In the deep, bice, swampy waters of Louisiana, novice journalist Vivienne Gray falls head over heels in love with a man she supposed to be interviewing, Jase Blackwell. When Vivienne saves Jase’s life they are pulled into an ancient curse that has plagued the Blackwell family for years. There is a reason behind superstition. It's because it's all true. Not believing does not make it go away.

I knew Mr. Blackwell by AB Novak was of the paranormal genre, but this was so different. I've read a lot of paranormal books and none of them prepared me for Mr. Blackwell. This is AB Novak's debut novel and I'm so impressed. Everything is different from any romance novel I've ever read whether it be paranormal or contemporary.Ok, don't laugh...but when I first started reading it...it made me think of Duck Dynasty with much hotter guys and bows/arrows rather than duck calls. Please don't think this is a slur against the show or the author...I think it was the description of the family living in the swamp/woods. Well, moving on, I hope I don't offend anyone with the comparison. I love the family in this group especially Macie...she made me laugh a lot.As the story kept going, I knew there was something big going on under the surface. Being from South Louisiana myself, I know of the superstition that many of the people from there especially the older people sometimes embrace. I kept reading with my heart beating faster and faster. Every time, Jase or Mr. Blackwell and Vivienne are together, it's like a cord pulling them closer and closer together. It was amazing to read. Then when the heart pain started, all I could think is crap, this is going to get really bad! But, I couldn't put it down. I'm not usually that sort of reader...when I know something bad is going to happen, I almost hate to finish the book.I think AB Novak has a bright future ahead with writing if Mr. Blackwell is any indication of her writing talent, then I expect to hear great things. The only reason I didn't give Mr. Blackwell 5 stars is because the ending seemed really rushed. I do realize that part of that is due to the story line but I hated not having any indication of Jase and Vivienne's future. Don't let this one little thing overshadow a great book...this is just my opinion. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great original paranormal read.

By Kindle Customer Upon opening up my digital copy of Mr Blackwell, I was both excited and hopeful. Hopeful for an escape from the everyday. What I didn't expect was to step right into another world. To quite literally see and feel the hairs standing up on my arms and the back of my neck. This was an escape. But it was an adventure to be had. One that I willingly stepped into, and returned from as a believer. Yes, the story is THAT fascinating. By the time I'd finished the first sentence, the spell had been cast, and I was basically seeing the world through the character's eyes. And so it went. From character to character. Understanding their emotions, listening to their thoughts. Even those who played the smallest roles, had something strong to contribute. Being a gal from the south, it was second nature for me, the words and sentences were formed just as I'd been accustomed to, especially in the backwoods towns where my grandmother, her mother, and so on, had lived. I was refreshed, and returned to the days I'd spent in the smallest of towns, finding solace in words long since lost. Or so it seemed... It's so very true, people who live in such places aren't supersticous. They're AWARE. What others see in the deepest dreams, or want to forget upon waking, those who KNOW, see it in daylight, and darkness. They know the true meaning of the word "magic." And so A.B. Novak has somehow been able to capture their insight, and weave into what becomes so much more than words in a book. She's created a grimoire, a magical reference book, but the characters are so very much alive, and they do not need to turn the pages to live what doesn't have to be read. And you won't have to jump into the book's depths to understand the how's and why's of the South, or the reasosn those who reside there live, and think the way they do! I don't want to spoil this adventure for you. But know this: I rarely care for a book, find artistry in a writer, enough to review the masterpiece. Along with Novak, I'm so happy to count Blackwell on my short list of those (books and authors) who don't mind being the exception, rather than the mundane. Those willing to step outside the box that seems to be the definition of the modern paranormal. As is Novak, Blackwell is engrossing, engaging, and by far, an original. Everyone wants to go on some sort of adventure. But it's not often to be able to pick up a book, travel, and come back a changed person. One who's seen, and practically grasped, magic! So Grab a copy as soon as you can, because soon enough, you'll want to say, "I read that book, 'way back when.'" And way back when will be ancient history soon enough.

By Kelly Smith Reviews In the overused world of YA paranormal romance, CHBB Publishing has continued to raise the bar and shun the popular to bring readers amazing works that they can't find anywhere else.Mr. Blackwell is the debut novel of AB Novak, but it doesn't seem like it's a first novel. Ms. Novak's prose flows along easily with what seems like an experienced mind behind it. From page one you are drawn into the story; you find yourself in that Louisiana swamp with Vivienne, watching as Jase fires an arrow at a fish. It sounds like odd imagery, but it was really a beautiful opening.I found the characters to be delightfully unique, Jase more so than Vivienne. The curse on his family weighs him down, gives him a sense of reality despite the paranormal circumstances surrounding him. Vivienne is deep, confident, and I came to like her after I got used to her. Both of them play off each other well, and I could see them in my mind very clearly. While the curse itself and the budding romance between the characters is the central focus point of the novel (which I found to be far too short, by the way), what I think made it very enjoyable was the vivid descriptions of the characters and of Louisiana itself. Rarely in modern YA fiction do you find such wonderfully descriptive prose as I found here. Yes, the story does get a bit a adjective happy, I found it reminded me of books penned one or two hundred years ago. I miss that vividity, and was very glad to see a modern book for teens use it so well.I think that Ms. Novak is a great writer, and I was very pleased to be able to read this book! It's not overly macabre, overly mushy, or too dull. Like Goldie Locks said, "It's just right".
