1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The book's voice said, "I'm here to enlighten you about a dreaded subject that most people ignore: Protection Under the Law." By Hope Hankerson My friends, the book didnot lie, because I soon found myself lost in the enlightenment of the struggles of a single Mom of two (Ms. Dey herself)trying to make her way through legal jargon in her everyday life, while being bombarded by life telling her in so many frightening ways that she was a failure. Because what is probably most frightening for a Mother, and able to bring psyche to its lowest level, is perceiving that she is not protecting her children.Ms. Dey, aiming to remain a good Mom even after death, presents the worthiness of writing a will with advice on how to do so by covering simple questions like "Do I need a lawyer to write a will?" to "How will the process unfold of my writing a will transfer into my former assets coming into the hands of my children after my death?"Aurorah Dey did not set out to put her children, or herself for that matter, in jeopardy. But she did, and she did it the way most us do--by being ignorant of the laws, the apparent and the obscure, of our American land. Ms. Dey learned the hard way that she must protect her loved one's by mixing the ingredients of love, which is intangible, with the concrete protection of American laws until it is a smooth blend of true life; that is, we should strive to be spiritually free to love AND protect ourselves against poverty, hunger, homelessness simultaneously.I believe Ms. Dey's book is most successful because she does not write down to those not in her main audience of single Mom's. Her writing welcomes diverse readership. Each of us, parent or childless, are afforded a sound lesson that teaches us that there is, indeed, protection under the law--we just have to be willing to believe that we need and deserve said protection.

Geometric nets provide many hours of fascinating fun! Each net represents the surface of a unique geometric shape. Some of the shapes were described as much as 2500 years ago.

A geometric net is a flat drawing that can be cut and folded into a three dimensional figure. For example, six identical squares can be made into a cube. This is because a cube has six sides, all of which are identical squares. Each of the drawings in this book can be cut and folded into a three dimensional geometric object.

This book contains 80 geometric nets:

Geometric Nets Project Book: Geometric Nets to Cut Out and Construct (Math Books for Children), by David E. McAdams

From the Author I remember as a child coming across a few geometric nets. I was fascinated at how they folded together into complete three-dimensional shapes. I spent several hours putting the few I was able to find together and treasured the results. In early 2006, I looked for resources for geometric nets online. I found little. Since then a few websites feature geometric nets, but I found no comprehensive source. So, I gathered together my resources and started drawing, testing and publishing geometric nets. This book contains 81 geometric nets for children of all ages to enjoy.

From the Inside Flap What is a geometric net?A geometric net is a flat drawing that can be folded into a three dimensional figure. For example, six identical squares can be made into a cube. This is because a cube has six sides, all of which are identical squares. Each of the drawings in this book can be folded into a three dimensional geometric object. Most geometric nets fold into solids with flat sides. There are a few exceptions. A cylinder can be made from a rectangle and two circles. A cone can be made from a circle and a triangle with a curved bottom.

About the Author As a professional math teacher, Mr. McAdams quickly realized that affordable tools for math literacy were sadly deficient. Committed to improving the math learning environment, he has spent many years developing math literacy tools such as this project book. This project book allows teachers and parents to copy geometric nets for their students to print and build.

He was having so much fun I decided to join in and made one. it was very fun and not too difficult. My younger kids (6, 5) can make some of the simpler shapes. My son now wants to study shapes and see if he can figure out how to make some on his own. This is a great support to our homeschool curriculum!

Dr. Corbett, Bishop of Oxford and Norwich, lamented long ago the departure of the English fairies. "In Queen Mary's time" he wrote—"When Tom came home from labour,Or Cis to milking rose,Then merrily, merrily went their tabor,And merrily went their toes."But now, in the times of James, they had all gone, for "they were of the old profession," and "their songs were Ave Maries." In Ireland they are still extant, giving gifts to the kindly, and plaguing the surly. "Have you ever seen a fairy or such like?" I asked an old man in County Sligo. "Amn't I annoyed with them," was the answer. "Do the fishermen along here know anything of the mermaids?" I asked a woman of a village in County Dublin. "Indeed, they don't like to see them at all," she answered, "for they always bring bad weather." "Here is a man who believes in ghosts," said a foreign sea-captain, pointing to a pilot of my acquaintance. "In every house over there," said the pilot, pointing to his native village of Rosses, "there are several." Certainly that now old and much respected dogmatist, the Spirit of the Age, has in no manner made his voice heard down there.

