I'd rather the story not rhyme than have lines like this: "So you can go and fly away By AmaGirl7 It's a cute story, but some of the images and text don't quite match up and some of the text is difficult to read due to trying to keep with the rhyme. I'd rather the story not rhyme than have lines like this: "So you can go and fly away, And once more loud and happy be" - it seems minor, but when you are reading to 4 year olds, I'd rather have proper grammar used than a cute rhyme. Just my opinion though. Overall, it wasn't bad and I got it through Kindle Unlimited, so it was essentially free to read.

Henson This is the kind of book your kids will hope that there will be many sequels to come. The story is perfect for bedtime reading, it has a little action, a bit of humor and is simply fun. The illustrations are a bit out of the ordinary but that is what makes them so great. The author nails the perfect kid's book, grab a copy and your children will thank you for it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Full of emotions and surprises! Really enjoyed it! By Lisa H It was great!!! Cute story filled with humans, vampires and witches! I loved the main character, Harriett, and enjoyed following her story as she changed and became Ettie. The story was full of emotions and surprises that I didn't expect. Seriously!!! There were two shockers that were brilliant and totally kept the story thrilling. I loved the family bond of the coven and the dynamics. It made me think of the Cullen's but the characters and the story was it's own. Sabin is just as swoon-worthy as Edward though I must say. I really enjoyed this story and would love to read more! Great job Meaghan!

I hope there is more to come though!! :) Thought this statement made me giggle out loud! "8. Go to the library and do research on vampires. I think this task is going to jump to the top of my list."It's always on the top of my list too.

The Lost Track of Time, by Paige Britt

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Penelope never has enough time. At least, not enough to do what she wants. Her mother has her scheduled every minute of every day, even over her summer vacation. She hopes to pursue her dream of becoming a writer and is just coming to the realization that her parents will never understand her desire to tell stories when she's suddenly faced with a whole day, accidentally unscheduled. Running to her eccentric neighbor, Miss Maddie, Penelope suddenly finds herself in the Realm of Possibilities, a place where kids can moodle (imagine and dream) as much as they want and where those Ideas, Fancies, and even Worries appear in the world as actual things. Well, at least they used to when the Great Moodler was in charge. Penelope soon learns from her new friend Dill that those things have been outlawed and that the terrible Chronos has turned everyone into Clockworkers, whose lives are tied to the sound of the great ticking timepiece in the center of the gray, paved city that is taking over the Realm of Possibilities. Penelope and Dill set off to find the Great Moodler, with the help of some mushrooms and a Coo-Coo bird. The book makes clever use of wordplay, such as in a scene in which Penelope and Dill happen upon a Wild Bore, who turns out to be a very nice man who bores listeners to death with excessive talking. Muted purple illustrations are sprinkled throughout and match the imaginative and mercurial quality of the text. Unfortunately, the plot seems a bit too forced and didactic, particularly in attempting to teach Penelope, and thus readers, about the dangers of being overscheduled. VERDICT An additional purchase; good for collections looking for titles that emphasize the importance of imagination and free time.—Clare A. Dombrowski, Amesbury Public Library, MA

Review * "Debut author Britt’s tale is an exuberant homage to the power of imagination and creative problem-solving, as well as the importance of making time for oneself, one’s dreams, and one’s friends." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

About the Author Paige Britt grew up in a small town with her nose in a book and her head in the clouds. She studied journalism in college and theology in graduate school, but never stopped reading children’s books for life’s most important lessons. In addition to writing, she loves to sit and moodle. (If you don’t know what moodling is, you should probably read this book.) Paige lives in Georgetown, Texas, with her husband. The Lost Track of Time is her first novel.Lee White is an artist and teacher who loves watercolor, print making, and climbing trees. He spends his days splashing paint in his backyard studio, where there are absolutely no clocks allowed! He has illustrated more than fifteen books and shown in galleries across the country, from Los Angeles to New York. He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and young son.

