Here "lybrarians" train to become agents, or "ninja librarians" as Marcus calls them, who go on missions to rescue imperiled writers, including Socrates. Dorrie and her brother use their temporary stay in Petrarch's Library to become apprentices, learning swordplay from Cyrano de Bergerac and the deceptive arts from Casanova. As the pair attempt to return an accidentally stolen document to the archives, they uncover other secrets and mysteries. The lead-up to the kids' discovery of Petrarch's Library is a little slow and the foreshadowing is a bit heavy-handed, but once in the Library, the melding of fantasy, adventure, and history is enlightening. Dorrie is a smart, observant, wannabe sword fighter, while Marcus is the typical teenage brother: a mix of hormones and sarcasm, tempered by a genuine concern for his younger sister. For the most part, the numerous supporting characters have distinct personalities and their special talents and knowledge seem natural. The Library is a vivid, well-drawn world, which helps to compensate for weaker aspects of the plot. The story was engrossing, fun, clever and full of surprises By KidsReads When Dorrie and her brother, Marcus, go chasing after a friend's pet mongoose in the Passaic Public Library, they wind up on an adventure neither anticipated. Hidden in their local library is a portal to the great Petrarch's Library, home to a secret society of Lybrarians, sworn to protect the spread of knowledge. They learn the magical library is a time machine of sorts, connected to smaller libraries throughout the world and throughout all of human history, and the Lybrarians are more than just scholars handing out books. They are skilled warriors, craftsmen and healers, prepared to use any means necessary to save historical figures like Socrates and keep the spread of knowledge flowing. And Dorrie is eager to join their ranks.The Lybrarians decide to let them stay and train with the apprentices for a four-week trial period, at which point they'll decide whether Dorrie and Marcus have what it takes. So the two start training with the master Lybrarians, taking courses in swordplay, stealth and botony. They settle into their temporary life with their fellow apprentices, a collection of kids and teens plucked from various points in history. But when a Lybrarian is kidnapped and all fingers are pointed at Dorrie and Marcus, the two, along with their newfound friends, fight to clear their name and figure out the truth.I'll admit the title threw me. I had expected ninja-star wielding librarians dressed in all black. In fact, the words "ninja librarian" appear exactly once in the book. But that's not a bad thing! The story was engrossing, fun, clever and full of surprises.The librarians in the book are more like warriors than ninjas, and some, like Cyrano de Bergerac, Paracelsus and Hypatia, are real historical figures. The way the book incorporates these and other historical scholars is educational but also seamless. You don't have to know who Hypatia is to follow the story, but taking a moment to look her up adds depth to her character. It's a great way to introduce some important figures who might be lesser known to kids and teens.Dorrie is a spunky, quick-witted heroine with a love of swordplay. She's loyal but proud and makes mistakes along the way. Because of that, she's very easy to identify with, and readers will love her back-and-forth dialogue with her brother, Marcus. Most importantly, Dorrie learns valuable lessons at Petrarch's Library, and her character really develops as the book goes on.The book moves fast, and at times I needed to reread a few pages to orient myself in the story. The action is quite madcap and will keep the reader breathlessly turning the pages. There are also a lot of character names to remember in the beginning, but by the end I didn't have a problem. In fact, the large cast was full of rich and interesting characters with unique personalities. Marcus in particular had me laughing out loud on a number of occasions. Between his love of Star Wars and his sarcastic one liners, he was a lot of fun to read.I hope this is the first in a very long series, because I'd love to spend some more time in Petrarch's Library!Reviewed by Rebecca Czochor

Opening with a bang, the novel charts Dorrie’s journey as she and her brother, Marcus, discover a secret space in the local library while chasing a runaway mongoose. Suddenly they are transported to Petrarch’s Library, the base for a secret society of librarians. After their surprising arrival in the library, they discover that the home of the secret society is not just a connecting point for various libraries around the world—it is linked to the past by giving access to all time periods since the advent of the written word. Dorrie discovers that she is a “keyhand,” someone who has the ability to time travel! When the kids are allowed to stay in Petrarch’s Library, they jump at the chance. Who wouldn’t want to be a ninja librarian for an epic library and help make the world a better place?Readers of all ages who love books and libraries will enjoy this bookish adventure. Dorrie is a real hoot, and her antics (as well as Marcus’s and Moe’s) will keep you laughing throughout the story. I love books and libraries, so when I saw that this book was releasing this year, I was pretty excited, to say the least. This spotlight on libraries and librarians and how amazing they are means a trip to the library is in order! The conclusion certainly leaves the way open for a sequel, and readers will surely want to continue following the adventures of the "accidental keyhand"!

