Frustration overload By Ole-Kristian Bjerkeli I find it strange that nobody mentions that the buildup in this book is so so.On several occations the author tries to explain new functions in a formula that contains several other functions he has not yet explained. In order to understand the whole formula I had to skip several hundred pages forward in the book to find an explanations to those parts. There was even some functions I couldn't find in the index. Those I had to google before I could continue reading. When I got to page 400 I was so frustrated by the the increasing frequency of this problem so I closed the book for good.Perhaps it is a good reference book for the expert user, but I would not recommend it for someone that wants to learn Excel.

By OneMoreThing Once you start this series, you will not want to stop until you have read the entire saga. The authors are experts at building suspense and writing cliffhangers, so save yourself some money, and buy it all at once. My eight-year-old son is deeply invested in these characters, and I'm hooked, too. That said, these books are not the greatest literary works on the planet. They are full of stylistic inconsistencies, continuity errors (what color are Crowfeather's eyes?), and outright grammatical errors. Nevertheless, the stories themselves make up for the occasional lack of art in the telling of them, and I am glad to have been able to share them with my son.

28 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Great to a point -possible spoilers- By RookBlack I'm an 18 year old who has been a fan of the series since the release of the first book of the original series "Into the Wild". I loved the original series and still re-read them to this day. I am a die-hard warriors fan and probably always will be, so don't take this lightly when I say this series wasn't all that great. When I read the first book I was expecting something totally different than what I got. It wasn't a bad surprise, but definitely wasn't what I expected. I enjoyed it. This enjoyment lasted for about the first three books. Then in Dawn, something I really hated happened(I won't say what, just suffice to say I had to put the book down and wait a bit before I could continue reading). I began to become wary of the direction the series was headed in, but was still willing to go along for the ride. The momentum of the story kept me going and I still enjoyed the books. Then I got to the last one. The biggest disappointment in the warriors series for me.It would be an understatement to say that the finale of New Prophecy pales in comparison to that of Darkest Hour. They aren't even close. I began to suspect I wasn't going to get what I had hoped for when I had maybe a chapter left and they still hadn't resolved the true conflict of the story. The ending of the series seemed extremely rushed. There just wasn't the same suspense, or even the same flow. The finale starts like it might lead somewhere, but the end comes far too soon and just left me sitting there wondering "Is that really it? Really?" The truth is, my friend(another avid fan) and I often still joke about it.I won't say it is a bad series, because that's not true at all. It is worth reading. Just don't come in expecting anything like the original series. You won't get it.

19 of 23 people found the following review helpful. My son loves these books By J. Curll Ironically my mother bought the first two books for my son two years ago, and they sat on his shelf. His best friend read them and raved about them, so he finally gave them a try. He has devoured these books. For the first time ever I found myself saying, "I can't believe I'm saying this, but put that book down!" He's now on book four. He started today, Thursday, and I can pretty much guarantee he'll be done by Sunday and begging for the next one. He took the AR tests at school for the first three and answered every question correctly. I'm thrilled! (He also loved "The Looking Glass Wars" - wasn't as crazy about the sequel "Seeing Redd.")

P.K. Pinkerton and the Pistol-Packing Widows, by Caroline Lawrence

From Booklist In the third P. K. Pinkerton title, business is booming for 12-year-old detective P. K. in 1862 Virginia City. Things take an unexpected turn when P. K. is kidnapped and then hired by mysterious Opal Blossom to go to Carson City and investigate whether her fiancé, “Poker Face” Jace, who is also P. K.’s mentor, is two-timing her. There, amidst the political wheeling and dealing around Nevada’s impending statehood, P. K. discovers the woman Jace is courting. Violetta De Baskerville isn’t as she appears, and Jace’s life may be in danger, but P. K., a master of disguises, has secrets, too; and protecting them—and Jace—means deciding whom to trust and what to reveal before it’s too late. The Wild West setting again comes alive through colorful characters—both new and returning allies and foes, abundant period detail, and the ever-engaging, P. K., a half Sioux loner whose colloquial, lively account also incorporates issues from facing prejudice and past tragedy to finding the meaning of friendship, self-acceptance, and acceptance by others. A don’t-miss for series followers, who’ll enjoy learning more about P. K.’s history—and possible future—in this humorous, suspenseful, ultimately heartfelt tale. Grades 4-7. --Shelle Rosenfeld