My 9yo daughter borrowed this book from her school library and it is far and away one of the best books we have ever read together. The message it portrays, and the written visualization is unbelievable. If I could give this book more stars I would. I think it is a must read for every creative young person.Outstanding job Ms. Britt!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I had a great time reading this book By Jason Craft I had a great time reading this book. It's an exciting, fun adventure for kids, but also a cool exploration of mindfulness, time, and creativity. The characters were distinctive and engaging, from Penelope the protagonist to wonderful minor characters like the Timekeeper and Coo-coo. The illustrations and design are an inviting complement to Paige's bright and beautiful prose. You should check this book out!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Lost Track of Time found a way into my heart! By Judy Eyler Author Paige Britt's debuts into the literary realm with a stellar novel! Summer break has begun for Penelope, but it's no vacation! Her mother is insisting on budgeting every minute of the day. There is hardly time for Penelope to breathe, let alone create and write stories, which is what she longs to do. Her only escape is when she gets to visit Miss Maddie, her friend who lives down the road. When Penelope is late getting back from Miss Maddie's however, her mother bans her from spending any more time with her. One day something very unusual happens, Penelope finds a hole in her schedule. Excited to think that she can finally work on her writing, Penelope's joy turns to dismay when she realizes that her ideas have all dried up. Penelope runs to Miss Maddie's house for help, and while there just like Alice, she falls down a hole. The Wonderland that Penelope finds is quite strange: she has landed in the Realm of Possibilities, a once-wonderful land of endless dreams and imagination that has been taken over by the ruthless Chronos, who imprisons anyone who dares to dream of the impossible. The task set before Penelope is to find a way back to her home, and along the way discover the most creative daydreamer of all, the Great Moodler, in the hopes of having her help Penelope to gain back her story ideas. With the help of her new friend Dill Penelope embarks on the journey of a lifetime-one that might help to right the time-constrained world and allow once again for time to dream.I so enjoyed this book! It started out a bit slow for me, but as the story unfolded I began to see the underlying theme of this story. A cross between Alice in Wonderland and Willy Wonka, The Lost Track of Time serves as a startling reminder of how our lives have become imprisoned by time. There is so much pressure in today's world to achieve, stay busy, be mindlessly entertained- you name it- that our minds don't get the chance to dream, create and imagine. It is evident that Paige Britt hasn't let her mind become trapped in the stark routines of life to which many have fallen prey. Her wonderful characters and occurrences, many of which are a play on words : flights of Fancies, Hunches, worry warts, the Naughty Woulds, Wild Bores- add to the story in creative ways.I hope that readers everywhere will find the time to discover this little gem!

James C Ellerbe has written a very honest book that is inspiring and revealing, unafraid to share parts of his life that most men hide. The story of his evolution from a lost young man, looking to find himself to a mature man ready to turn a new page with the love of his life that God made him ready for is done in a logical but unpredictable and unique way. A lot of time and thought went into this work and his in-depth narratives in each chapter, along with the detailed introduction are welcoming to anyone who is interested in reading a rich book of poems. Two of my favorites to which I could fully relate were "The Outcast" and ""You Don't Love Me, You Love My Poetry". There are others, but you'll have to read them for yourself. I'm a selective reader and if a book does not grab my attention in the first five pages, I won't read anymore. On my first read-through I give it 5 Stars. It's a keeper!

