Review Over the years I have witnessed great advances in our understanding of learning styles. Yet I have been struck with how little progress we have made in translating this research into words and practices that students and their parents can use. The books of the Mainstream Connections series are honest but positive, helpful without preaching, and they are readable but not too simplistic. I have no doubt these books will touch the hearts and minds of many, and help some lost children find good in themselves. Dr. Jeffrey W. Gilger, Purdue University Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development College of Education
I applaud Barbara Esham for finding a way to teach young children how to be more mindful. In so doing, she sets the stage for their greater well-being as adults. Dr. Ellen Langer, Harvard University, Professor of Psychology author of Mindfulness; The Power of Mindful Learning: and On Becoming an Artist: Reinventing Yourself through Mindful Creativity. --Book EndorsementKatie s dad can t spell. Max can t work under time pressure. Carolyn may never master cursive writing and David wiggles. They are typical of many students who struggle with some aspect of school. They are also lucky because each of them finds understanding or acceptance of their particular learning profiles. Whether it s the realization that famous people have sometimes been different learners, a teacher who understands that creativity counts too, or the ability to identify coping strategies, the four students put a human face on what it means to struggle in school---and how essential it is to have partners in persisting for success. Katie, Max, Carolyn, and David are good news for students, parents, and teachers who want to understand what it means to learn outside the traditional lines of school.

Dr. Tomlinson is the author of twelve books on the topics of differentiated instruction and curriculum. Her books have been translated into nine languages. --Book EndorsementDavid's teacher asks for a parent conference when David's behavior distracts the rest of the class. David, however, comes up with his own wiggle fidget cures that he shares at the meeting, combining creativity and practicality that just may help others with the wiggle fidgets. About the Author Author Barbara Esham was one of those kids who couldn't resist performing a pressure test on a pudding cup. She has always been a "free association" thinker, finding life far more interesting while in a state of abstract thought. Barbara lives on the East Coast with her three daughters. Together, in Piagetian fashion, they have explored the ideas and theories behind the definitions of intelligence, creativity, learning, and success. Barb researches and writes from her home office, in the spare time available between car pools, homework, and bedtime.
Barbara's book series, The Adventures of Everyday Geniuses, received the 2008 Parents' Choice Awards, were featured on the American Library Association Booklist, and listed on the Reading Rockets Recommended Readings.Mike Gordon illustrates the Robin Hill series and has an extensive and varied background in illustration and design. He lives with his family in Santa Barbara, California.

It's about more than just fidgety behaviors. It's about the fear every kid has of being embarrassed in class. It's about how to think about behaviors as something you can control, and how to brainstorm ways to change bad habits. It's about taking charge of what you do instead of letting your behavior take charge of you. There's a kid in my son's class who's always disruptive. He annoys my son, and I've been trying to instill a sense of compassion for the poor kid instead of condemnation. This book was really helpful in getting my boy to separate the annoying behavior from the perfectly nice kid who's doing it.Most importantly, my kid loved the book and kept reading it again and again. Then he begged me to get all the books in the series! Anything that keeps my boy excited about reading is a-ok with me!

He has asked for the rest of the series for Christmas and brought it in to school to share with his class. He said that maybe if more kids read it they can understand kids with ADHD like him. He even did a reading of it at a family get together.Great book! I am buying a copy for his teacher too.

I think it made him feel more "normal". He is going to take it with him when he meets his new 4th grade teacher so that he can talk to her about it.