Ninja Librarians: The Accidental Keyhand is it! A secret society of librarians who can pass through time and space via "spoke libraries" in the Lybrariad (from Ancient Athens to 17th Century France) with characters like Cyrano De Bergerac in order to preserve and defend the freedom of thought, writing and speech? Does it get any better? Yes, it does. Dorrie and her brother Marcus, along with their new found friend Ebba, oh yeah, and the mongoose, are a pleasure to get to know. Their missteps and antics throughout the book found me laughing out loud, often. I loved all of the characters, from officious Mr. Scuggins to the historical power-house Hypatia. I highly recommend this wonderful book by Jen Swann Downey.

A Must-Read for the Privacy Professional, the Privacy Regulator, and the Privacy Activist By cjh This work reflects 8 years of research and interviews with 53 chief privacy officers (CPOs) and 26 other stakeholders in the privacy realm. It provides rich lessons for regulators, policymakers, privacy advocates, and in particular, CPOs. The work is a must read for any CPO—chapter 9 is essentially a blueprint to set up a privacy structure within a company that will be successful.More broadly, this effort yields surprising results on what constitutes efficacious privacy protection. Traditionally, privacy advocates and regulators push for more detailed, comprehensive privacy rules. The authors find that such an approach disempowers pro-privacy forces within institutions, and leads to a compliance rather than a leadership mentality. But the message is not as simple as the US approach is better than others. This book deepens the understanding of regulatory approaches by studying privacy implementation in the UK, Germany, Spain, and France. The authors find that two very different systems—the US and Germany—have created the conditions for privacy leadership. Key to this is the idea that regulatory mandates in these countries are both ambiguous yet are enforceable, thus creating accountability; that privacy officers in the two countries have power, independence, and a consultative role with outside parties; that there is transparency in enforcement and in privacy failures (security breach notification); and that CPOs as a group have become a professional body. The duo concludes that regulatory efforts that “keep them (CPOs) on their toes” rather than displace them with compliance-oriented, detailed regulatory postures, are crucial to protection of privacy.

In others, these regulations are simply a penalty that everyone must bear; think TSA. When it comes to information security and privacy laws and regulations, often those perpetrating the crimes are impervious to any or regulation.In Privacy on the Ground: Driving Corporate Behavior in the United States and Europe, authors Kenneth Bamberger and Deirdre Mulligan have written a well-researched and compelling study on global privacy practices. In it, they’ve interviewed numerous chief privacy officers (CPO), regulators, engineers and others in the United States, France, Germany, UK and Spain. If you know a CPO, this book should be on their wish list.Much of the book is spent comparing and contrasting how privacy is done in each of these countries. In addition, the authors show what best practices, regulations, and laws can be most effective.Data and personal privacy have long been important. With that rise of big data and its ensuing analytics, combined with IoT gathering key pieces of personal data; privacy in 2016 is an imperative.The goal of the authors with these interviews was to understand what privacy professionals did right and wrong, and create a set of best practices that the reader can implement.Bamberger is a professor at the Berkeley School of Law, while Mulligan is an associate professor in the School of Information and a co-director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology, and as such, the book has a bit of an academic feel.A key point the book makes is that at the corporate level, privacy isn’t something that can be the responsibility of a single department or individual. Excellent and Important Contribution to Any Privacy Discussion By Mike Hintze Too often, discussions of privacy law and policy take place at a theoretical level and look only at what privacy rules are "on the books." Understanding what companies are actually doing -- not only to respond to law and regulation, but also to build customer trust and protect reputations -- is (or should be) a critical part of any policy discussions. This important work helps close the gap between theory and reality. The drawings and poems remind me of being a kid and first falling in love with America's pastime...baseball. Its a grand slam of fun poems that is a classic of appreciation for the great sport of baseball.