It's not a great example of perfect report style grammar. But the writing is solidly in character all the time. It doesn't jump perspective like some other not so good children stories. I really love that it has a main character with what could be called a disability. And it doesn't really gimmick that up. It's just part of the character. And the character finds techniques to overcome it. Just awesome. That it's set in Virginia City, which is a relatively close, awesome ghost town is fantastic. If I had more ambition I would comb the books and make a map to follow next time we're there. That there are "cameos" of actual figures of historical significance, great.Creative, and all the hard work of making it cohesive and immersive is something I truly, really, deeply appreciate. Especially in a book I can share with my child.Re-reading some of my old favorites with my son, well I'm horrified at the misogyny, and lack of effort to engage with the reader as someone of intelligence (I'm not saying genius, but c'mon, kids are not dumb).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Once again, a Winner By Hearth's Fyre I've raved about Caroline's earlier books and other series; now I have to continue promoting the great work she's doing with PK Pinkerton. Once again, this book is highly entertaining and educational BUT Caroline's work is so much more than that. She weaves together Great Ideas in ways that NO OTHER AUTHOR is attempting. Her work stands alone as a unique glimpse into areas of human nature that aren't often explored in literature. Read it and you'll see. Kids enjoy it; adults will be floored.

There were a few areas that began to feel a bit tedious, but all in all, a fun read with a not completely unexpected twist at the end. Too bad the final book in the series isn't yet available in the US.

The many meanings of the word Aloha By Grady Harp Alinka Rutkowska writes the "Maya & Filippo" Book Series for Children - travel books for kids with a positive attitude. She takes inspiration from her own travels while cruising with her husband and daughter around the world. She is positive, appreciative and happy 95% of the time and during the miserable 5% she thinks to herself quickly: "things always work out for me" and they do. As with her previous books she engages the assistance of Konrad Checinski as her skillful illustrator. As her previous readers will know Maya and Filippo are siblings AND best friends and this time their world adventures take them to Oahu, Hawaii. They learn that the word `Aloha' means hello when they see people. Maya and Filippo visit the beach, do the hula dance and learn to play the ukelele. A friendly islander explains that the word `aloha' has many meanings - `aloha' is a way of life and is consistent with the `Spirit of Aloha.' When people are happy in their home, it is a sense of feeling Aloha. When you are happy in your life, then you are true to Aloha. The spirit of Aloha is evident in the happiness of people who are enjoying themselves - and life!.In addition to the delightful book there is a quiz so that children can re-live the adventure from memory (or from referencing their book) their own version of Maya and Filippo show Aloha. A fun combination of listening and acting out! Grady Harp, March 15

In 2001, Quentin Blake - the first Children's Laureate - chose twenty-six of his favorite paintings for an exhibition at the National Gallery. Very different artworks were chosen, some by fine artists and some by children's illustrators, but they all had one thing in common: a story to tell. The accompanying book urges children to use their imaginations and look for the stories in the pictures. Reissued with a new introduction from the author, Tell Me A Picture will show a new generation the adventures that await in looking at art.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 6-Believing that enjoyment of the art in picture books can be a prelude to pleasure in a museum, Blake designed an exhibit (with the same title as this book) at the National Gallery in London. The images in the show and on these pages come from European children's books and Great Britain's galleries and were chosen for their story potential. Blake's signature caricatures cavort and converse before and after each of the 26 pictures, modeling responses that invite imitation. His arrangement is alphabetical by artist, from Hendrick Avercamp to Lisbeth Zwerger. ("X," however, is an X ray of an underpainting, sure to fascinate since it is different from the surface.) Four pages are devoted to each entry. Initially, sketches of children, outlined in black and dabbed with gray/blue patches of color, carry signs that announce the artist's name. The spread that follows includes a blank, white page and then the featured art-a presentation that minimizes distraction. The fourth page provides the young visitors' emotional responses to the work. ("Nobody would buy that." "What do you think that music sounded like?") Most entries will be unfamiliar to American audiences, and some details are difficult to discern. As with any stroll through a museum, what strikes one's fancy is completely idiosyncratic. Blake's approach is an engaging path to art appreciation, with plenty of child appeal. The book concludes with illustrated and annotated attributions for each work and a list of locations/credits. A welcome addition to the realm of visual literacy for families and educators.Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public LibraryCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review Children's Book Of The Week "Reissued for a new generation, this classic has lost none of its power." The Times "The children's art criticism is engagingly artless but encourages curiosity." The Observer "A truly awesome collection of art from some of our favourite artists, wrapped up in a book that just begs to be explored." Read It Daddy "Excellent." Red Reading Hub An absolute must for children (and grown ups) everywhere. Angels & Urchins "As the first Children's Laureate, Quentin Blake created an original exhibition in the National Gallery, London, for which he chose 26 of his favourite pictures. Some were illustrations from children's books, others were pictures by artists such as Edward Hopper and Paula Rego. All were wonderful pictures that tell a story. Through Quentin Blake's choices and his gentle notes about the pictures, all young readers have the opportunity to enjoy all kinds of art and to bring their own meaning to it." -- Julia Eccleshare Love Reading "An unusual and stimulating approach to art." I love how each picture is given lots of space on a white page, uncluttered by commentary or cutesyness, as is found in so many other art books for kids. Then the cartoon commentary is given its own pages, after the children have already made their own interpretations of the art, and it's not condescending or preachy-teachy, but is just another interpretation. I'm a preschool teacher, and in every class I've shared this with, it has prompted excited gasps and putting noses close to the page and lots and lots of conversation. Great for sharing with small groups of children, so everyone can get a good look.

