From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Independent readers will identify with Monkey and Robot as the two buddies return in this romp filled with humor, kindness, and friendship. Divided into four stand-alone chapters, the stories provide kids with amusing antics of two unlikely pals as they plan for Halloween, enjoy a day at the beach, make a new friend, and figure out if it's time for breakfast or bedtime. Fun-loving, energetic, curious, and entertaining Monkey and wise, systematic, patient, and kind Robot are perfectly transparent with each other. Graphite pencil-and-ink drawings provide ample reading support with charming black-and-white illustrations. This story is ideal for children developing their own emotional intelligence and budding friendships.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Who IS Who?

“What are you thinking about?” Robot asked. “I’m thinking about what I’m going to be for Halloween,” Monkey said. “But it’s only June,” Robot said. “Halloween is four months away!” “I know,” Monkey said, “but I messed up last Halloween.” “Well,” Robot said, “most people don’t like it when you stick your fingers in their mouths.” “I was a dentist!” Monkey protested. “I know,” Robot said, “but real dentists wash their hands and wear gloves before they touch someone’s teeth.” “I should have worn my mittens,” Monkey said. “Do you want to be something scary?” Robot asked. “No,” Monkey said. “I want to be something that everybody likes.” There was a knock at the door. Robot opened it. Mrs. Harper was standing there with a big plate of cookies. “These are for you,” Mrs. Harper said, “because you fed my cat last week while I was away.”

I read it with my three-year old. He loves it too, but let's be honest here. We aren't going to read books to our kids that we don't enjoy ourselves. The horrible books get "accidentally" dropped behind the bookcase or carelessly kicked under the bed or simply thrown out in the garbage. Not Monkey and Robot though. The stories are genuinely funny and smart. Highly recommended. We get both M&R books for all of our friends who are new parents. Parenthood doesn't have to be full of tedious and dull books about fairies and crap. Monkey & Robot prove that you can tell a compelling story (or four) with heart and humor.

My 6 year old loved Monkey & Robot when we borrowed it from the library so much that when we couldn't find More of Monkey & Robot at our library I decided to buy it for him. The stories are cute and funny and perfect for my 1st grader to read by himself (or to me).
