I enjoyed the writing I enjoyed reading everything inthe character's voices, imagining the battle scenes. The writing itself was a bit bland. But I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What made me very angry was that they left out bits and pieces. As I got further in the book I started to wonder,Wait, wasn't Olympus Coliseum after wonderland? Where's Cloud and Hercules? Then of course they skipped Atlantica and Halloween town.I guess they didn't think it would make that much of a difference because they were just "filler worlds"But what's going to happen when they write a book about Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories? They're not going to include Atlantic or Halloween Town or Olympus Coliseum because they aren't in Sora's memories because he never went! What about Kingdom Hearts II? I can just imagine it "Hey Jack! Hi Ariel! Hi Herc! Oh wait I don't actually know any of you!"What about Cloud? Sora doesn't know Cloud! Oh my god.Okay aside from all of that. I really love how they portrayed Sora in this book.I love how he's happy and goofy. I love how he loves Donald and Goofy, but he never forgets about Riku and Kairi. He's still loyal to them even as he forms his relationships with all the new friends he makes. He reflects on them in almost every situation. He's the teenage goofball we all expected him to be. He eats a ton. I love his character. This was a really good book overall and if they hadn't have forgotten those worlds I would have loved it. This is a must have for any Kingdom Hearts fan. But if you're looking for a more accurate representation I suggest you read the manga.

An Excellent Adaptation of an Excellent Video-game By David Hilliard This is a great adaptation of the first KH game and a welcome addition to my bookshelf. The translation by Melissa Tanaka is well done and effective in telling the story, and the illustrations by Shiro Amano are gorgeous. Keep in mind that this is an adaptation, and so things have been cut and put in accordingly. For example, Ursula, Hades, and Oogie-boogie, along with their respective worlds, have been omitted from the story. This leaves only Maleficent, Jafar, and Captain Hook as villains (excluding Ansem, Seeker of Darkness) , which is disappointing, but understandable. Atlantica, Olympus Coliseum, and Halloween Town, while fun, were not essential in telling the story of Kingdom Hearts. One addition is the encounter with Xemnas in Hollow Bastion (a scene from the Final Mix version of the game) which is a great teaser of what is to come for Sora and his friends. This is not the best way to get into the franchise (I'd start by getting the HD collections of the games on the PS3), but as a person with a passion for both reading and gaming I really grew to love this book. I plan on getting all the English translations of the novels as they release them. If you're a fan of Square, Kingdom Hearts or Disney, try this book. You'll be glad you did!

There are a couple things from the game that aren't included (such as Halloween town) and a few minor differences in some scenes, but all the key plot elements are in place. The writing is a little lackluster at times, but that's probably just be because it wasn't originally written in English. There are a few cute extra scenes and I loved having some additional inner monologues and interactions between the characters. Shiro Amano's illustrations inside are gorgeous; I wish there had been a few more of them! Adorable book, can't wait to see some other KH novels in English.