Frank Baum's 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' is one of the more engaging novels in the famous series. When restless boy hero Woot The Wanderer happens upon the Tin Woodman's palace in the yellow Winkie country and learns of the emperor's origin and history, his question concerning the fate of Tin Woodman's one-time Munchkin fiancé, Nimmie Amee, spontaneously hatches a plot to discover her fate.Joined by the Scarecrow, the three set out on a journey through the amazing and perilous kingdoms of Oz. Uninvited, the three unwisely enter a castle in the purple Gillikin country and are captured by its giant resident, Mrs. Yoop. There they find old friend Polychrome, daughter of the rainbow, already imprisoned and transformed into a canary for the sorceress's amusement.Yookoohoo sorceress Mrs. Yoop, placid and regal, is one of Baum's more terrifying villains, showing as she does an undiluted sociopathic and amoral indifference to the fates of others, who she physically manipulates to suit her fancies.Beautiful and poised, Mrs. Yoop, who lives alone in a dead valley, uses her spell-casting talents to provide herself with sustenance; water, pebbles, and bundles of weeds become coffee, 'fish-balls,' and buttered biscuits with a wave of her hand. When Mrs. Yoop tells the journeyers she is unpleased with their present forms and will transform them to her liking in the morning, the unsubtle suggestion that they may be her next meal is clear.Mrs. Yoop is not only one in a long line of fairytale cannibal giants, but her gigantism and prim, coldly polite manners make clear she is also a figurative as well as a literal devouring mother.Archetypal motifs abound throughout, their subtexts driving the narrative and creating its sometime disturbing moods and moments. Woot magically degenerates into a green monkey, a form the text makes clear he finds atavistically embarrassing and unpleasant. In a scene fairly brazen for several reasons, agricultural demi-god the Scarecrow sacrifices his body to gain the gorge-spanning services of a straw-eating monster for his companions, only to be imperfectly 'resurrected' on the far side. The recounting of the Tin Woodman's slow transformation from a healthy Munchkin male into a man of tin underscores the multiple amputations that necessitated the slow replacement of his human limbs with those of metal, allowing Baum free reign to discourse on the nature of identity, though the theme of violence goes undressed. The book might have been called 'The Tin Woodmen Of Oz,' as by its second half there are two tin men, original Winkie king Nick Chopper and a second, soldier Captain Fyter, who was also once a man and became metal through exactly the same violent process. Both 'tin twins' have courted Nimmie Amee, and both been plagued by the Wicked Witch of the West in the period before Dorothy's house dropped upon her from the sky. It's doubtful that readers of the series ever wondered whatever became of Nick Chopper's 'meat' limbs after they were severed from his body, but this volume answers that question.Together with those of Captain Fyter, the mismatched limbs have been magically glued back together to create errant oddball homunculus Chopfyt, who, perhaps not unreasonably, is aggressive and ill-tempered.Where does Nick Chopper's humanity and being begin and end? The question comes in for special consideration when, revisiting his place of transformation from human to tin, he discovers his ungroomed human head alive, listless, and able to speak in a blacksmith's cabinet.Which of these creatures, if any, has a right to Nimmie Amee's hand in marriage? Has Nick, limited to a kind but not a loving heart, a right to invite her to become his bride and the Empress of the Winkies if he can only offer her dutiful companionship?Baum was unusually sensitive to the details and nuances of his plots, but here unaccountably overlooks a change of gender.Since Mrs. Yoop's strange Yookoohoo magic cannot be changed or undone by even the most powerful forces in Oz, Ozma, the land's fairy ruler, once a boy herself, comes to the conclusion that the stalwart Woot can only regain his original young man's form if another Ozian creature agrees to take on the form of the green monkey.Since readers are led to believe that Woot as the green monkey is still a male, Baum trips himself up when a female character is tricked into assuming the monkey's form.Baum fails to acknowledge that she has not only unhappily regressed into a beast, but now also inhabits a male body.In an interesting expository section, Oz Royal Historian Baum provides the reader with new facets of Oz's history and its magical rules and regulations.Once a part of the larger world, Oz, which has always been surrounded by an impassable desert, was enchanted by "the fairy band of Queen Lurline" sometime in the distant past. From that moment, no one has ever died or grown older in Oz. The young stay young, the old remain old. "Children remain children always, and play and romp to their hearts' content...while babies live in their cradles, are tenderly cared for and never grow up."Thus Oz is not so very different from Barrie's Never-Never Land (Oz was created roughly four years after Peter Pan debuted on the British stage), especially since children from America--and presumably other parts of Earth--occasionally find their way there.Dorothy, by the time of 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz' a permanent Oz resident, like Peter Pan, will now never grow older, though she may evolve and mature as a personality. Like Peter Pan, she will never know puberty, sexuality, adulthood, parenthood--or death.Always more than what they seem, the Oz books entertain, spellbind, and fascinate. 'The Tin Woodman Of Oz,' full of eccentric undertones and undertows, tugs at its readers with its strange siren call and is certain to leave children and adult readers perplexed, questioning, somewhat wiser, and anxiously reaching for the next volume.

