The Author’s Revenge!

A MUST BUY for all self-published authors, writers, scribblers, bloggers, song-writers and spin-doctors

The moment you click ‘Save and Publish’ you’re no longer on your own. You are now connected to a huge network of hundreds of thousands of fellow writers, and that feels both scary and exciting. By definition writing is a solitary profession. Writers need peace and quiet to gather their thoughts, to research, to dig deep into their subconscious for ideas. Marketers on the other hand need people, and the majority of authors are pretty poor at marketing and have absolutely no interest in it So I’ve put this book together with the assistance of a number of fellow authors who’ve all contributed a piece or two. My objectives with this book are a) to demonstrate to those just about to publish their first book the amount of work they should expect to put in afterwards, b) to perhaps offer direction, to advise on what works and what doesn’t, and, I guess c) to establish for the reader just how hard authors have to graft to promote their work, which is why I’ve included pieces from various authors, who all deserve my recognition and gratitude for demonstrating their often contradictory points of view. What worked for some, bombed when fellow authors tried the same tack, so it’s crucial that I’m true to myself and present the Indie industry in a genuinely transparent form. Thanks to these fellow authors - who’ve contributed a full 28% between them - the reader will find a variety of opposing viewpoints, conflicting assessments and impressions of the industry, and differing outlooks and perspectives. The reader will also discover that a number of authors share identical points of experiences and viewpoints. Special thanks to all contributors, but especially Harpie for baring her soul in sharing excerpts from her wacky, psycho, screwball, demented diaries with us. You’ll be hearing a lot more from Harpie in the future. WARNING: Writers can often be a precious breed of born-again goody-goodies. Me? I never ask anyone to like him. I never pretend to be anything that I’m not. I’m a handful and I know it. I’m strong-willed, a bit outspoken and I write exactly what I’m thinking. If strong language offends or you have an aversion to self-deprecating, piss-taking humour then please DO NOT buy this book, because I use these methods of bringing to light situations that just don't stack up. I truly believe that serious issues can be approached with humour, but I understand not everyone feels the same. So what, or specifically who, is the Storm that the title refers to? I’ll tell you. The Storm refers to a group of people who have no issue whatsoever with an artist hiring out a gallery and displaying his paintings. They don’t mind if a chef opens a new restaurant by inviting local residents to an opening night special, or a beautician promotes her services with the use of posters and referral specials for nails, waxing or sun beds. They don’t even mind a scuba diving club offering come-and-try-it sessions. And they certainly don’t object to a local swing band or orchestra advertising an upcoming concert. They don’t even mind their friends trying out a recently acquired capacity for wine-making on them. BUT, if a hard-working author does similar, if he/she promotes the book they’ve slaved over for the last year, this relentless and insidious enemy of all honest scribblers will have that poor author in their crosshairs in a New York heartbeat. If you’re the Storm, you’ll recognise yourself here

But wait ....this is actually the main theme underpinning this book. It looks at all the reasons why, despite being great engaging authors - better in fact than many of their traditionally published counterparts – many don’t receive the recognition they deserve or the sales figures to give up the day job. This is a book that all authors, traditionally published & self published, all aspiring writers who are thinking of publication and readers themselves should buy (because readers can learn so much about how they can help the author) and Wiggins includes many reviews and analysis of some of the best books he’s read from one star reviews he’s written – eg “I would rather be engrossed in a soup label than this atrocity,” to “must read.”First a few words about Wiggins himself. He says that some people ‘don’t get him.’ I get him completely. He’s a no bulls***, no frills kind of guy. He tells it how it is. He won’t lie and dress things up to be something else and so in that respect I think you, the reader can trust him. His style of writing is chatty banter and you feel like you’re sharing a pint of Pride with him down the King’s Head as you read along. He’s an honest fella with tons of energy and drive. He describes himself as part of the ‘Grit-Lit’ genre, “a prize piss taker” with “an inappropriate sense of humour in a world that's gone far too serious and politically correct.” He says he doesn't write about 'golden hair tarnished with rust' or 'lilies of youthful wantonness. ' Brilliant! Love it! Wiggins sees humour in the everyday mundane where most of us wouldn’t and that is his talent. One reader told him, apparently that 'he's seasoned with a hint of world weariness.' There is a sense of weariness, a feeling that we all have – when’s the lucky break coming? But we all know you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time.Everything related to writing and more is discussed here with other author contributions added. I particularly liked the chapter by Lesley Hayes who says “writing is like being in love.” He takes on the big beast Amazon and asks some pertinent questions that we have all asked for a long time. Amazon could support indies but they do nothing. They constantly back the best sellers without giving the light of day to lesser known authors. That is very sad for such a big beast of an organization that could really change lives. Amazon is stage managed just like the traditionally published world. What it boils down to, I believe is money. With astronomical budgets beyond your wildest dreams many of us could be somebody but there are no Simon Cowell ‘X Factor’ opportunities on Amazon. But as Wiggins asks “without Amazon would we survive at all?” Wiggins also takes to task the Amazon rankings system and deciphers it to show you what it all means. From this I’ve deduced that it’s rather like the unfair first past the post British electoral system.A great deal of research has gone into the book. He covers writers’ block, books titles he says are the hardest thing to write, opening sentences, hooks, areas that switch readers off, he gets inside the mind of the writer and what drives them on. He discusses the tools of social media for authors and puts Twitter to the test and mentions blog tours, he analyses forums, chat rooms in great detail, Goodreads, placing your book with the local library, etc. He encourages you to take risks with your writing. He has a go at changing the opening lines of a tale of two cities. He discusses free book promotion. He discusses whether authors should have free book offers, explaining very well both sides of argument, concluding that“well written books should not be used by the big b****y jungle as cannon fodder."At times I laughed but at times I felt desperately sad reading this book. There was a sense of helplessness and futility, a futility felt by all walks of authors. “Who do we share our feelings of sadness and accomplishment with? Wiggins asks “There is a sense of loneliness when you finish a book.” One author says “I realized I haven't got what it takes.” Out of the book though comes a sense of strong sense camaraderie among authors together in their shared plight. “We’re all in this together” Wiggins says, in Cameronian style.I was left feeling a little dispirited but with new thoughts to try and certainly a reading list of new authors to tickle my brain cells but I kept looking for hope among the maze of difficulties Wiggins discusses and so much seems completely wretched.I have given 4 stars because this is an excellent read but one down from 5 because Wiggins is prone to going off on a tangent and I think he knows it! The book could be trimmed down. I would have liked some rounding up towards the end, concise conclusions drawn, all the threads pulling together (rather than a nice discussion of his America trip!) and some sense of hope for writers to feel YES I feel energized to try new marketing methods.

The marketing of Indie books, dealing with the abusive trolls that roam, lack of respect, and the demanding effort that one puts in. It’s not easy out there in the world of self-publishing. Author Karl Wiggins give excellent advice, which is well received by hundreds, if not thousands. It gives many authors a platform for discussion. I have been a fan of this author for quite some time, as he does not hold back; his insight and humor is always refreshing. This book is a must read for any author, and I give it five stars. Wish I could give more.
