From School Library Journal Gr 3–5—Kelsey Case wants to be a detective. She has a spy backpack full of supplies and she's read Harriet the Spy. Now all she needs is a case. When Kelsey, Becca Morales, and Leo Polansky discover newborn kittens stuffed into a trash can, she knows she's found her mystery and maybe even a new best friend. The trio quickly hide the kittens in an old shed and form the Curious Cat Spy Club to find out who dumped the kittens and why. With red herrings, lots of twists and turns, and adventure, this caper is sure to keep kids entertained. VERDICT A fun mystery series that's a sure bet for animal lovers, recommended to fans of Jane O'Connor's "Nancy Clancy, Super Sleuth" series (HarperCollins) who are ready for something a bit longer and ever-so-slightly darker.—Terry Ann Lawler, Burton Barr Library, Phoenix, AZ
Review "A fun mystery series that's a sure bet for animal lovers." School Library Journal, March 1, 2015"This first book in a new series is definitely for the animal-lover, and the Scooby-Doo vibe makes it a perfect fit for the budding mystery fan. Young readers will enjoy following the clues along with Kelsey as she learns about friendship and animals." Booklist Online, January 30, 2015"This enjoyable mystery has a satisfying ending and a neatly calibrated level of suspense for middle school readers." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2015"There's plenty of action in this series opener, but Singleton also handles the emotional layers well. Pet lovers will enjoy the animal-centric focus, and the mystery will keep them guessing." Publishers Weekly, January 5, 2015

What is a Zorse?...and More By Amazon Customer I have read every book that this author wrote and have been eagerly awaiting this first book in a new series. I am not disappointed! I love the elements of the book- a zorse, which I've never heard of, a mystery, and the melding of three very different kids into a club with a purpose. The characters are well-defined and capture the reader with their individuality.Three unlikely middle school kids come together and become friends over their common desire to save some kittens found in a dumpster. Becca Morales is the popular girl in school who hangs out with the "in" girls called the Sparklers. Kelsey Case is a basically a shy girl with a desire to solve mysteries. Even more than that, though, she wants friends. And finally, Leo Polansky is a geeky kid who spends all of his time inventing things. Together they form the Curious Cat Spy Club. Who threw three tiny kittens into a dumpster? Why are pets all around town disappearing only to be returned when a reward is offered? The kids investigate this while working out their personality differences. My granddaughter is going to love this book! What kid wouldn't with the elements of animal rescue, mystery, and friendship? I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book. I want to find out more about the zorse!

For Nancy Drew fans By Janet Hamilton Summary: When Kelsey helps stop a runaway zorse (which, as you know, is a cross between a horse and a zebra), she gets more than she bargained for. The zorse belongs to Becca, one of the most popular girls in school. Ducking into an alley to avoid a boy from school, the two girls discover a bag of kittens in a dumpster. A third member, Leo, gets involved in the rescue, and the unlikely trio decide to form a club to protect the kittens until they can find them homes. Kelsey has always dreamed of being a detective, and now she has a real mystery on her hands…who put the kittens in the dumpster? As the Curious Cat Spy Club works to solve it, they uncover a whole pet-napping ring right in their neighborhood. Recommended for grades 4-6.Pros: This well-paced mystery will keep readers guessing right up to the end. In Nancy Drew-like fashion, the last few chapters involve an exciting run-in with the villain and more than one narrow escape. There are interesting subplots that give the characters more depth, such as Kelsey’s and Leo’s family issues and Becca’s thwarted romance.Cons: Kelsey didn’t get to keep her kitten. But the cover says this is an exciting new mystery series, so there may yet be hope.

By Dad of Divas I had never read any of Linda Joy Singleton's works in the past but after reading this I can see why so many people online so many positive things. This was very well written, with great characters and a plot that engages and intrigues you. With a bit of fantasy with reality you have fun with the story as you are reading it, and I found that I did not want to put the book down.I read this with my oldest daughter who is ten and she absolutely loved it. As a parent, I love finding stories that have characters that my daughters can relate to that are written in an age-appropriate way and the author definitely delivered in that regard. I would say that though I read this with my 10 year old, I would bet that my six year old would also love this too, especially with all of the animals that are in the book itself.All-in-all this was a great book for the whole family with strong female characters and a writing style that will keep you from beginning to end!*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*
