2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is SO clever! By D. Jennings Martin McKenna's first picture book, and we hope it's the first of many! The story is of a little boy named Edgar who receives an octopus for a pet when he wanted a puppy. He's disappointed when Jarvis the octopus doesn't behave like a puppy but eventually learns to appreciate his unique qualities...(Edgar says "play dead!" and Jarvis appears dressed as a mummy....wonderful!) All the humor is in the illustrations which are absolutely priceless....even the endpapers. ESPECIALLY the endpapers....must include a photo or two, hope it's not a spoiler for anyone....octopus as HAMLET! As ELVIS! And look at the underground scene in the lower left corner...escaped convict! Plenty for both the kids and the parents to appreciate here. And yes, there is a lesson, but not a beat-you-over-the-head-with-it Teachable Moment sort of thing...... The Octopuppy is just great fun.

Delightful Decompression By susan mcallister We read this book to our grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbor kids - anyone, just so we can spend time with Octopuppy's illustrations! They are so imaginative and sparkling. We love the colors, the attention to details, the candidness. As importantly, the story of Edgar is precious - one of the significance of friendship; the importance of its permanence; and the need for working to keep it intact. Such an important message in today's seemingly impermanent world, especially for children. This book has resonated with every child we've read it to, including adult children! We're hoping that McKenna will create further loving stories and creative art. Thanks!

For me, this unique children’s book contains important reflections about appreciating and enjoying what one has. It also encourages the reader to be mindful to those close by, whose feelings can often be forgotten, while welcoming and celebrating the wonderful variety of characters we have in the world, and all that they have to offer. A humourous, heartwarming tale. We would love to see more of Octopuppy.