You have the feeling that this collection is a part of the deep well that Yeats' created his earlier 'Celtic Twilight' poetry from. These stories are faery tales, but there is an element of realism to them for, as you read, you doubt not the truth of the tales, and immediately want to escape to Ireland and dance on the hills with the fey folk. Read this in the winter by the fire with a copy of Yeats' early poetry and prepare for a twilight wandering amongst shadowy woods, quiet country roads and green green hills. This is one of those books which you hold up to your heart upon completion, and sigh deeply from the experience of reading it - more of a journey than the act of turning pages and interpreting words...

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating look at the tradition of folklore in Ireland. By Monika In this delightful volume, first published in 1892, William Butler Yeats has collected all manner of Irish folklore (mostly short stories, with a few poems) from a wide variety sources. He has divided the works into categories as follows: the "Trooping Fairies" (fairies, changelings, and the "merrow" or mermaids); the "Solitary Fairies" (the lepracaun, the pooka - an animal spirit, and the banshee); "Ghosts"; "Witches & Fairy Doctors"; "T'yeer-na-n-Oge" or "Tir-na-n-Og" (a legendary island said to appear and disappear); "Saints & Priests"; "The Devil"; "Giants"; and "Kings / Queens / Princesses / Earls / Robbers." Yeats introduces each section with background information on the creature the stories in that category will concern. He also includes numerous footnotes of interest, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn about the tradition of Irish folklore. While I have given this anthology a five-star rating based on it's value as a source of information on Irish mythology, it would probably be worth only four stars for entertainment value alone. Some of the stories are very short and/or don't have much of a point, and are less interesting. These tend to serve more as testimony to the nature of a particular mythical being rather than being an actual story with a plot and message for the reader. Nevertheless, the book as a whole offers a very comprehensive look at just what defines Irish folk culture. The stories that do have a point sometimes take the form of "how things came to be this way" tales, or provide a moral lesson, etc. Many of the stories are rather dark, as that tends to be the nature of lore from this region, but there are also some lighthearted and cheerful pieces.Despite the book having been compiled more than one hundred years ago, most of the stories are quite easy to read. Yeats makes things even more simple for the reader by making footnotes where old Irish words or phrases are used, giving us their meaning. However, there are a few stories that have been left in a more archaic form, which is distracting and a bit harder to decipher. Take, for example, the following excerpt:". . . the minit he puts his knife into the fish, there was a murtherin' screech, that you'd the life id lave you if you hurd it, and away jumps the throut out av the fryin'-pan into the middle o' the flure; and an the spot where it fell, up riz a lovely lady - the beautifullest crathur that eyes ever seen, dressed in white, and a band o' goold in her hair, and a sthrame o' blood runnin' down her arm."One of the things I enjoy most about literature is finding connections with other works I've read, and "Irish Fairy & Folk Tales" does not disappoint in this regard. Many of the pieces are derivations of other, more common fairy tales. For instance, "Smallhead and the King's Sons" (Ghosts) incorporates some elements from both "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel," while "The Giant's Stairs" (Giants) has some similarities to the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." There are more connections like this. On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable, and also a valuable read from a literary / academic standpoint. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interesting in the history of Irish culture, the study of fairy tales and folklore, or both.

All sorts of creatures and strange happenings are described, and a good number of the stories are told in the dialect of the person who the story was gotten from (Yeats & his friends traveled around Ireland collecting stories from the people they met - recording the oral traditions, if you will.)

