What is a family? Once, it was said to be a father, mother, boy, girl, cat and dog living in a house with a garden. But as times have changed, families have changed too, and now there are almost as many kinds of families as colours of the rainbow - from a mum and dad or single parent to two mums or two dads, from a mixed-race family to children with different mums and dads, from families with a disabled member to those with a mum or dad in prison. Mary Hoffman takes a look through children's eyes at the wide varieties of family life: from homes, food, ways of celebrating, schools and holidays to getting around, jobs and housework, from extended families, languages and hobbies to pets and family trees - and she concludes that, for most people, their own family is the best one of all! With Ros Asquith's delightful pictures, this book takes a fresh, optimistic look at families of today.

You'll see families of every type--and not are ridiculed. It talks about kids who live with moms and dads, or just one parent...or grandparents... or two mommies or two daddies....or adopted and foster families. Talks about kids who go to school, kids who homeschool. Kids who live in all different types of places--including homeless families. Big families and really small families ("You can be a family with just two people.") Book features a lot of different ethnicities--and even includes a Muslim family in traditional clothes. Talks about a wide variety of holidays people celebrate including diwali, eid, etc. (Doesn't go in depth, but does mention them.) Also talks about people having different circumstances...in some families both parents work, other families nobody works, etc.I know that there are those who are very conservative might not like the mention of same sex families--but that is the reality of the world we live in. The kids in those families didn't choose their parents or their parents' sexuality--and the too should be able to feel that their family is fine. Wouldn't you rather your child be the one who is kind to the kid whose family might not fit the norm rather than the one who is known as the bully? And let's be honest, reading about a two mommy family isn't going to cause your daughter to become a lesbian--anymore than liking to watch Glee will turn your son gay. It's one half of one page...skip it if you must, but don't skip this book. It's wonderful.

I'm finally buying this book because I just can't check it out of the library one more time without feeling tremendously guilty for taking it....again!This is a fun and fabulous book meant to teach children about diversity and tolerance. The illustrations are engaging, with so much to look at and laugh at. My 3 year old son and I can spend 15 minutes on just one page, there is so much to explore and talk about. He is still too young to grasp the controversial aspect of some of the families included in the book (fueling many of the ridiculously bigoted reviews I have just read) but I know that being exposed to all the possible ways a family can look and "be" will only help him to be a beautiful, accepting, open minded individual as he grows...hopefully into a wise & compassionate soul who will be able to stand up for his own right and the rights of ALL people to live as they choose when LOVE is the driving force.

A wide variety of families are shown, and the book covers a lot of ground in how families live -- who is part of the family, what family members do, and where families live. We have a two-mom family and we love this book, and are buying it for our kids' school.