I turn to books as a gift that is thoughtful and will always be the right size. Tell Me a Picture is always my first choice. The book challenges not only a child of any age, but parents and grandparents as well. It's like walking through a museum. Each picture allows you to consider it through whatever lens of experience you may have. I'm often told how surprised my friends are by what their children see in these pictures that we might overlook as adults. I've found this gift especially profound for friends who are artists, aficionados and admirers.

An alphabet book of paintings, drawings, and illustrations, and you get to make up a story as you look at them with your children. And Quentin Blake's illustrated gang of kids makes comments, too.Very interesting art selections. Some nudity, so your 11-year-old will be interested. The end notes give titles and descriptions of the selected artworks. Just a great book to have in the house, and inspiration to use other books in a similar way.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Solicitor General's Style Guide Is a Great Resource for Lawyers By Brendan Kenny The Solicitor General, who represents the United States in the nation’s highest court, is the only official of the U.S. government required by federal law to be “learned in the law.”So those of us who care about legal writing naturally took notice when the second edition of The Solicitor General’s Style Guide: Second Edition dropped on October 3, 2015 and became Amazon’s #1 new release in legal writing. In addition to taking a stand in favor of case law as opposed to caselaw, the guide makes some important recommendations in favor of active voice, plain language, and better typography. It should not come as a surprise that something in the guide was controversial. And it was only a matter of time before people who care about legal writing would find an excuse to bicker over something in the guide on Twitter. The powder keg was the guide’s preference for case law over caselaw. In support, it cited a memorandum from President Reagan’s Solicitor General Charles Fried calling for “total extirpation” of this “barbarism”. (pg. 87.)Transitive verbs express something you can do (like kick, push, or clean) to a direct object (like a table, stroller, or a toilet). Using transitive verbs means using the active voice, and using the active voice almost always makes for better writing. The guide takes a step toward encouraging the active voice by telling writers to stop using cite as a noun. (pg. iv.)Hereinafter looks like one of those words that falls within the category of legalese. And a growing number of legal writers share Justice Stephen Breyer’s opinion on legalese: “I’m against it … Terrible! Terrible!”But Rule 4.2 of the Bluebook instructs lawyers to use hereinafter to signal a short citation. The Guide calls out the Bluebook position and rejects it:We depart from the Bluebook in that the word “hereinafter” is not used to introduce a short form for an authority that would be cumbersome to cite repeatedly. Instead a short name will be introduced in the parentheses (without quotation marks) immediately following the source, and the shortened form shall be in the same typeface as the source.Matthew Butterick describes Courier New as”spindly, lumpy, and just plain ugly.” It’s hard to disagree. But some courts still require that lawyers write briefs in Courier. The new edition of the guide represents another step toward removing Courier fonts from polite society. The Guide’s predecessor from 2007 “was typeset entirely in Courier, using underlining, boldface, and sometimes all-caps for emphasis.” (pg. vi.) Even the 2014 update to the first edition of The Solicitor General’s Guide continued to use Courier for the examples of its rules. To the great relief of many legal writers, the guide is now set entirely in Century Expanded. Not surprisingly, the United States Supreme Court requires that the typeface used in all submissions “must be in a Century family.”As much as legal-writing nerds may bemoan it, many lawyers still use two spaces after a period. The guide comes up with a compromise I’ve never heard of before. (pg. vii.)The second edition of the Guide also employs, for the first time, an “em space” (i.e., a special space that is the width of a capital “M”) between sentences and after a colon. This represents a middle-course in the number-of-spaces after-a-sentence-war. Am em space is just one space, but it is significantly wider than an ordinary space. And you might be surprised by the em space’s origins. (pg. vii.)After painstaking research, the editor settled on the em space after concluding that the United States Reports uses the em space in this manner, and appears to have done so for a long long time.To my great surprise and delight, the guide delved into the weeds of word-space geekery by recommending that writers use a “hair space” after a lowercase f and j, when those letters are followed by an apostrophe, quotation mark, parenthesis, or bracket.” (pg. vi.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. In writing Supreme Court briefs, some rules are clear ... By Sean Marotta In writing Supreme Court briefs, some rules are clear. But many are not. What do you capitalize? What goes in italics? How do you format the caption on the cover? When the formal rules run out, partners always ask: "Well, how does the Solicitor General do it?" After all, the Solicitor General is the most prolific advocate before the Court. Mimicking him is never wrong. Before Metzler's publication of the Solicitor General's Style Guide, associates would just have to look at example briefs and figure out the rule from the example. After Metzler's edited guide, you can get the rule right from the source. A must-have for anyone who briefs (or may brief) cases in the Supreme Court.

