From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—A squeaking mouse sitting near a bubbling creek inspires an impromptu jungle band. A bird overhears the mouse and sings along, soon joined by a toe-tapping centipede. A monkey, a warthog, and eventually a crocodile playing his teeth like a xylophone participate in the jam session. Joyfully exhausted, the animals at last rest in a heap. To the mouse they cry, "We all helped it's true. But the person we should thank is…." The rhythmic, rhyming text is suddenly disrupted when the page turn reveals a large hippo shouting, "Me!" This unexpected participant divulges that his hiccups created the bubbling creek. The fun, colorful illustrations perfectly depict this musical romp in the jungle, which is sure to elicit some giggles. VERDICT This bubbly selection will be a hit with the storytime crowd.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ

By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: The animals of the jungle come together to make music beats with their animal sounds and create fun music. "Boom-ba-da-boom boom!" "Squeak, squeak, bubble, bubble, squeak, squeak, squeak!" But what is the hippopotamus doing?ILLUSTRATIONS: The pictures are simple for the younger crowd. They are full of bright colors and fun.REVIEW: I loved this book! I could easily see this book being used during group reading time while the children beat the rhythms that are repeated throughout. Or it could be used in a young children's music class. At home you could have so much fun saying the animal sounds with your child and making music. You need to follow the bubbles from the beginning though to fully understand the ending.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 3-7

Welcome to Candid Conversations with Connie, Volume 2! And these conversations are going to be very candid. In this book we’re only taking questions from girls! Yep, they can ask whatever they want, and I will answer from my vast knowledge and experience. (Well . . . maybe not vast.) If I don’t know the answer, I’ll ask my friend Penny. We’ve been where you are, and we know what it’s like. You’re not a little girl anymore, but you’re still years off from adulthood. You still like to play, but you also enjoy having long conversations with friends. You sometimes want to cuddle on your mom’s lap, and other times you wish she would just leave you alone. All that’s pretty normal, and you’ll see that from the questions we’re answering.

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3—An elephant couple is content just being together: living by the sea, traveling, and enjoying their closeness. In the back of their minds is the tiny glimmer of a desire for a child, but the two want to share other experiences before having a baby. Once they decide to expand their family, things do not go as planned and they become discouraged as their longed-for child remains a dream. Softly hued watercolor, pen, and ink illustrations are sweet, revealing the cheerfulness of the couple that slowly turns to disappointment and then resignation. Dreams/wishes/prayers are shown in colorful confettilike swirls that diminish in size as their hopes continue to remain unfulfilled and then explode like a sunburst at the satisfying conclusion, showing a baby elephant arriving via boat to the couple after a tumultous storm. The open-ended nature of the text and illustrations make this picture book useful as a general parent-child read-aloud or as a gentle entree into the subject of adoption. VERDICT The heartache and delight revealed in this charming tale will resonate with parents who have experienced similar circumstances.—Maryann H. Owen, Children's Literature Specialist, Mt. Pleasant, WI

I was shopping in Target when something told me to pick it up and read it when passing by. I fought back tears until my husband walked up behind me and I lost it. You see, I thought I miscarried a week ago only to find out the pregnancy is progressing. I have previously had six miscarriages so "the wish" just hit home with me. I want to go back and buy the book to remind me that destiny will happen when it's right. Whether it's by birth or adoption.

I did Clomid, IUI, IVF, FET. I got pregnant with IVF but it ended in a chemical pregnancy. I also go pregnant with the FET but miscarried at 7 weeks 4 days. We planned to give IVF another try in Sept. 2016. We moved across the country, bought a house and 2 weeks later (2 days before Christmas) I took a pregnancy test that to my complete and utter shock came back positive. I am now almost 18 weeks pregnant with our rainbow baby, a healthy baby girl we are naming Emmerson. I bought this book shortly after my miscarriage and it helped give me hope to hold on to. Now my husband and I read this book to our unborn daughter almost every day (now that she can hear us) and neither of us can make it through without crying. This book is perfect for anyone struggling or who has struggled with infertility, loss or both.We can't wait to read it to our daughter when she is here and remind her every single day how wanted and loved she is.I even bought this book for a friend who has been on a similar journey as me, to help her keep the hope alive and one day be able to read to her precious baby.

