it helped, bye.

Read along to see what friends he finds inside. The book is small in size making it easy for toddlers to hold and turn the pages. She was the first Little Leaguer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in the magazine's sixty-year history. From growing up in Philadelphia to throwing out the ceremonial first pitch—a perfect strike—at Game 4 of the 2014 Major League World Series, her groundbreaking achievements are changing the game for women in athletics and putting a positive new spin on the phrase "throw like a girl."

By Bill Emblom Mo'ne Davis shares her wealth of experiences while playing baseball for her Monarchs baseball team and later for the Mid-Atlantic Region in the Little League World Series. She was fortunate to have a coach to recognize the athletic talent in a 2nd grader and she transferred to a school where she would be able to maximize her talent both scholastically and athletically. Mo'ne took part in baseball, basketball, and soccer and many sacrifices by her and several other individuals led to her success in her athletic endeavors. She met celebrities in sports and music along with President and Mrs. Obama. Her baseball coach for the Monarchs organized trips for the team that took them to cities such as New York, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City, and Cooperstown, New York providing them with memories to last a lifetime.Mo'ne has had to forgo many things that others her age have experienced and she has remained a humble individual appreciative of those who sacrificed so much for her. She is a prime example of one who takes part in three sports rather than concentrating on one. She advises others to give a variety of sports a fair try before deciding whether you want to continue with one or not. Mo'ne Davis is an inspiration to anyone her age and I would highly recommend this book to any parent with a child interested in sports.

By Don Kidwell Until this fellow came along in the 1400s it was thought that what we now know as the Americas was merely the eastern shore of Asia. I found this to be a good, short book with several relevant illustrations that included interesting facts such as the word "America" being the female form of "Amerigo" (making the Statue of Liberty centuries later a good choice for welcoming immigrants to our shores, I would say) , Vespucci being one of the first Europeans to see the Southern Cross in over a thousand years and his being such a talented navigator he could use the position of the stars to estimate the earth's circumference to within 50 miles (rather impressive for back then!) Very good book that I did enjoy!

Brilliant By Phillip Taylor MBE INVOLVED IN OUTSOURCING?HERE’S ANOTHER BRILLIANT BEST FRIENDFROM GLOBE LAW AND BUSINESSAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersDid you know that the construction of the pyramids was outsourced? Makes sense, doesn’t it, when you consider the project management challenges involved. But if you find yourself face to face with the challenges of twenty-first century outsourcing and the inherent contractual issues, this book published recently by Globe Law and Business, could well be your best friend.Within its 285 or so pages, this practical guide brings together the combined expertise of no less than twenty-three outsourcing experts from DLA Piper which, as if you didn’t know, is one of the world’s largest law firms. Edited by Kit Burden, a partner at DLA Piper, this handy volume certainly places some awesomely high powered advice and consultancy at your fingertips.Examined in detail is the end-to-end (or should one say beginning-to-end) life cycle of an outsourcing contract, from initial proposal to procurement, to the management of the project following the signing of the contract. Particularly important here is the guidance provided by this book on current trends, options and market practicesThe outsourcing market has already hit an estimated $280 billion in 2013/2014, with a further anticipated increase of 4% in the year thereafter. As Kit Burden remarks, ‘there has probably never been a better time to write a book about outsourcing and the associated process of negotiating and drafting an outsourcing agreement.’By its very nature, an outsourcing contract can be quite accurately described as a ‘mega deal’, usually valued to the tune of hundreds of millions, even billions. For a number of other reasons -- including human resources, as well as financial issues – an outsourcing contract is much more complex than an ordinary business sale contract. The major difference is that the relationships involved (often cross-border) must be sustained for a foreseeably lengthy period after the contract is signed, during which time certain circumstances may change. Predictably, the need for in-built flexibility in the contractual terms is paramount, but not easy to achieve. To help you cope, this book covers, we would have thought, just about every important aspect involved in outsourcing, from the question of ‘why outsource?’ to negotiation and delivery to multi-jurisdictional deals, warranties, due diligence, liability and indemnity, intellectual property… and so much more.Written in a lively and consistently accessible style, the book provides a global perspective and timely advice on this vital and intricate subject. Whether you are a user of outsourced services, or a provider -- or a lawyer charged with advising clients on outsourcing, it is fair to say that you will find this book indispensable. The publication date is cited as at 2015.