He fell in love with a beautiful Munchkin girl who worked for the wicked witch. The witch tried to break up the couple by enchanting his ax. As his bewitched ax cut off parts of his body, Nick would get the parts replaced with tin prostheses by a tinsmith. He ended up totally tin after his ax split his trunk in half. We all know how he rusted in a sudden rainstorm only to be rescued by Dorothy Gale and an animated Scarecrow, and how the Wizard of Oz granted his wish by giving him a velvet heart. This book begins years later when a young wanderer named Woot, asks the Tin Man why, after he got his heart from the Wizard of Oz, he never went back to marry that Munchkin lass. The Woodman decides that he owes it to the young woman to go back and fulfill his promise to marry her. So he, the Scarecrow and Woot go off to find the Munchkin woman so he can propose to her. On the way they are captured by a giantess, meet their old friend Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter, and are transformed into a tin owl, a straw-stuffed bear, and a green monkey. They also run into a second tin man and have a reunion with the Munchkin tinsmith. Who is this second tin man? Will they regain their true forms? Will the Tin Woodman find his sweetheart and marry her? The story is well-developed and fun to read. It is an Oz adventure that all will enjoy.

Frank Baum gives the limelight to a character that hasn't had a lot of it in the previous 11: our friend the Tin Woodman, the former Nick Chopper and the current emperor of the Winkies. Indeed, even the Scarecrow, another of the beloved original characters from the first book, has had more airtime in this series, even though he's been largely on the periphery of the storylines. For the Tin Man's turn, Baum rightly addresses an unresolved issue from Nick's past: Whatever happened to that sweet Munchkin girl he fell in love with as a "meat" man, Nimmie Amee, and shouldn't he do right by her faithfulness to him amid his part-by-part transformation to a tin body, courtesy of the evil enchantment of the since-deceased Wicked Witch of the East? Shouldn't he reward Nimmie by marrying her, making her an empress, even though he doesn't have the same loving heart he used to as a flesh-and-blood man and doesn't really "love"-her-love-her these days?A new character, a young lad named Woot the Wanderer, becomes so enthralled by the Tin Woodman's back story that he convinces the emperor, along with his best friend Scarecrow, to journey to Munchkin Country and find Nimmie Amee. And so the adventure begins.Baum gets special praise in this one for explaining how Oz came to be a fairyland, as well as just why the Wicked Witch of the East shriveled up and scattered to dust when she had that fateful meeting with Dorothy's house.

By Dad of Divas Caroline Rowlands has written a book specifically for children who are interested in ballet. The book not only will teach ballet positions and dance, but will give your child opportunities to use their imagination and to show their creativity. There is a section about THE NUTCRACKER ballet. Your child will draw the missing pictures that accompany written text.Another group of pages show the positions of the hands and feet in typical ballet stances. With this visual your child will be able to practice these positions. The pages in this book will provide learning experiences and fun.*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A "Scarecrow" book light on the "Scarecrow" By Blake Petit In the pantheon of L. Frank Baum's brillian Oz series, I'm afraid I've got to mark this book down as just a so-so entry. It probably would have appealed to me more were it not for the grossly misleading title, "The Scarecrow of Oz." The titular character doesn't appear until about page 150 of a 260-page book, for starters, and while he certainly plays an important part in the events that follow, the book is not really about him at all. Instead it's the story of Trot and Cap'n Bill, two of Baum's non-Oz characters, being swept away to the land of Oz for the first time. For much of the book the story follows the formula of the most lackluster Oz books -- characters get lost in a magical fairy land and meet lots of strange and interesting creatures -- but it picks up when they enter Jinxland and are forced to face down King Krewl. The plus for this book would be that I'm now more inclined to go back and read the two Trot and Cap'n Bill books that preceded this one. I do admire the way Baum laced his various characters together into a cohesive universe of his own, even if he was practically forced to by the demands of his young readers. I just wish he'd found a way to express what this book was really about a little better.