Parker This book has great artwork and a nice message. The actual words in it are actually so simple and abstract that I often elaborate the story a bit when reading it to my toddler. The first time (and subsequent times) reading it as an adult if you had a fertility struggle, it can be very emotional. My boy also loves elephants so that was a bonus for me when getting this book. Overall it is a very nice book and I recommend it.

Big Nate Strikes Again, by Lincoln Peirce

From School Library Journal Gr 3-6–Peirce's second book about Big Nate is clever and funny. For Mrs. Godfrey's newest special project, a research assignment on a great American, the sixth grader gets paired with the perfect A-plus student, Gina. Horrible as this seems, something great also occurs–Nate is picked as a Fleeceball team captain and has a chance to win the coveted Spoffy (Sports Played Only for Fun) trophy. Unfortunately, he is late to the gym when players are chosen, and Gina is on his team. The pacing of the text and the black-and-white comic-book illustrations give the story a fun and carefree rhythm. Readers will be delighted to pick this up and find great characters who will stay with them.–Patty Saidenberg, George Jackson Academy, New York City. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist Peirces mischievous grade-school hero returns for more misadventures in another blend of easy-reading narrative and comic-strip snippets modeled after the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. In an unbelievable double stroke of bad luck, Nate gets paired with the insufferable brainiac Gina on a class project and stuck with her on his otherwise championship-worthy fleeceball (indoor baseball) team. Lessons are learned and comeuppances are delivered on both sides. This is a hearty dose of low-fiber fun for boys, and Peirces cartoon tidbits make the pages fly past with punch lines galore. Grades 3-6. --Ian Chipman

Review “The millions of Wimpy Kid fans will be thrilled to find another cartoon buddy to read about, this good-hearted king of detention.” (Horn Book (starred review))“Fans will be in heaven; thank goodness number three is already on the way.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Even the most jaded middle-schooler will find much to laugh about here.” (The Horn Book)

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Great for Reluctant Readers By Book Sake Book Review for [...]I love the idea of mixing the art of comics inside a book to get kids reading. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has done that and Big Nate is also formatted in a similar way.Big Nate is a middle school student who gets into enough trouble to create interest but not so much as you wonder what in the world he's thinking. He has two buddies that are along for a laugh and often at his expense. And guess what? There is some girl trouble that keeps the story interesting. The girl in this story happens to be Gina, his archenemy. The two get paired up for a report on Ben Franklin, and that part of the story truly delivers a bit of educational content. But when they get paired up for a sports team Gina has the nerve to name the team without the okay from her team captain, Big Nate. The second book is easy enough to pick up even if you've missed the first book and it is geared for those on a 2nd to 5th grade reading level. The plot isn't heavy. It's not something that you'll learn great life lessons from. What it does, and does well, is gets kids reading who might not normally be into reading. The change from text to comic so often keeps the reader interested and moves the story along with the visual clues that some kids need when reading at this level. Don't think this one is just for boys either. My eight year-old daughter saw the book arrive and immediately offered to do the book review for me. She's next to read it!

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Big Nate Strikes Again By Beverly L. Archer I received an Advance Reader's Copy of Big Nate Strikes Again by Lincoln Pierce. I did not receive any compensation for reviewing this book.Kids who love Greg Hefley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid are going to love Nate Wright. Parents will probably like Nate better.Based on the comic strip "Big Nate" this series details the trials and tribulations of 6th grader Nate Wright. Nate finally has a chance to win the coveted SPOFFY Trophy (Sports Played Only For Fun). He's been selected as a team captain for fleeceball - an indoor version of baseball. But nothing ever goes smoothly. Kept after school by a teacher, Nate is unable to make it to the meeting to pick his team. He lucks out and his best friends Teddy and Francis are on the team, but so is his archenemy - A+ know it all Gina! Not only does he have to put up with Gina on his fleeceball team, he's paired with her on a social studies project. Can things get any worse or more hilarious? The humor in this book is definitively age appropriate. As an elementary librarian I spend a good deal of time around young children. The humor is right on target, but it's not so obnoxious (as some kid like humor - Captain Underpants for example - can be) that adults will not enjoy it as well. I love Jeff Kinney and his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. But lets be honest, I think I like Nate better. (Don't worry I'll still anxiously await any new Wimpy Kid books.) Nate is one of those likeable characters. Always up to something, but so charming you can't help but like him. If you work in a school, you know what I'm talking about. As I mentioned in the beginning, I received an Advanced Readers' Copy of this book. I liked it so much that not only am I going to recommend it to my students, I've already ordered a hard cover copy of this and the first book in the series for my library at home.Recommended for 3rd grade and up. (The AR reading level is 3.0 and even though Nate is a 6th grader, based on my experience I'm pretty sure 3rd grade and older will enjoy this book.)Mrs. Archer's rating: 5 of 5