Warriors #3: Forest of Secrets (Warriors: The Prophecies Begin), by Erin Hunter

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-As this third book in this series begins, Fireheart, former house pet turned warrior cat, continues to be torn between his allegiance to his Thunderclan and his suspicions that Tigerclaw is planning to take over as its leader. When Fireheart gets proof of his deceit and presents his findings to the clan's wise and compassionate leader, she refuses to believe him. Tensions are already running high between the clans because the cats are getting sick from fish from the polluted rivers, flooding is widespread, and they must invade each other's territory for food. The tragic death of Graystripe's mate as she's giving birth and his betrayal of the clan by loving a cat from an enemy clan bring the simmering tensions to a boil as both groups claim rights to the kits. Other secrets come to light as Tigerclaw, exiled in disgrace, vows revenge and Fireheart becomes the new deputy. This exciting book is not for the faint of heart as it is often violent. It is reminiscent of Greek drama, with its huge cast of characters (a chart of allegiances is included), intrigues, divided loyalties, star-crossed lovers, and parents murdering their offspring. Fans of the series will lap it up while impatiently awaiting the next entry.Sharon Rawlins, Piscataway Public Library, NJCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 6-9. Following Fire and Ice [BKL Ag 03], this third book in the Warriors series finds the cat Firepaw still suspicious of Tigerclaw, the deputy to the leader of ThunderClan. For his part, Tigerclaw continues to have it in for Firepaw, and as Firepaw investigates the death of ThunderClan warrior Redtail, a number of secrets are revealed--to the dismay of many clan members. Hunter adds to the mix a devastating flood, shifting alliances between clans, treachery within and without ThunderClan, and attempted murder--a combination that makes for another dynamic episode sure to please series fans. Fans of the series will lap it up while impatiently awaiting the next entry.” (School Library Journal)“Hunter moves forward with a sure hand in the third installment of this fast-moving series. The story is suspenseful; the feline characters are engaging.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

This one is one of my favorites, since it has so many surprises, and, like lots of reviews say, its really descriptive. I agree, its one of the saddest books, with the death and all, but it's really, really, good, too!In this installemnt, Fireheart struggles to get Graystripe to stop seeing Silverstream, and their relationship does end, but in a different way than you might think. There are floods, and RIverClan is chased out of their camp, so Fireheart and Graystripe try to help them. Plus Tigerclaw makes an attempt to kill FIreheart. This series is the best one that I've ever read, and to all that haven't already: Read them!

