Meet Starr: a beautiful young woman, found near death. By the grace of God, Starr is rescued, however, and taken to safety. She awakens to a new world: a world where nothing is even remotely familiar and she knows not a soul. Or does she? This Native fantasy fiction love story novel is a poignantly written, heart-felt odyssey that broadens the boundaries of love, loss, and imagination. Join Starr on her journey both inward, and to lands within our own, where she is healed by, and learns many magical lessons from the “Rock People”, who have taken her in. As you walk beside her, you may find yourself recalling a place of long ago, or even that lies ahead, as you raise your level of consciousness along your own path. The Upsider, the first of a trilogy, is breathtaking in its imagery, and transcendental by nature. It is a story of the best kind: the kind begging to be told.

The author submitted a copy of the book to me in exchange for a review. The story follows "surface dweller", or "Upsider", Starr who is found laying unconscious by a group of "Rock People" who reside in underground caverns. Among them is the young Taliah and her family. The Rock People, or Mimikwisiwuk, use magic to heal injuries, coast silently through the water, and input thoughts into another's mind. When Starr comes to, she initially panics at the sight of the unusual beings. After calming down, her curiosity takes over and she begins to learn more about the Rock People. She becomes fast friends with Phirah, Saranniah, and the others in the unusual underground utopia.Starr learns about their more naturalistic, environmentally-conscious way of life and begins to quite like it. Still, she is quite eager to go back home. Unfortunately, the decision of who comes and goes from the Rock People's secluded home rests with the leader of the group who seems to also be quite elusive to Starr. To compensate for her disappointment, Saranniah takes Starr on a tour of the most amazing parts of the underground realm. Starr is quite taken with the sights and just how much thought and planning went into each aspect of the infrastructure. There are even huge gem boulders that send glimmers of light bouncing off the walls, something that captures Starr's awe and imagination. The peacefulness, tranquility, and kindness of the Rock People is really what inspires new reflections on her own society. The more she thinks about it, the more she develops complicated feelings about whether or not she wants to return home at all. Joshua, one of the Rock People Starr meets, begins to feel much the same way; he doesn't want her to go home either. Good thing, because the Rock People's council decide to keep Starr indefinitely because she was determined to be a "Chosen One". The news initially strikes Starr as being a horrible thing, and why wouldn't it? She is eager to go back to her grandmother and though she develops an admiration for the Rock People, she also thinks of her room and her life there as being a prison sentence. She struggles to reconcile her resentment with her growing affections for Joshua. Her spiritual energy also increases as the story goes on and with every accidental touch of a gem boulder, she experiences almost an explosion of spiritual awareness. The remainder of the book follows Starr as she begins to develop a romance with Joshua and learns more about her role as a "Chosen One".The book is very much a story of discovery and self-awareness. Starr sees new and strange things she had never before imagined: underground rivers that look like crystal, giant dragonflies, advanced metallic crafts, surreal gardens, giant birds, and so much more. This book is best for a fantasy escape for readers who need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world for a few hours at a time. This will definitely be the kind of book that will provide either one whole day of a complete escape from reality if you really can't put it down, or just a few hours a day. The ideas in the book are really neat and were a lot of fun to read. I definitely recommend this to those looking for a new fantasy story to get into.

Mackowski It was like a vacation for me each time I sat down with my ipad to read this new novel by Isabel Hart-Cuerrier I loved the beautiful world she created , expansive and full of possibilities, that exists right under our feet without our knowledge. Even though these people are highly advanced souls who seem to have mastered the fine balance between technology and spiritual evolvement, they have nothing but compassion for the Upsiders, or humans who live on the face of our planet. The message is of hope, compassion, and a positive future. Also, knowing from the introduction that Isabel has modeled the heroine after a daughter she lost at a young age adds depth and meaning to the story. It carries the message that even though it may appear that you have lost people in your life, they have gone to a much better world full of beauty and love. I highly recommend it!

Different read to what I'm used to reading By rodman Have to say I never have read a book like this before but found it refreshing different to the adventure / thriller books I normally read. Having said that I found it an enjoyable read and a great way to pass a few afternoons while alone with my kindle. Best suited for younger readers such as the "twyhards".
