Disasters strike in many different forms. Thirteen year old AJ Devlin believes she has a great life with a good family, two BFFs, a love for cheerleading, and a Champion Quarter Horse mare. When a new girl arrives in town, AJ thinks nothing of it. It’s only when her best friends, Julie and Jaime, begin ignoring her that she wonders why Celine is insinuating herself into AJ’s life. As her life begins to fall apart in many different directions, she realizes that the “new girl” is intent upon destroying everything AJ holds dear. Yet, when her almost-boyfriend finds incriminating evidence against Celine, revealing that this girl is not who or what she claims to be, AJ refuses to allow him to disclose it. Before AJ can settle the score with Celine, she must confront the unexpected divorce of her parents and her now unstable relationship with her father; navigate a new and shaky friendship with one of her former BFFs, and learn to cope with a devastating tragedy that comes out of nowhere.

The years when one day you have a best friend, the next day your best friend has a different best friend. These are the years of confusion, when every event in your life is a major catastrophe. The years you want to forget.Author Mikki Sadil’s MG/Tween e-novel, CHEERS, CHOCOLATE, AND OTHER DISASTERS, is a great example of the meaning of true friendship. Alyson Joanne, aka AJ and her best friends, Julie and Jaime, plan to try out for the cheerleading squad. Enter the new girl in school, Celine, and AJ’s once best friends are now Celine’s best friends, and they’ll try out together, leaving AJ on the team with losers Amberley and Lisa. Not only has AJ lost her best friends, her parents are getting a divorce, and her mare that she loves dearly comes down with the colic. That’s a lot for a girl to deal with. The author has developed her characters realistically as AJ and the other girls struggle with the meaning of true friendship, their own identities, and the fact that some things in life are more important than cheerleading. As I read CHEERS, CHOCOLATE, AND OTHER DISASTERS, my thoughts went back to my middle grade years, the insecurities, the need for friends, and the disappointments when we didn’t make cheerleader or majorette or whatever else we wanted to be. Ms. Sadil’s story is about discovering what’s really important in life and understanding that things do not always turn out the way one hopes. This e-book would make a great addition to middle-school libraries and classrooms as well as your town library. And don’t forget your personal library.

I just finished Mikki Sadil's Tween/MG novel, Cheers, Chocolate, and Other Disasters and I absolutely loved this well-crafted story. The message of the book is about bullying and it conveys that well, but the story-line or I should say story-lines were exciting and kept my interest from start to finish. I had read Ms. Sadil's, The Freedom Thief which was excellent and so I assumed Cheers would be as well and I wasn't disappointed.AJ, the protagonist is a thirteen year old girl who has many insecurities that she has to deal with: friendship, bullying, death, divorce. A lot for a person that age. Ms. Sadil weaves all of these into a suspenseful adventure that pulls the reader into this compelling story and keeps them wanting to come back for more. And Ms. Sadil does not candy-coat real life experiences in either of her books.I hope there is a sequel to this book. I definitely would love to read it.

Her Middle Grade book, “Cheers, Chocolate, and Other Disasters” captures the attention early and never lets the reader go.Alyson Joanne (AJ) Devlin is the kind of main character you want to spank one minute and cheer on the next. She’s spunky but sensitive, and her world has toppled into a morass of circumstances that threaten to put too great a strain on her young shoulders.Sadil’s portrayal is made more powerful by the intensity with which she draws her characters. Even minor characters are given a roundness not seen in many books for young readers. The reader can’t help but wonder if some of these personalities are plucked from flesh and blood examples. It’s not often that an adult can get sucked into the world of middle school students and their personal dramas. It’s also not common when at the end of such a book the adult reader is looking for more of the story. This reader went looking for more. I wanted to know how she fared with her new boyfriend, the fate of her nemesis Celine Carroll, and her new friends and cheerleading partners.I wanted it all. Not that the book ended in the wrong place or with threads left untied. Au contraire, all threads were tied into bows, but I wanted more. I wasn’t done with the story yet. This amazingly fast read rarely paused for deep breaths. Mikki Sadil has a major winner on her hands with this one. I can honestly give it a Brava! Now, the big question. Will there be a sequel? Will AJ make reappearance with new adventures? I don’t have answers. As a reader, I’m gratified to know that Sadil’s first book, “Freedom’s Thief,” won’t stand alone as an excellent example of this writer’s talent. If you haven’t read “Freedom’s Thief” yet, pick up a copy. The same thoroughness of detail, both material and emotional, brings the Civil War and slavery's issues to the forefront and breathes life into them for young readers on a level they can understand.