Meet Starr: a beautiful young woman, found near death. By the grace of God, Starr is rescued, however, and taken to safety. She awakens to a new world: a world where nothing is even remotely familiar and she knows not a soul. Or does she? This Native fantasy fiction love story novel is a poignantly written, heart-felt odyssey that broadens the boundaries of love, loss, and imagination. Join Starr on her journey both inward, and to lands within our own, where she is healed by, and learns many magical lessons from the “Rock People”, who have taken her in. As you walk beside her, you may find yourself recalling a place of long ago, or even that lies ahead, as you raise your level of consciousness along your own path. The Upsider, the first of a trilogy, is breathtaking in its imagery, and transcendental by nature. It is a story of the best kind: the kind begging to be told.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Spiritual, Imaginative, Engaging By Annie K. J. The author submitted a copy of the book to me in exchange for a review. The story follows "surface dweller", or "Upsider", Starr who is found laying unconscious by a group of "Rock People" who reside in underground caverns. Among them is the young Taliah and her family. The Rock People, or Mimikwisiwuk, use magic to heal injuries, coast silently through the water, and input thoughts into another's mind. When Starr comes to, she initially panics at the sight of the unusual beings. After calming down, her curiosity takes over and she begins to learn more about the Rock People. She becomes fast friends with Phirah, Saranniah, and the others in the unusual underground utopia.Starr learns about their more naturalistic, environmentally-conscious way of life and begins to quite like it. Still, she is quite eager to go back home. Unfortunately, the decision of who comes and goes from the Rock People's secluded home rests with the leader of the group who seems to also be quite elusive to Starr. To compensate for her disappointment, Saranniah takes Starr on a tour of the most amazing parts of the underground realm. Starr is quite taken with the sights and just how much thought and planning went into each aspect of the infrastructure. There are even huge gem boulders that send glimmers of light bouncing off the walls, something that captures Starr's awe and imagination. The peacefulness, tranquility, and kindness of the Rock People is really what inspires new reflections on her own society. The more she thinks about it, the more she develops complicated feelings about whether or not she wants to return home at all. Joshua, one of the Rock People Starr meets, begins to feel much the same way; he doesn't want her to go home either. Good thing, because the Rock People's council decide to keep Starr indefinitely because she was determined to be a "Chosen One". The news initially strikes Starr as being a horrible thing, and why wouldn't it? She is eager to go back to her grandmother and though she develops an admiration for the Rock People, she also thinks of her room and her life there as being a prison sentence. She struggles to reconcile her resentment with her growing affections for Joshua. Her spiritual energy also increases as the story goes on and with every accidental touch of a gem boulder, she experiences almost an explosion of spiritual awareness. The remainder of the book follows Starr as she begins to develop a romance with Joshua and learns more about her role as a "Chosen One".The book is very much a story of discovery and self-awareness. Starr sees new and strange things she had never before imagined: underground rivers that look like crystal, giant dragonflies, advanced metallic crafts, surreal gardens, giant birds, and so much more. This book is best for a fantasy escape for readers who need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world for a few hours at a time. This will definitely be the kind of book that will provide either one whole day of a complete escape from reality if you really can't put it down, or just a few hours a day. The ideas in the book are really neat and were a lot of fun to read. I definitely recommend this to those looking for a new fantasy story to get into.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Heartfelt novel of an alternative world that holds hope and beauty By Wendy S. Mackowski It was like a vacation for me each time I sat down with my ipad to read this new novel by Isabel Hart-Cuerrier I loved the beautiful world she created , expansive and full of possibilities, that exists right under our feet without our knowledge. Even though these people are highly advanced souls who seem to have mastered the fine balance between technology and spiritual evolvement, they have nothing but compassion for the Upsiders, or humans who live on the face of our planet. The message is of hope, compassion, and a positive future. Also, knowing from the introduction that Isabel has modeled the heroine after a daughter she lost at a young age adds depth and meaning to the story. It carries the message that even though it may appear that you have lost people in your life, they have gone to a much better world full of beauty and love. I highly recommend it!