By The Wingchair Critic 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is Baum's most fluid, well rounded, and detailed children's novel.Recognizing the increasing danger from lands beyond, at the end of 1910's 'The Emerald City Of Oz,' child ruler Ozma and sorceress Glinda decided to magically close Oz off from the outside world forever. In reality, Baum was tired of Oz and wanted to develop other ideas and projects. But hounded by young fans to provide more stories of the utopist fairyland, in 1913 Baum again took up his pen as Royal Historian.Explaining to readers that he had begun receiving new tales from the Shaggy Man via a wireless telegraph in Oz, the fruit of this partnership was 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz,' probably the general favorite of Baum's novels among dedicated Oz enthusiasts. In fact, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is the book appreciated even by those who dislike the Oz series as a whole. In poetry-spouting Scraps the Patchwork Girl, Baum introduced a vibrant, riveting figure to his fairyland, one equal to earlier classic creations the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Jack Pumpkinhead, the Wooglebug, and the Gnome King.Rowdy, grotesque Scraps was perhaps Baum's last great character; indefatigable and indomitable, Scraps was also Baum's most original and fully realized female character, whether human, fairy, sorceress, or otherwise.A winning combination of common sense and nonsense, Scraps, a kind of nightmare version of Raggedy Ann, is pleasantly naive, utterly free, tactless, curious, and enthusiastic about all facets of life, including romance.Though stuffed with cotton, Scraps finds the straw-packed Scarecrow a perfect dreamboat, and finds twig-bodied Jack Pumpkinhead attractive as well. John R. Neill's illustrations of the Scraps and the Scarecrow's 'hearts aflutter' first meeting is hilarious.A reconfiguration of the happy peasant figure who blissfully notices that the emperor is naked and doesn't hesitate to say so, Scraps, though not an outright trickster figure, approaches trickster status.Unlike some of the other titles in the series that have a predominantly sketchy narrative, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is composed of enthusiastic, rollicking prose that allows the reader to happily suspend disbelief. All Oz titles have filler chapters that pad the books and add little to their forward motion, and the Patchwork Girl Of Oz has its share. However, the filler chapters here--'The Troublesome Phonograph' and 'The Foolish Owl and the Wise Donkey'--don't irritate or distract from the story's forward motion as much as they might.Far from being finished with Oz, in 1913 Baum was still working out the magical laws that would govern his fairyland kingdom; readers will note that those laws applied here differ somewhat from those provided in 1918's 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz.'Most noticeably, young Ojo the Unlucky is described as a growing boy; in the later books, all characters would be permanently fixed in their ages and physical growth or decline would become impossible (which of course raises the question of who each citizen of Oz came into being in the first place).'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is almost free of the occasionally unsettling, cruel, or bizarre elements that Baum unconsciously allowed to mar his books; there is a brief explanation of how "meat" beings, if chopped into pieces, would continue to live, if not thrive, in their newly minced state.Unlike some of the other books in the series, the natural world in 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is lushly underscored and doesn't seem to be a brittle facsimile of the natural world known to readers. There is a loving description of Jack Pumpkinhead's pumpkin patch home, of the Munchkin gardens of "blue flowers, blue cabbages, blue carrots, and blue lettuce," and a defense of country living by the itinerant Shaggy Man.A classic of children's literature, 'The Patchwork Girl Of Oz' is Baum's best, and a far better book than its more famous antecedent, 'The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz.'

Yes this book does describe the origins of Scraps, the patchwork girl, who goes on to become a regular fixture in future Oz stories. However she is, in fact, a secondary character in the story. The main character is Ojo "the unlucky," a Munchkin boy who embarks on a quest to save his beloved uncle who has been accidentally turned into a marble statue. This book offers the usual assortment of pleasantly odd characters, strange magical happenings and dramtic tension that go into all of the good Oz novels. What makes "Patchwork Girl..." stand out is its reltively mature subplot of the importance of rules. Ozma has made it illegal for most people to use magic. The crooked magician ignores this rule, and as an indirect result two innocent people are turned into marble. One of the items Ojo must get for his quest is illegal to gather. He doesn't want to break the law, but restoring his uncle is the most important thing to him, so he justifies it to himself. Then, the reader is introduced to the humane way Oz deals with people who break the rules. This theme will speak volumes to any child who has chaffed under the rules of an adult, but secretly acknowledged that the adult had his or her best interests at heart.Several reviewers have commented that the end of the book is a cop out, and yes it might be disappointing if you were expecting a big, dramatic magical event. In truth, however, it is a masterful conclusion to the rules subplot. The conclusion underscores that rules are made to be kept, and that breaking them and then trying to sneakily get around them only causes problems. If one admits to breaking the rules, as the crooked magician should have done, and then tries to correct the mistake, it often avoids a great deal of trouble and ultimately works out better.Overall, this book is a great read for young and old alike.

