More Blueberries!, by Susan Musgrave

From School Library Journal Baby/Toddler—In short rhyming sentences, this book features two siblings who eat their way through several bowls of blueberries, earning "blueberry fingers, blueberry nose./Blueberry lips, blueberry toes." When the bowl is empty, the typeface increases with the demand for "MORE BLUEBERRIES!" The lack of a "please" will be overlooked, as the sheer joyfulness of the text and the vibrant acrylic paintings (appropriately smeared with bright blue) is infectious. Pair with Vera B. Williams's More, More, More Said the Baby (HarperCollins, 1990) while teaching babies and their caregivers the American Sign Language word for "more."

Review "A brother and sister...get their hands on too many blueberries in this board book...These tots make a bit of a mess, even letting some animals in on the purple-stained fun...[Musgrave] combines 'blueberry' with simple, toddler-friendly vocabulary for an infectious chant...Sharp-eyed readers will notice that the frog, bear, and crow that join the fun may be imaginary, if stuffed toys and bedside book are taken as clues...A great read-aloud that supports both vocabulary building and phonemic awareness." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-04-01)"A brightly illustrated, sturdy little board book featuring that most luscious and irresistible of all summer fruits...Melo's bold and beautiful acrylics on gessoed paper are a perfect match for Musgrave's text as she depicts the blueberry stained twins eating, drinking and playing their way through blueberry concoctions of all sorts. More Blueberries has great visual and tactile appeal and should prove a success with small listeners (as well as being hardy enough to resist damage from little hands and teeth!) Highly Recommended." (CM Magazine 2015-04-24)"A fun read aloud for toddler time because of the rhyming text and the expressive language." (Resource Links 2015-04-01)"The sheer joyfulness of the text and the vibrant acrylic paintings (appropriately smeared with bright blue) is infectious. Pair with Vera B. Williams’s More, More, More Said the Baby...while teaching babies and their caregivers the American Sign Language word for 'more.'" (School Library Journal 2015-07-01)

My 2.5 year old is going through a bit of a blueberry obsession, and thus I specifically sought out toddler-appropriate books about blueberries. My option were Blueberries for Sal (a classic) and this obscure "More Blueberries" book. Well, what the heck? It's not like I had a bunch of choices. I bought both.I was very pleasantly surprised by More Blueberries. It reminded me a lot of Goodnight Moon, but it featured blueberries and had better illustrations. Many kids books (especially the obscure ones) have rhymes that only half work (Pete the Cat, I'm looking at you...). You know what I mean. The words rhyme but the rhythm of the book is just off. The good ones (like Little Blue Truck flow better. Anyone can throw together lines with rhyming words and the same number of syllables, but it takes a talented author to get a consistent rhythm across the books. This is one of those books where the flow of the lines just works. The illustrations are nice. The cover is pretty representative. Bright and colorful. It has a... I wouldn't call it a "plot" -- it's not that kind of book -- but a story flow. Like Goodnight Moon, it ends with the kids going to bed. Makes for a good bedtime story.I'd recommend this to any parent, but *extra* so if your kid is into blueberries.

He is now 3 and still loves to read it. The drawings are so simplistically beautiful and the story of the kids loving blueberries always makes him smile!
