(snarky snark) By Midwest Man I bought it, because I recently had a lot of luck with another verbal-based magick system. I thought I could use this in the same vein. It is a Mantra-style approach to magick. You are supposed to repeat the mantras until 1) the effect you are looking for occurs, 2) you "feel" as if you should stop, or 3) you get bored.There are no sigils to look at. About 3/4 through the book, he does give "an offering to the gods for the use of their powers (to be done BEFORE any work is cast). No attunements. Just the phrases.What you get: A SHORT BOOK. Like Egypt itself, the pre-mantra content is mostly sand. The first 60% of the book is introductory musings. The last 40% of the book is a list of purposes, and each purpose's English-phonetic mantra phrase.Some of the 150+ mantra purposes he gives that I thought might be useful:*Drain the Ka Essence of an Attacker*Bind a hostile spell/hostile magic rite*General protection*Protect certain countries from terrorism/invasion*Job protection*Acquiring amulets/talismans*Learning martial arts*Immediate protection*Seize an adversary's powers*Bless the cursed*Becoming invisible/translucent to an adversary*Cause an adversary to experience medical problems*To resurrect/resuscitate a newly dead person from heart attackYet, here in the midwest USA, magickal OR mundane attack is fairly unlikely, as long as one doesn't go looking for that trouble. If one DOES go looking for these occasions, no matter where you are on the planet, then one would probably fare better to have a Concealed/Carry license, and pack some heat, than to try to utter a mantra before one's adversary pulls his trigger.Also, CPR and the mudra for it seem to work a majority of the time. Better to learn those. But if you are an on-looker, or have just traded off CPR with someone else, you could say this Mantra and it could work; who knows?Also, one of the words in several of the phrases is actually spelled "M7". That's right: M and the number 7. I figure, it could be a typo that occurs eight times. "7" could be Y or U. I'm betting M7 is probably MU, because Y does not occur except when calling nepthys and hapy, and each of those only happen once in the entire 150+ mantras.Another typo is H3. That's right: H and the number 3. Typo? I'm guessing HE. It only occurs once, if you want to get $10,000.BUT: there are nuggets in the sand. Actual nuggets, not glittery sand-sized pieces of nice-to-know info. I had not considered some of the aspects of Egyptian thought that Michael Horus shared. He goes into depth about time-release magick. So, perhaps these phrases could be woven into the construction of talismans or amulets, as a one-off rip-cord parachute deal, or maybe attuned and actuated by a Call Wyrd. But he gave no instructions for these, or even hints. This was something I thought of doing, which is why I didn't ask for my money back.SO: 5 stars for insight and volume of mantras. Minus one for typos. Minus another half star for no instructions on how to use the time-release idea. 3.5 stars rounds up to 4, I guess.
