The Lost Track of Time, by Paige Britt

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Penelope never has enough time. At least, not enough to do what she wants. Her mother has her scheduled every minute of every day, even over her summer vacation. She hopes to pursue her dream of becoming a writer and is just coming to the realization that her parents will never understand her desire to tell stories when she's suddenly faced with a whole day, accidentally unscheduled. Running to her eccentric neighbor, Miss Maddie, Penelope suddenly finds herself in the Realm of Possibilities, a place where kids can moodle (imagine and dream) as much as they want and where those Ideas, Fancies, and even Worries appear in the world as actual things. Well, at least they used to when the Great Moodler was in charge. Penelope soon learns from her new friend Dill that those things have been outlawed and that the terrible Chronos has turned everyone into Clockworkers, whose lives are tied to the sound of the great ticking timepiece in the center of the gray, paved city that is taking over the Realm of Possibilities. Penelope and Dill set off to find the Great Moodler, with the help of some mushrooms and a Coo-Coo bird. The book makes clever use of wordplay, such as in a scene in which Penelope and Dill happen upon a Wild Bore, who turns out to be a very nice man who bores listeners to death with excessive talking. Muted purple illustrations are sprinkled throughout and match the imaginative and mercurial quality of the text. Unfortunately, the plot seems a bit too forced and didactic, particularly in attempting to teach Penelope, and thus readers, about the dangers of being overscheduled. VERDICT An additional purchase; good for collections looking for titles that emphasize the importance of imagination and free time.—Clare A. Dombrowski, Amesbury Public Library, MA

Review * "Debut author Britt’s tale is an exuberant homage to the power of imagination and creative problem-solving, as well as the importance of making time for oneself, one’s dreams, and one’s friends." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

My 9yo daughter borrowed this book from her school library and it is far and away one of the best books we have ever read together. The message it portrays, and the written visualization is unbelievable. If I could give this book more stars I would. I think it is a must read for every creative young person.Outstanding job Ms. Britt!

It's an exciting, fun adventure for kids, but also a cool exploration of mindfulness, time, and creativity. The characters were distinctive and engaging, from Penelope the protagonist to wonderful minor characters like the Timekeeper and Coo-coo. The illustrations and design are an inviting complement to Paige's bright and beautiful prose. You should check this book out!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Lost Track of Time found a way into my heart! By Judy Eyler Author Paige Britt's debuts into the literary realm with a stellar novel! Summer break has begun for Penelope, but it's no vacation! Her mother is insisting on budgeting every minute of the day. There is hardly time for Penelope to breathe, let alone create and write stories, which is what she longs to do. Her only escape is when she gets to visit Miss Maddie, her friend who lives down the road. When Penelope is late getting back from Miss Maddie's however, her mother bans her from spending any more time with her. One day something very unusual happens, Penelope finds a hole in her schedule. Excited to think that she can finally work on her writing, Penelope's joy turns to dismay when she realizes that her ideas have all dried up. Penelope runs to Miss Maddie's house for help, and while there just like Alice, she falls down a hole. The Wonderland that Penelope finds is quite strange: she has landed in the Realm of Possibilities, a once-wonderful land of endless dreams and imagination that has been taken over by the ruthless Chronos, who imprisons anyone who dares to dream of the impossible. The task set before Penelope is to find a way back to her home, and along the way discover the most creative daydreamer of all, the Great Moodler, in the hopes of having her help Penelope to gain back her story ideas. With the help of her new friend Dill Penelope embarks on the journey of a lifetime-one that might help to right the time-constrained world and allow once again for time to dream.I so enjoyed this book! It started out a bit slow for me, but as the story unfolded I began to see the underlying theme of this story. A cross between Alice in Wonderland and Willy Wonka, The Lost Track of Time serves as a startling reminder of how our lives have become imprisoned by time. There is so much pressure in today's world to achieve, stay busy, be mindlessly entertained- you name it- that our minds don't get the chance to dream, create and imagine. It is evident that Paige Britt hasn't let her mind become trapped in the stark routines of life to which many have fallen prey. Her wonderful characters and occurrences, many of which are a play on words : flights of Fancies, Hunches, worry warts, the Naughty Woulds, Wild Bores- add to the story in creative ways.I hope that readers everywhere will find the time to discover this little gem!