Frank Baum's "Oz" series ("Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz", "The Road to Oz" and "The Emerald City of Oz") were all rather lackluster, this book was a return to form. The problem with the other installments was a lack of a new story -- they were all about people who went to Oz, met lots of strange and interesting people, and had a happy ending."The Patchwork Girl of Oz," however, had a very good story to bolster the old Oz formula. Ojo the Unlucky, a young Munchkin lad, along with the Glass Cat and Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, set out to find magical ingredients needed to restore his uncle and a magician's wife to life after they are accidentally petrified. So the story is, again, about someone wandering Oz and meeting strange and interesting people, but giving Ojo a quest gave the book a different angle, a sense of urgency -- this was a boy on a mission to save two lives. The ending is somewhat abrupt, although quite in-character for Baum's creations, but overall it is one of the better Oz books, a real return to form after a few that just didn't click.

She also has a very special surprise in store for her friend and Maisy will need her airplane to deliver it. Toddlers love the books in this series because they are about half the size of a regular board book and they feature Maisy using various modes of transportation (train, tractor, etc.)Easy to handle with bright colors that "pop" and attract the child's attention the illustrations here are bound to please and bring a smile to the face of any preschooler who loves this cute, little white mouse! This book goes to my granddaughter because she loves Maisy!Book supplied by publisher.

I'm not much for memoirs but after I read Matt's blog, with humor right up my alley, I knew I had to give this a read. Matt lays all of his faults out there during his formative Freshman year of college and does so in a way that makes me laugh like few authors can. He does a fantastic job of both celebrating the world of conservative Christianity while having fun with the peculiarities that arise due to it's insular nature. His voice does a great job of bringing you back to those early years of awkwardness, uncertainty, having too much time on your hands, and ideas so stupid they're great.

I love the way he doesn't take his past self too seriously. He does a beautiful job of painting a picture of the scene, and his internal dialogue is perfect. I could relate to much of his college angst and struggles.I felt the prequel to this story (Homeschool Sex Machine) was a bit better. JV Superstar had a few stories that didn't seem to contribute to the overall theme of the memoir. Nonetheless, they still had me giggling. I will look forward to any future works by this author.

I recommend that if you have any experience in homeschooling, Christian fundamentalism, teenage awkwardness, Christian college, or anything like that, read both.

This is an extremely troubling account of how anyone can be convicted of a crime - with or without evidence. Lynne Blanchard has done an amazing and thorough job of sifting through all of the evidence of this case. It's an easy read and very detailed - she manages to break down how the police and DA's office in this case were able to convict someone based on gossipy neighbors. Everyone in America should read this book - it's terrifying.

Lewis Lynne Blanchard did a really good job laying out the details of this case, I was shocked back in 2011 when I watched the trail, and I still can't believe all the lies and false evidence the police, FBI, the prosecutors and the judge got away with. The whole case was based on neighborhood gossip, at least one witness was so visibly nervous on the witness stand, that he should have become a suspect right then and there. Officials should be in jail over what they have done to Brad Cooper and his family, but they are all still around, and so is the real killer of Nancy Cooper. I do NOT recommend going jogging in Cary, NC.I am glad the author took on the task of writing this book, and exposing the truth, while it was obvious during the trial that Brad was being railroaded, after reading this book I realize, it was even worse then I thought.I do hope Lynne will write a book about the Jason Young case, as it went very similar to Brad's, given the gas mileage of his car, and the distances involved, there was no way he could have done this, or would have stopped at the gas station someone said they saw him.

