Her biggest solace is her new horse, Sandy, and the two spend their days together. When Crystal is introduced to Breanna, another 11-year-old girl who lives on the neighboring property, she is thrilled to discover that Breanna is an avid rider and horse enthusiast. The girls become fast friends and set about exploring the extensive property. It isn't long before they discover a world of underground caverns filled with enormous fruit trees as well as a house secreted on the property. When Joe, Blackridge Farm's handyman, confides in Crystal about a family crisis, she is determined to help him and the adventure takes on an air of suspense. This gentle read is the product of a bedtime story created by Dave Bettinger for his stepdaughter, Barbara, along with illustrations by 17-year-old Christina Fletcher. While there were many promising avenues in this mystery, the plot fails to gel and has several loose ends. Bordering on fantasy but never crossing the line, the conclusion of the tale falls flat. From the Author Crystal and Breanna: The Secret of Blackridge Farm, was born in 2006 when then eight-year-old, second-grader Barbara asked her stepdad to tell her a bedtime story. "Once upon a time..." he began, "there was a girl named... what should her name be?" "Crystal!" Barbara answered, pointing to her new American Girl® doll. "There was a girl named Crystal. And she was... how old?" "Eleven!" Barbara responded. After four nights of building the story with Barbara's promptings, the two decided they should begin writing it down to preserve it. The Secret of Blackridge Farm is the result of those bedtime stories, unfolding night after night for roughly three months. Barbara decided what types of girls Crystal and Breanna should be: what ages, hair color, personalities, etc., they should have, and that they should own horses; while Dave provided many of the scenarios in which the girls would find themselves. The beauty that Barbara found, and that her eleven-year-old sister, Alexi, now finds in the story of Crystal and Breanna, is simple: It could all be real! Two ordinary girls, in slightly extraordinary circumstances, learn about life, responsibility, and caring for others while embarked upon a fantastic journey together.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A nice bedtime fantasy By S. G. Fortosis What's wrong with turning a series of bedtime stories into a novel for kids? Nothing at all. In fact, it is a fun way to unleash imaginatively what your kids have begged for every night before lights out. This author has quite a creative mind and she fashions a world that is truly unique--the type of world that many kids wish they could find someday. Enjoy this for light reading--read it to your own kids!

There is plenty of intrigue, with secret places, discoveries, and subtle lessons to be learned. I also love the way Barbara and Dave slipped in integrity, and care of the animals. I am looking forward to reading the next installment!