Great reproduction of the original By Scott Love All the Books of Wonder Oz books are fantastic recreations of the originals with all their color plates and cover art. Even the typeface and page counts are the same. If you're a collector and can't afford to drop $300 on a beat-up copy of the original, this series is a must!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not one of the best in the series By ScrawnyPunk The Scarecrow of Oz was chiefly a way for Baum to introduce readers to another one of his book series (The Sea Fairies and Sky Island) to his more lucrative Oz readership. The story itself is a bit uneven, but is easily digested by younger readers as separate segments can be treated as stand-alone stories with a single unifying theme of moving Cap'n Bill and Trot from California to Oz.Synopsis: Cap'n Bill and Trot (a relationship which probably would not find its way into modern kiddie lit) go for a recreational row and get caught in a whirlpool. The whirlpool transports them to a fairy land which they escape with the help of an orc (a magical flying creature, not the nasties in Tolkein) and some magical shrinking berries. They spend a little bit of time in the Land of Mo (another Oz series) before escaping once again with recurring character Button-Bright (from the Road to Oz), the help of some adventuresome birds and magical growing berries. They land in Jinxland, a semi-autonomous region within Oz, where they accidentally insert themselves into the nuptial politics of the local ruler, an elderly but wealthy courtesan, the daughter of a deposed king, and the son of another deposed king. The three characters are unable to do anything other than get into serious trouble with a local witch and are eventually bailed out by the combination of the Scarecrow's planning, a sudden re-appearance of the original orc with an army of his friends, and a bit of lucky timing. After restoring the king's daughter to her rightful throne and true love, they make their way back to the Emerald City where they meet everyone. The story abruptly ends at this point - the reader can assume Capn' Bill and Trot have found a home in Oz although the story's beginning did not make it seem as if Trot's family was either lost or worth leaving.

Party Crasher

Princess Bella stared at her evil aunt, Queen Fire, trying to look brave. Bella had been having a great time with the rest of her classmates at a fun dance that her parents, King Phillip and Queen Katherine, had planned to celebrate the end of the year. But Queen Fire had been a not-so-fun party surprise. “How long does this”—Bella pointed to the black powder that hid them both from the other guests—“last?” “Dear niece, don’t worry about our privacy,” Queen Fire said in a sugar-sweet tone. Bella’s aunt had raven-black hair that hung down her back, glittering eyes, and matching ruby-red lips and nails. “Did you have to come during my party?” Bella asked. “I can come and go whenever I please,” Queen Fire said. She glanced away from Bella, taking in the happy chatter and fun as Bella’s classmates danced nearby. Bella started to say something, but she bit her lip to keep quiet. Had she imagined the flicker of sadness on Queen Fire’s face? “Please let me go,” Bella begged. “Today and tomorrow are the last days I can spend with my cousin before she goes home. I know I owe you a favor, though, and I am not going back on my promise.” Images flashed through Bella’s mind—picture after picture of that horrible time when Glimmer, Bella’s unicorn, had run away to the Dark Forest. Bella and Glimmer had just started to get to know each other after the two had been matched on Bella’s eighth birthday. But Glimmer had run away, and when Bella had found her in the scary Dark Forest, they were suddenly in the path of Queen Fire’s dangerous unicorns. Bella and Glimmer had been seconds away from serious trouble before Queen Fire saved them. In turn, Bella had pledged to help her aunt if she ever needed it. And if she did not help Queen Fire, her aunt was going to take Glimmer away. Queen Fire crossed her arms. “I had a feeling you would back out of our deal.” “I’m not letting you have Glimmer!” Bella said. “Then I suggest you listen very carefully. There is a crystal hidden in your castle. It has, let’s say, sentimental value to me.” “Where is it?” Queen Fire laughed. “Niece, if I knew the answer, I would have told you. I’m not that evil.” “So that’s what I have to do?” Bella asked. “I have to find this crystal?” She paused. “Is it hidden away for a reason? Am I going to get in trouble for finding the crystal and giving it to you?” Queen Fire leaned close to Bella. “If you’re worried about getting in trouble, then don’t get caught.” Bella felt like she was underwater—like someone had stuffed cotton balls in her ears. The class party felt very far away, and she did not know what to say to her aunt. Bella swallowed. “Is that all? Because I really need to get back and—” “Fine.” Queen Fire sighed, waving a pale hand in the air. “Go back to your party, dear. I’m getting rather tired of hiding, though. I want you at my castle tomorrow. We need to talk. I need to make sure you understand the importance of your task.” Bella chewed on the inside of her cheek. She didn’t want to ask more questions to keep the queen here longer, but . . . “Can I come on Sunday? Please?” Queen Fire stared, unblinking, at Bella. “Sunday. Before sunset, or I’ll have my guards begin to ready a stall at my stables for Glimmer.” “Not a cha—” Queen Fire vanished before Bella could finish her sentence. Bella looked down, and all the black powder had disappeared too. Okay, pull yourself together, Bella. You can’t let anyone see that you’re upset. She glanced down at her shaking hands. She walked over to a crystal punch bowl floating in the air. “One cup, please,” she said, testing out her voice. She thought she sounded like her usual self. A ladle dipped into the bowl, filling a cup with red punch. The cup lowered itself in front of Bella. “Thank you.” Bella took the cup and sipped, trying to shake off Queen Fire’s visit. She smoothed her sparkly teal dress with her free hand. “Bella?” A familiar voice called her name. “Over here,” Bella said as she forced a smile onto her face. Her best friends, Ivy and Clara, along with her cousin, Violet, surrounded her. “Did you help that lady who was looking for you?” Ivy asked. Bella nodded, grabbing Ivy’s hand and tugging her forward. “Yes. Let’s go back to the party.” The princess accompanied her friends and her cousin out of the tent and made a silent vow to never let Queen Fire that close to her friends ever again.

