About the Author Maurice Pledger is an internationally-acclaimed artist known for his realistic and detailed illustrations of animals and wildlife. He's had no formal art training, but achieves the realism and detail in his beautiful artwork by spending hours in the field observing, sketching, and studying his subjects in their natural environment. First published at age 17, he has since had his illustrations featured on greeting cards, prints, gifts, and books. He has created several successful series, including Sounds of the Wild, Peek-and-Find, Nature Trails, and Pledger Sticker Books. He was the recipient of the 1992 Francis Williams Illustration Award for the Best Descriptive Illustration. This honor is given only once every 5 years by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Colorful and Bright, A Look Beneath the Sea By The Invisible Pam My entire family is pretty animal crazy and this boardbook from Maurice Pledger would have found shelf space in any of my siblings homes.THE STORY: Dottie Dolphin is swimming around the reef looking for her siblings. You don't know exactly who she is looking for until the first tab is pulled down. And all sorts of beautiful reef creatures like a Lionfish and turtle give her clues or tell her that they aren't dolphins.WHAT I LOVE about this book are the brilliant colors and all the animals and objects that there are to point-at and name. There are sponges, seaweed, and coral, to name just a small number of objects. As for animals there are seahorses, the lionfish, turtles, a giant clam, seagulls, frigate birds, and a clownfish and so much more. In fact, I don't know the names of all the critters.CONSTRUCTION-- The pages and cover and sturdy.-- The front cover has a patch of silky, but textured, fabric where little ones will be able to 'pet' Dottie Dolphin.-- Not every page has a pull-down tab. There are four in total. Plus the last page has fold out which makes it 3 panels wide.-- The tabs are not the thick cardboard kind, but the heavily plasticized sort. In fact, all of the pages are very shiny and I would think be water resistant.This would be an excellent book to share with little ones after they are past the 'animal basics'. (You know, once they know dog/cat/horse/chicken). Children who have seen the Nemo movie will like finding the clownfish. And Adults will be able to point at the animals and help children exercise their memories. And in time you could even practice counting.~WHAT I REALLY THINK:::Honestly, I've just reviewed two of these boardbooks by Maurice Pledger and I really really like them. The colors are rich and artwork is excellent.The story in this book should appeal to children, and... well, flaps. Everyone likes flaps, don't they? But what gets 5 STARS from me is a book that had more than one virtue. And this book and the Ping-Ping Panda boadbook have a lot more going for them than flaps and story. You can use the books to teach colors, and to count. And there are plenty of animals to point-at and name.These things allow a book to be used for a longer length of time and not just at one developmental stage.Disclosure: review copy
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful! By Heidi Grange Dottie Dolphin is a beautiful book with fun flaps to uncover throughout the book. The story follows Dottie Dolphin as she searches for her siblings throughout the ocean. The illustrations are gorgeous with all sorts of bright colorful sea creatures lighting up the pages. The writing is also really good which is impressive for a board book. This is a board book that any young reader can appreciate, not only for it's beauty but for the information it presents about life under the sea and the creatures that live there. Highly recommended.

Dottie the dolphin goes on trip to find her brothers and sister during a game of hide-and-seek. During her search she come across a lot of underwater animals that help lead her back to her family. With beautiful illustration and a sweet story this book is one all small kids will love, I know I did...5 stars(PS I will also be using this book in my class Art Through Stories)