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A Lost In Life By Pink Princess Graystripe's new lover is having a newborn and both cat's are very excited. When Graystripe breaks the news to Fireheart, Fireheart starts to worry how long they plan this secret to continue on.Truth has finally been revealed about Tigerclaw's darkest secret and was spreaded around the Thunderclan camp like wildfire. A huge battle was broken in between Thunderclan and Tigerclaw. But Tigerclaw isn't intrested in killing Thunderclan cats, he's intrested in killing their leader so he can become the devilish leader he's always wanted to be. He fails when Fireheart comes in for the rescue. Soon afterward, Tigerclaw was kicked out of Thunderclan for good. The most saddest event is uncovered between Graystripe and Silverstream. Graystripe thought it would be best if he stayed in Riverclan were Silverstream was. Fireheart feels as if his clan is falling apart and he doesn't know how to repair it.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. The great cat saga continues! By A Customer Fire alone can save our clan.......Fireheart is a your handsome ginger tom. He is trying to tell the leader, Bluestar that Tigerclaw has murdered Redtail and is power thirsty. Bluestar does not beileve him because Tigerclaw is deputy and would never do that. To prove that Tigerclaw didn't kill Oakheart in avenge for Redtails death he askes a loner or to us a stray, Ravenpaw, to tell him what happened. Ravenpaw was in Thunderclan which is a group of cats. He says that Oakheart died from a rockfall. Now he knows the dark warrior is lying. What's going to happen read the book to find out! This is my favorite series of all time. It is detailed and the characters are realistic. Once you except that cats can't talk it seems very real. I wish is could rate it infentity stars, but it only goes up to five. READ IN ORDER. IT WILL SEEM CONFUSING IF YOU DON'T.

With an Updated Epilogue by the Author

"A compelling portrait of seasoned homicide cops at work. This is L.A.'s darkest side: ironic, heart-breaking, stunningly violent, unfailingly human. Riveting."-Jonathan Kellerman

The mandate for Los Angeles' unique police unit Homicide Special is to take on the toughest, most controversial, and highest-profile cases. In this "literate, unfailingly interesting work of true crime" (Kirkus Reviews), acclaimed writer Miles Corwin uses unprecedented access to narrate six of the unit's cases-and capture its newest generation at work.

When a call girl from Kiev dies in the line of duty, detectives Chuck Knolls and Brian McCartin seek her killer among a circle of Russian women who have been sold into white slavery. When a gangster's daughter takes a bullet, veterans Jerry Stephens and Paul Coulter trace clues scattered across the country to a Manhattan real-estate magnate. A cold case is reopened; a mother-daughter drowning and a baffling rape/murder are solved. And, finally, Corwin re-creates the investigation surrounding the late Bonny Lee Blakley, allegedly murdered by her actor-husband, Robert Blake.

With a revised epilogue updating each of these fascinating cases, Homicide Special offers a riveting, behind-the-scenes look at one of the preeminent units of homicide detectives in the country.

Review “Compelling . . . Corwin has helped demystify not just Homicide Special, but all of police culture, and given it a very personal face.” ―Los Angeles Times Book Review

About the Author

A former staff reporter at the Los Angeles Times, Miles Corwin is the author of The Killing Season and And Still We Rise. He lives in Los Angeles.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. From Homicide Special:Susan Berman’s wood-shingled cottage seems distinctly out of place at the edge of Beverly Hills. In Berman’s living room, a Liberace ashtray, shaped like a piano, holds a few crumpled butts. On the wall are pictures of Berman’s parents: her mother tap-dancing, one of her father’s wanted posters, which reads “Reward $8000.” Another wall features a photo of Susan in a party dress posing with Jimmy Durante. Her refrigerator contains only a carton of milk, a half-stick of butter, a jug of cranberry juice cocktail and a package of cheddar cheese. In the spare bedroom where Berman was killed, faint winter light bleeds through the window and illuminates a few brownish-red commas of blood. Berman was found in a white T-shirt and purple sweatpants. Barefoot. A single bullet casing was discovered next to her body. She was shot once in the back of the head.

Fascinating and gripping By Vince Miles Corwin writes beautifully and does a great job in engaging the reader not just with the detectives, but with the victims, the families of the victims, and even with the suspects, as in the end i couldn't help but feel sorry for some of them. A great insight into real police work that doesn't always end with nailing a case. I also enjoyed learning that these detectives have a great sense of humor as a way to exorcise the grime of their job.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing journalism By R. Trapp I have always been a true-crime fan and this book sets the bar incredibly high. Not only is the author a masterful writer that truly puts you as close to the action as anyone can on paper, but his style is engrossing and makes this book impossible to put down. The cases are fascinating, and his access to this elite squad of detectives is virtually unheard of. This is truly a book you wont forget anytime soon.