By Amazonbooks4me There are scenes in this book featuring fights (punching, kicking, bleeding, etc.), the use of fireworks to duel, theft, trespassing, fire starting, graffiti, suicide, homophobia, underage smoking, and name calling (even in song form). In a world where social media is trying to encourage kids to not be bullies, this book holds all the wrong character building messages for tween readers. There is even talk between characters about abortion and whether it's right or wrong. That is NOT a topic that should be in a children's book at all.I am not understanding all the 5 star reviews here. This was a very poorly written book. Characters are boring or weird beyond belief. Dialog is too short and consists mostly of name calling or expressing bizarre thoughts or opinions. Descriptions of setting and places are vague. The narrative voice and vocabulary is weak and immature. I do NOT think this book should be categorized as a Children's book. It is most definitely a Young Adult book because of the suggestive, mature topics throughout.The cover if this book is advertised as "the treasure hunt of a lifetime". It is NOT! I was so utterly disappointed. While there is a treasure in the end, there is really no "hunt". Just a lot of wondering and speculation that is not very logical; especially when the main character, Nick, is supposed to be a math and music genius. I don't understand why the author didn't use this character's smarts in the story. Why did the supposed treasure hunt have nothing to do with intricate puzzles and riddles dealing with music or numbers?There were no clues for the characters or the reader to solve. There was no sting of clues to follow - only one set of numbers and a short riddle of a sentence. I expected a real, honest-to-goodness search for treasure that took Nick, Jordan and Zeke all over town; with one clue leading them to another and another. In a way they just end up stumbling on the treasure with none of the characters really thinking anything out methodical or logically among themselves. This was not a "hunt" by any stretch of the imagination.The characters are underdeveloped and not likeable. All the kids that go to Nick's school are bullies, full of hate, or are just plain weird. Nick's locker partner, Zeke, is supposedly gay (he is called "Boylover") and he draws mermaids with silver marker on his arms. I'm not saying him being gay is weird, it's the mermaid drawings. I think it's very offensive that the author has Jordan (Zeke's supposed friend) calling him such a hurtful name. Um, and what kid draws mermaids on themselves? It's like the author is trying to make fun of people who are different. And Jordan also calls Zeke, who is half Korean, "Flatface". I think that's highly offensive and incredibly racist to anyone of Asian ancestry. How did this author get away with this? He should be ashamed of himself!I don't see how anyone could like or relate to the characters of Nick, Jordan, or Zeke. The character of Jordan is just a kid everyone hates and fights with because he is mean and calls everyone names. Zeke is a thief who steal stuff from kids and sells it all for money. And Nick thinks his dead brother, who was a still-born baby, is a tree out in his backyard. Yes…a tree. Firstly, I'm pretty sure it's illegal to bury a human in your backyard. Secondly, no kid, unless he had a severe mental illness would believe that he could talk through a tree to his dead brother and hear his brother's responses back through the "music" that the tree's rustling leaves make. Oh, and Nick talks to the tree using a violin??? It's just so seriously stupid! I knew this when I picked up the book to read, but I thought somehow this would be woven in beautifully and have some meaning to the story. It doesn't. It's just insulting to the reader.And on a side note - The word "high-tops" is repeated in this book like a million times. This author must have a high-top obsession, because all the characters wear high-tops. No one just wears "shoes" or "sneakers" or "tennis shoes". This author either has a very poor vocab and can't come up with another word for shoes, or he's nuts about high-tops. And the only food anyone seems to eat is canned peas. I'm pretty sure no one likes canned peas, especially not kids. This is the food that the boys bring to the grandfathers they are trying to hide. No one can survive on canned peas for months!Major gripe - I don't play an instrument and am not educated on the terms of playing music and so I didn't understand what was up with all the music terms (forte - play loudly, piano - play softly, da capo - return to the beginning, mezzo-forte, glissando, etc) that were printed under ALL the verbs in this book. If you pick the book up and flip to any page you will see these music terms (very small print) under all of the verbs ("said", "laughing", "knocking", "clattering", "humming", ect.) It is the most annoying thing I've ever seen done in a book. My friend plays 7 instruments and when I showed her this book, even she thought it was stupid. I can't believe the author would expect kids to read each and every music term as they're reading the story. I just ignored them all, but it was super hard.