23 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Justice Denied – Wake County North Carolina By Terry Cooper As someone who was present at both the custody hearings in the summer / fall 2008 and the criminal trial in spring 2011, I feel that Lynne Blanchard has done an outstanding job in synthesising the thousands of pages of court documents into a very readable book based on actual facts from the trial or depositions and not suppositions. What is clear as one reads the book is that the Cary police focused on Brad Cooper the very day Nancy Cooper was reported missing. His children were taken from him two days after Nancy’s body was recovered and five days after she was reported missing - long before any evidence collected was even processed and over three months before he was even charged. The early chapters focus on the botched investigation by the Cary police department in which evidence was compromised, sometimes never collected and procedures for chain of custody of evidence completely ignored. There are examples of critical evidence destroyed by police, withheld from Brad’s defense so it could not be challenged in court to prove his innocence (for example IP address for Google map file), and witness statements and police reports that were manipulated and altered to suit their case. Witnesses favourable to the defense were often ignored early in the investigation and possible leads pointing to other suspects never followed up on. Perhaps Howard Cummings, the lead prosecutor, summed it up best when questioning Carol Cooper about the supposed missing ducks, “You realize you just made our witnesses look like a bunch of liars?” It is interesting Howard Cummings and his prosecution team condoned the lies and misrepresentations of their witnesses but this was one telling example where he himself brought this up in front of the jury.As Lynne clearly articulates in her book, this case was never about searching for the truth but rather getting a conviction. The “tunnel vision” was evident from the day Nancy went missing. The police and prosecutors did everything in their power to make “the glove fit” for the indictment and jury even when they knew the evidence was false or misleading. Worse still the judge in this case, Paul Gessner, allowed prejudicial hearsay to dominate the trial so that the jury was unable to really distinguish fact from fiction as the weeks went on. The prosecution team, along with the obvious tacit cooperation of Judge Paul Gessner, denied the defense every opportunity to challenge the evidence presented regarding the map search as will be discussed below. The only piece of evidence the jury convicted Brad Cooper on was his supposed 42 second search of the area Nancy’s body was found one day before she was reported being missing. If the reader focuses on this chapter in Lynne’s book as well as the chapter on the appeal court’s decision to order a new trial one will clearly see to what ends the judicial system (Cary police, Wake County prosecutors, judge Gessner) went to make a conviction.Let’s start with the opening statement by prosecutor Amy Fitzhugh. No mention whatsoever was made about the google map which was the key, and only piece, of evidence supposedly linking Brad to Nancy’s murder. If introduced, as any first year law student knows, it would have laid the foundation for all the prejudicial hearsay that was coming. To the readers it is easy to make the conclusion it was left out because the prosecutors knew the map was placed on Brad Cooper’s laptop while unsecured in Cary police custody and its authenticity could easily be refuted by the defense. It was only introduced once the prosecution team recognized the trial was not going as expected and there was no evidence tying Brad Cooper to Nancy’s murder. The prosecution had to play this card, and with Paul Gessner’s biased cooperation, were able to stymy the defense at every turn.Once the map was introduced, the court denied the defense every opportunity to refute its legitimacy including the processes used for the testing procedures based on “national security”. Expert defense witnesses were denied the ability to testify before the jury. The prosecution was never able to explain the lack of a map search “cookie”, altered files, no browser history for the map search, invalid time stamps, cursor file anomalies, deleted Google watermark and numerous incursions on the laptop while in police custody …. the list goes on. The defense’s expert witnesses (Jay Ward, Giovanni Masucci) were willing to testify the computer was tampered with but Paul Gessner never gave them the opportunity.Criminal defendants have several rights but the most essential protection is the requirement that the prosecution prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. By blocking Howard Kurtz and his defense team from introducing evidence through their expert witnesses Brad Cooper was denied this basic right. In the end, the North Carolina Court of Appeals recognized this travesty of justice and ordered a new trial. The State’s request for a discretionary review by the North Carolina Supreme Court was rejected. The readers may wonder why Brad Cooper took a plea bargain to second degree murder but given what happened after the appeal court ruling he had no choice. As Lynne mentions in the book, the legal counsel Brad was assigned was clearly not prepared to represent him given Brad was facing the very same judge Paul Gessner who was chastised by the appeal court on his rulings. During the 9 month period from the appeal court ruling and to the plea agreement his assigned defense attorney James Freeman, who was not even on the capital public defender’s list, only met with Brad four times, had not finished reading the trial transcript but worse still never informed Brad about the pending plea agreement. Brad found out about the agreement on the prison television and now had only days to make a decision before going before Paul Gessner. Given the options of getting out in 6 years versus going once again in front of Paul Gessner with a possible life sentence in the balance with his assigned legal representation the choice was easy given the time to go to trial (two years or more). Furthermore, there were no assurances Brad Cooper and his lawyer would have the same resources available to them as were provided in the first trial to prove the map was planted. James Freeman was not as experienced in such cases as were Howard Kurtz or Robert Trenkle, Brad’s original attorneys, who did everything possible to discredit the map and other witnesses despite the obvious bias of the judge (as you will read in the book Howard Kurtz actually asked Paul Gessner to recluse himself because of his bias).Lynne’s book is a “must read” for the citizens, and particularly the legal community, of Wake County. Everyone should be entitled to a fair hearing before a competent, independent and impartial judge which was certainly not the case in either the custody or criminal proceedings. Unfortunately those responsible for this miscarriage of justice are still players in the Wake County justice system and proving “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt” is something these individuals clearly ignored and will likely do so again.