This is the story of a girl who's creepy relative is forcing here to do something she doesn't want to, and threatening to take away her favorite pet if she doesn't do as she's told. Parents -- what does this sound like to you? My real problem with this book is the way this resolves. SPOILER ALERT! Princess Bella does what the evil queen asks, and doesn't tell her parents. She will get a stern talking-to, later, after the book is done. And her mom and the evil Queen Fire (the creepy relative) are reunited. There's a huge teaching opportunity lost here. Kids -- If someone is forcing you to do something that you know isn't right, they don't hold nearly as much power over you as you think! Tell a grown up you trust. Do you really think Princess Bella's parents -- a Queen and King!!! --- couldn't protect her and her unicorn! And there aren't too many mothers who are going to suddenly be on great terms with someone who just manipulated their child.

Intertwined in the magical world where fly were as big as basketball and where alarm clock shone rainbow over you until you wake up, Jessica Burkhart has adroitly inserted emotional elements; the anxiety of Princess Bella to save her unicorn Glimmer, her heartfelt emotion towards her aunt - Queen Fire when they had tea, the secret between Queen Katherine and Queen Fire; which most likely will be revealed only in Jessica's new book. A well balanced book!

This book kept her interested. I bought her the Unicorn Magic series. She loved them. I would recommend this book as well as any of the other books written by Jessica Burkhart.

More than 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam. On my worst days I used to wish I was one of them. On my good days, however, I recall the funny, sad, quirky or poignant incidents that took place during my time in the World’s Largest and Cleanest Nuclear Navy. “Orange Socks & other colorful tales” is a compilation of the stories I’ve told family and friends over the years. Sam Harris, one of those friends, said I should write down those tiny tales, and I did. Thanks Sam. Like every veteran in every war, we did what we could, even when we were getting mixed messages from the home front. Vietnam-era vets know what I mean. They have stories, too—probably better than mine. Non-vets will wonder how you can laugh during a war. As my buddy Juli used to say, “You can laugh—or you can cry.” In Vietnam, I did both.

It was like sitting and listening to your favorite uncle tell of far away places with such tasty prose. You would never guess how the author named his book - not in a million years. Hilarious!! Many tales woven into one story made this book fun to read. I appreciate this book because it shares one man's experience about a war I grew up knowing only as a bitter saga. Thank you to the author for giving this part of American history a more palatable viewpoint. This was my first Kindle purchase.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tons of information and great artwork = very happy By DDC As another reviewer pointed out, this is more of a compendium than a straight up story. That being said, there are 12-15 page blocks (not really chapters, but almost) that can be read as a unit. The artwork in the book is straight from some of the best comics and so it is really leagues above most of the kids' books. The book has a ton of information and back-story on lots of the characters (which my be helpful to parents that didn't grow up reading Marvel but have a kid that is full of questions!!).My 5 year old son loves this book. It's obviously too advanced for him to read, but we read it to him. It's become a real favorite in our house and we will generally tackle a couple of the 15 page blocks before bed. I recommend this to you and I hope this review helps.