Way better than 99% of the fictional crime solving you see in television and film. I love his descriptions of the officers, the city, the "inside" look.He is a fine writer. I plan to locate his other books and devour them, too.

In the deep, bice, swampy waters of Louisiana, novice journalist Vivienne Gray falls head over heels in love with a man she supposed to be interviewing, Jase Blackwell. When Vivienne saves Jase’s life they are pulled into an ancient curse that has plagued the Blackwell family for years. There is a reason behind superstition. It's because it's all true. Not believing does not make it go away.

I knew Mr. Blackwell by AB Novak was of the paranormal genre, but this was so different. I've read a lot of paranormal books and none of them prepared me for Mr. Blackwell. This is AB Novak's debut novel and I'm so impressed. Everything is different from any romance novel I've ever read whether it be paranormal or contemporary.Ok, don't laugh...but when I first started reading it...it made me think of Duck Dynasty with much hotter guys and bows/arrows rather than duck calls. Please don't think this is a slur against the show or the author...I think it was the description of the family living in the swamp/woods. Well, moving on, I hope I don't offend anyone with the comparison. I love the family in this group especially Macie...she made me laugh a lot.As the story kept going, I knew there was something big going on under the surface. Being from South Louisiana myself, I know of the superstition that many of the people from there especially the older people sometimes embrace. I kept reading with my heart beating faster and faster. Every time, Jase or Mr. Blackwell and Vivienne are together, it's like a cord pulling them closer and closer together. It was amazing to read. Then when the heart pain started, all I could think is crap, this is going to get really bad! But, I couldn't put it down. I'm not usually that sort of reader...when I know something bad is going to happen, I almost hate to finish the book.I think AB Novak has a bright future ahead with writing if Mr. Blackwell is any indication of her writing talent, then I expect to hear great things. The only reason I didn't give Mr. Blackwell 5 stars is because the ending seemed really rushed. I do realize that part of that is due to the story line but I hated not having any indication of Jase and Vivienne's future. Don't let this one little thing overshadow a great book...this is just my opinion. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great original paranormal read.

By Kindle Customer Upon opening up my digital copy of Mr Blackwell, I was both excited and hopeful. Hopeful for an escape from the everyday. What I didn't expect was to step right into another world. To quite literally see and feel the hairs standing up on my arms and the back of my neck. This was an escape. But it was an adventure to be had. One that I willingly stepped into, and returned from as a believer. Yes, the story is THAT fascinating. By the time I'd finished the first sentence, the spell had been cast, and I was basically seeing the world through the character's eyes. And so it went. From character to character. Understanding their emotions, listening to their thoughts. Even those who played the smallest roles, had something strong to contribute. Being a gal from the south, it was second nature for me, the words and sentences were formed just as I'd been accustomed to, especially in the backwoods towns where my grandmother, her mother, and so on, had lived. I was refreshed, and returned to the days I'd spent in the smallest of towns, finding solace in words long since lost. Or so it seemed... It's so very true, people who live in such places aren't supersticous. They're AWARE. What others see in the deepest dreams, or want to forget upon waking, those who KNOW, see it in daylight, and darkness. They know the true meaning of the word "magic." And so A.B. Novak has somehow been able to capture their insight, and weave into what becomes so much more than words in a book. She's created a grimoire, a magical reference book, but the characters are so very much alive, and they do not need to turn the pages to live what doesn't have to be read. And you won't have to jump into the book's depths to understand the how's and why's of the South, or the reasosn those who reside there live, and think the way they do! I don't want to spoil this adventure for you. But know this: I rarely care for a book, find artistry in a writer, enough to review the masterpiece. Along with Novak, I'm so happy to count Blackwell on my short list of those (books and authors) who don't mind being the exception, rather than the mundane. Those willing to step outside the box that seems to be the definition of the modern paranormal. As is Novak, Blackwell is engrossing, engaging, and by far, an original. Everyone wants to go on some sort of adventure. But it's not often to be able to pick up a book, travel, and come back a changed person. One who's seen, and practically grasped, magic! So Grab a copy as soon as you can, because soon enough, you'll want to say, "I read that book, 'way back when.'" And way back when will be ancient history soon enough.