By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: Nicholas has had several difficulties in his life. His younger brother died, his father lost his job, and now they must sell their house. Nicholas does not want to leave his house because his baby brother was buried in the backyard under a large tree. He believes the tree to be the spirit of his brother. His grandfather has shown up after getting out of prison. But not all is well with his grandfather who is failing from dementia. At school, Nicholas is a genius, excelling at math and violin, but has no friends. He spends every day eating his lunch in the bathroom by himself. His grandfather claims to have hidden a trunk of heirlooms. If Nicholas helps him find them, he would have money to keep the house. Through many crazy events, Nicholas teams up with two other misfits for school as well as one of their grandfathers to find the treasure. Through the hunt, he gets to know his grandfather as well as himself.THE GOOD: There are parts to the hunt that are quite interesting and keep you riveted. I desperately wanted to get to the end to see what was in the trunk.THE NOT AS GOOD: Where to begin? First, the writing of the story is poor. The sentences are choppy and the description is extremely weak. The author uses the same descriptive words over and over and over again. Then there is the issue of the author's use of musical and mathematical words throughout the entire story. This is overdone to the nth degree. When a person is speaking, the author uses forte or piano in parentheses throughout the book. This is extremely distracting. Often, throughout the book, Nicholas will stop to explain a musical term and how it must explain the mood of the moment. A couple of these might have worked, but there were far too many. During the dialogue, instead of making it a natural part of the action going on, the author uses "he said" and "she said" for every single piece of dialogue! This brought me to annoyance within the first chapter.Almost every single character was unlikeable. They were bullies, thieves, criminals, snobbish, or just plain weird. There is a fine line between quirky and weird. Baker crossed over this line several times. Nicholas has a very strange belief that his brother is the tree in the backyard. He plays his violin as a way to communicate to the tree, and Nicholas believes the tree speaks back to him. Jordan is mean to people because he believes he will become his abusive father. Tragedy was overdone excessively. Everyone had a major sob story which was used to excuse their bad behavior. The book was full of extremely unrealistic bad behavior such as daily stealing and bullying. Plot twists were strange, random, and unrealistic. The bullies never receive what they deserve. Everyone just shrugs off their bad behavior. And I was highly disturbed by the fact that Nichoas kept his grandfather in an abandoned house living off of canned fruits and vegetables. The grandfather becomes ill because of this. The ending is such a complete let down that I was mad at myself for completing the book to get to the ending.AGE RECOMMENDATION: This book is advertized for ages 8-12 which is completely inappropriate for the maturity of the story for the following content:A dead baby buried in the backyard, bullying (lots), stealing(lots), a seance complete with a pentagram, dead bodies being dumped by gangsters and descriptions of the condition of the bodies, gangs, death, fighting, and discussions about abortion, euthanasia, war, and violence.This book should not be read read by anyone below middle school age.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Book is an Heirloom By R. Wetzel This is a great book. I got it for my son, but ended up reading the whole thing myself. It's for sure more "literary" than many of the books published for kids and some of the themes reflect real life in ways that are best suited to an older tween and not a 4th grader. So, while I loved this book, my son, now 9, won't be reading it for awhile. But I hope he'll be the kind of kid who will truly understand it, when he's old enough to comprehend it.The prose is lovely and the story intrguing. The characters are diverse and real. You come to love and understand them, even the ones with more glaring faults. The treasure is the journey and reading this book was a bit of golden time.

The illustrations are delightful and so animated and colorful that the book comes to life for the toddler generation. This book compliments the song beautifully. This is a good way to bring the music of Bob Marley's to a new generation. The young toddler set can't help but sing the verse over and over. Don't worry about a thing cause every little thing is gonna be alright. This is a message for you cause everything gonna be alright. It's a little hard to read if you're familiar with the song! You tend to want to read it. I also love that the characters are diverse and that the main family in the book is very different from the types of families my kids see daily in our small East Texas town.It was a great opening to introduce my kids to the music of Bob Marley. We read the book and then had a reggae dance party in their room!

The death of a child brings emotions that are difficult to handle and difficult to fully explain to others. Patrick Misener shares from his heart and gives insights into his journey through the trauma his family faced. His memories of key people that crossed his path during the 38 days when his daughter was hospitalized record the breadth of emotions his family faced. And during those days the impact of people on his life was felt but not expressed to them. Now he has taken the opportunity to share how he and his family were helped through those difficult days and no longer has to say, ". . .but I could not."

A fast read full of the raw emotion that surrounds the life altering event of his young daughter dying. Patrick clearly articulates the need to draw boundaries and also the need for friends to cross boundaries when love demands it. Definitely a Christian spiritual book...but regardless of faith, it echos the raw hurt of a human soul in the dark journey of the death of a child.

By Karen This is an honest look into the heart and soul of a man who trusts God's love so deeply that he can allow us, the readers, to feel his intense thoughts and emotions during an horrific shock to his family. Thank you, Pastor Pat, for opening your heart so as to encourage us who have also had unexpected shocking losses.