Different read to what I'm used to reading By rodman Have to say I never have read a book like this before but found it refreshing different to the adventure / thriller books I normally read. Having said that I found it an enjoyable read and a great way to pass a few afternoons while alone with my kindle. Best suited for younger readers such as the "twyhards".

The drawings at the beginning of each story are colorful and well done (as illustrated to the top left). The stories include: 'Wagon Wheel Willie', 'Six Gun Sam', 'Wanted - the Pickle Brothers', 'Trick Shot Tex' and 'Gunpowder Greg".The two I selected as my favorites are: 'Trick Shot Tex' and 'Wanted the Pickle Brothers'. I liked 'Trick Shot Tex' as the author tells about the reason for being humble. A most valuable lesson for children to learn. And, 'Wanted the Pickle Brothers' made me laugh. A really silly story to read and in addition, the brothers, Pete, Wes and Otto all learned a valuable lesson at the end of the story...Will check out some more stories by Pam Powers and see if they are all as silly and entertaining as this one. Most highly recommended.

Fifty-Seven Pieces of the Cloudcroft Puzzle feels like a piece of local New Mexico history with a string of familiar locations, pictures in places my family has pictures, and a friendly narrative voice which makes me feel at home. I enjoyed reading the collection of Anders’ monthly columns in the Cloudcroft paper, especially the humor in his chapter about Jane, his love – a truck. I’d driven in the Cloudcroft area with snow and felt the connection reading the “Welcome to the Mountains! Snow Driving 101” chapter. It was a nice retreated from the daily grind of my life back to the pace and flow of a trip up the mountains during my childhood. I enjoyed the nostalgia. One chapter about the author’s favorite New Mexico things, reads like a travel writer’s guide. A local treasure, if you’ve ever lived in the Cloudcroft basin area like me (my mother, Jo Lyn Bartz, was an Alamogordo High alumni of 1978), reading this book is like coming home. The honestly confronts some of the moral and emotional complexities of working in law enforcement and successfully communicates the ethos of a small mountain town in the desert. Billy, thank you for your service with the police force and for giving the local history of Cloudcroft a narrative voice! Worth the read!

Smith This is Billy Anders' second publication, the first detailing his experiences as a police helicopter pilot in "Foxtrot, We're on the Way"; and now he has again provided an authentic, deeply personal, and very captivating look into his cornucopia of broader and fascinating life experiences. Although the essence of the book conveys his unique life and times as a Deputy Sheriff around the Village of Cloudcroft NM, and the beautiful mountain setting of the Lincoln National Forest; he sprinkles in anecdotes ranging from his Mississippi upbringing, to sailing across the Gulf of Mexico, and traipsing across this wonderful country in his old Shasta camper. You will experience a rainbow of human insight, tear jerking tragedies, small and large triumphs, and an overall deep appreciation of a very rich and well lived life. This is a book that continues to deliver seemingly new perspectives every time you read it, just like a good old classic movie. Well done, Billy Anders

By Big Daddy A woeful book, if you know the background story, which is not repeated in the book. Most of the residents in this part of the Sacramento Mountains know the larger story ... I'll not try to repeat it here ...The book is an easy read, written as a series of somewhat melancholy anecdotes, and it definitely held my interest ... I have not yet read through to the last page, which I expect to do, but I can say the book is clearly written and is easy to read. I live in the Sacramento Mountains and many of the places described are familiar to me ... whether the book would have the same appeal to me if that were not the case, I don't know ...Probably worth 3 1/2 stars, but I think 4 stars would be a stretch ...