By Kelly Smith Reviews In the overused world of YA paranormal romance, CHBB Publishing has continued to raise the bar and shun the popular to bring readers amazing works that they can't find anywhere else.Mr. Blackwell is the debut novel of AB Novak, but it doesn't seem like it's a first novel. Ms. Novak's prose flows along easily with what seems like an experienced mind behind it. From page one you are drawn into the story; you find yourself in that Louisiana swamp with Vivienne, watching as Jase fires an arrow at a fish. It sounds like odd imagery, but it was really a beautiful opening.I found the characters to be delightfully unique, Jase more so than Vivienne. The curse on his family weighs him down, gives him a sense of reality despite the paranormal circumstances surrounding him. Vivienne is deep, confident, and I came to like her after I got used to her. Both of them play off each other well, and I could see them in my mind very clearly. While the curse itself and the budding romance between the characters is the central focus point of the novel (which I found to be far too short, by the way), what I think made it very enjoyable was the vivid descriptions of the characters and of Louisiana itself. Rarely in modern YA fiction do you find such wonderfully descriptive prose as I found here. Yes, the story does get a bit a adjective happy, I found it reminded me of books penned one or two hundred years ago. I miss that vividity, and was very glad to see a modern book for teens use it so well.I think that Ms. Novak is a great writer, and I was very pleased to be able to read this book! It's not overly macabre, overly mushy, or too dull. Like Goldie Locks said, "It's just right".

The Author’s Revenge!

A MUST BUY for all self-published authors, writers, scribblers, bloggers, song-writers and spin-doctors

The moment you click ‘Save and Publish’ you’re no longer on your own. You are now connected to a huge network of hundreds of thousands of fellow writers, and that feels both scary and exciting. By definition writing is a solitary profession. Writers need peace and quiet to gather their thoughts, to research, to dig deep into their subconscious for ideas. Marketers on the other hand need people, and the majority of authors are pretty poor at marketing and have absolutely no interest in it So I’ve put this book together with the assistance of a number of fellow authors who’ve all contributed a piece or two. My objectives with this book are a) to demonstrate to those just about to publish their first book the amount of work they should expect to put in afterwards, b) to perhaps offer direction, to advise on what works and what doesn’t, and, I guess c) to establish for the reader just how hard authors have to graft to promote their work, which is why I’ve included pieces from various authors, who all deserve my recognition and gratitude for demonstrating their often contradictory points of view. What worked for some, bombed when fellow authors tried the same tack, so it’s crucial that I’m true to myself and present the Indie industry in a genuinely transparent form. Thanks to these fellow authors - who’ve contributed a full 28% between them - the reader will find a variety of opposing viewpoints, conflicting assessments and impressions of the industry, and differing outlooks and perspectives. The reader will also discover that a number of authors share identical points of experiences and viewpoints. Special thanks to all contributors, but especially Harpie for baring her soul in sharing excerpts from her wacky, psycho, screwball, demented diaries with us. You’ll be hearing a lot more from Harpie in the future. WARNING: Writers can often be a precious breed of born-again goody-goodies. Me? I never ask anyone to like him. I never pretend to be anything that I’m not. I’m a handful and I know it. I’m strong-willed, a bit outspoken and I write exactly what I’m thinking. If strong language offends or you have an aversion to self-deprecating, piss-taking humour then please DO NOT buy this book, because I use these methods of bringing to light situations that just don't stack up. I truly believe that serious issues can be approached with humour, but I understand not everyone feels the same. So what, or specifically who, is the Storm that the title refers to? I’ll tell you. The Storm refers to a group of people who have no issue whatsoever with an artist hiring out a gallery and displaying his paintings. They don’t mind if a chef opens a new restaurant by inviting local residents to an opening night special, or a beautician promotes her services with the use of posters and referral specials for nails, waxing or sun beds. They don’t even mind a scuba diving club offering come-and-try-it sessions. And they certainly don’t object to a local swing band or orchestra advertising an upcoming concert. They don’t even mind their friends trying out a recently acquired capacity for wine-making on them. BUT, if a hard-working author does similar, if he/she promotes the book they’ve slaved over for the last year, this relentless and insidious enemy of all honest scribblers will have that poor author in their crosshairs in a New York heartbeat. If you’re the Storm, you’ll recognise yourself here