Teachers and Parents - A Wonderful Book For Kids of All Ages By anonymous This book is one of those rare ones that will hold the interest of a wide range of young people - primary grades through middle school. Actually, as a long-time elementary teacher who has taught many units on animals, I was not previously familiar with the pink animals depicted in the book. I learned a lot! The engaging illustrations add to the informative text, which also encourages the protection and conservation of our environment.

The three sisters were fluffy and pretty, and the brother was sleek and black.Buster had a square head and a crooked white snip on his nose. His fur was as orange as marmalade on warm toast.Their mother licked them clean, fed them, and looked after them so well that their cardboard box was as good a home as the comfiest cat basket. The kittens learned to open their eyes and look all around. They learned to wash their faces and paws clean with their scratchy tongues. And the mother cat kept them secret and safe. One day, when the kittens were just old enough to walk and tumble and play, the mother cat led them out of the box to explore the world beyond the garage. But as each tiny kitten came blinking out into its first bright sunlight, a hand grabbed it and dumped it into a sack. Themother cat yowled and the kittens meowed, but the sack was dropped into a car and the mother cat was left behind. The car drove down a long road whilethe frightened kittens squirmed in the dark, squeezy sack. Then they felt a whoosh! as the sack was tossed from the car and a thump! as they landed on the grass beside the road.No one saw it happen, and so no one ever knew who had done such a cruel and terrible thing.Buster knew, but he couldn't say--except that for the rest of his life he hated purple baseball caps, going in cars, and being anywhere squeezy where he couldn't get out.Luckily, the next person who drove down the road that day was a very different sort of person--and even more luckily, she saw the squirming sack. She didn'tknow what it was, but if it was squirming it must be alive, and if it was alive it didn't belong in a sack on the side of the road. Even though the bag squirmed so much that she was afraid it might be a snake, she stopped her car and walked slowly back while she tried to figure out what to do.As she got closer, she heard a chorus of meowing. The woman sprinted to the sack and ripped it open. She was furious at whoever had dumped the kittens, sad for how scared they were, and so happy that she had found them. She wanted to take them all home and give them enough love and kindness that they would never be frightened again. But she knew that one kitten was enough for her tiny apartment, so in the end she drove straight to the Rainbow Street Animal Shelter.Text copyright © 2011 by Wendy Orr Illustrations copyright © 2011 by Susan Boase All rights reserved.