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An honest first class read! By All Things D This is a first class book from a first class writer who, I believe, will go along way. But wait ....this is actually the main theme underpinning this book. It looks at all the reasons why, despite being great engaging authors - better in fact than many of their traditionally published counterparts – many don’t receive the recognition they deserve or the sales figures to give up the day job. This is a book that all authors, traditionally published & self published, all aspiring writers who are thinking of publication and readers themselves should buy (because readers can learn so much about how they can help the author) and Wiggins includes many reviews and analysis of some of the best books he’s read from one star reviews he’s written – eg “I would rather be engrossed in a soup label than this atrocity,” to “must read.”First a few words about Wiggins himself. He says that some people ‘don’t get him.’ I get him completely. He’s a no bulls***, no frills kind of guy. He tells it how it is. He won’t lie and dress things up to be something else and so in that respect I think you, the reader can trust him. His style of writing is chatty banter and you feel like you’re sharing a pint of Pride with him down the King’s Head as you read along. He’s an honest fella with tons of energy and drive. He describes himself as part of the ‘Grit-Lit’ genre, “a prize piss taker” with “an inappropriate sense of humour in a world that's gone far too serious and politically correct.” He says he doesn't write about 'golden hair tarnished with rust' or 'lilies of youthful wantonness. ' Brilliant! Love it! Wiggins sees humour in the everyday mundane where most of us wouldn’t and that is his talent. One reader told him, apparently that 'he's seasoned with a hint of world weariness.' There is a sense of weariness, a feeling that we all have – when’s the lucky break coming? But we all know you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time.Everything related to writing and more is discussed here with other author contributions added. I particularly liked the chapter by Lesley Hayes who says “writing is like being in love.” He takes on the big beast Amazon and asks some pertinent questions that we have all asked for a long time. Amazon could support indies but they do nothing. They constantly back the best sellers without giving the light of day to lesser known authors. That is very sad for such a big beast of an organization that could really change lives. Amazon is stage managed just like the traditionally published world. What it boils down to, I believe is money. With astronomical budgets beyond your wildest dreams many of us could be somebody but there are no Simon Cowell ‘X Factor’ opportunities on Amazon. But as Wiggins asks “without Amazon would we survive at all?” Wiggins also takes to task the Amazon rankings system and deciphers it to show you what it all means. From this I’ve deduced that it’s rather like the unfair first past the post British electoral system.A great deal of research has gone into the book. He covers writers’ block, books titles he says are the hardest thing to write, opening sentences, hooks, areas that switch readers off, he gets inside the mind of the writer and what drives them on. He discusses the tools of social media for authors and puts Twitter to the test and mentions blog tours, he analyses forums, chat rooms in great detail, Goodreads, placing your book with the local library, etc. He encourages you to take risks with your writing. He has a go at changing the opening lines of a tale of two cities. He discusses free book promotion. He discusses whether authors should have free book offers, explaining very well both sides of argument, concluding that“well written books should not be used by the big b****y jungle as cannon fodder."At times I laughed but at times I felt desperately sad reading this book. There was a sense of helplessness and futility, a futility felt by all walks of authors. “Who do we share our feelings of sadness and accomplishment with? Wiggins asks “There is a sense of loneliness when you finish a book.” One author says “I realized I haven't got what it takes.” Out of the book though comes a sense of strong sense camaraderie among authors together in their shared plight. “We’re all in this together” Wiggins says, in Cameronian style.I was left feeling a little dispirited but with new thoughts to try and certainly a reading list of new authors to tickle my brain cells but I kept looking for hope among the maze of difficulties Wiggins discusses and so much seems completely wretched.I have given 4 stars because this is an excellent read but one down from 5 because Wiggins is prone to going off on a tangent and I think he knows it! The book could be trimmed down. I would have liked some rounding up towards the end, concise conclusions drawn, all the threads pulling together (rather than a nice discussion of his America trip!) and some sense of hope for writers to feel YES I feel energized to try new marketing methods.

The marketing of Indie books, dealing with the abusive trolls that roam, lack of respect, and the demanding effort that one puts in. It’s not easy out there in the world of self-publishing. Author Karl Wiggins give excellent advice, which is well received by hundreds, if not thousands. It gives many authors a platform for discussion. I have been a fan of this author for quite some time, as he does not hold back; his insight and humor is always refreshing. This book is a must read for any author, and I give it five stars. Wish I could give more.
