About the Author Pamela O'Hara , writing under the pen name Dianne Cooper, spent more than two decades incarcerated in prisons across the country for non-violent crimes, all while proclaiming her innocence. You never know the struggles that others are faced with until they tell their story. I cried as I read all that Dianne had to encounter. I applaud her decision to stand up for herself and always thinking about how it would affect her children. I could not have owned up to something I know I wasn't guilty of. God knows the plans that He has for our life. She may not understand it now but she will after while. Thanks for sharing. With love.

They are great for reading aloud, and great for kids starting to read. The simple words and memorable rhythm helped him memorize it quickly and gain confidence with trying to read other, harder books. These board books are nicely made as well and a great size.The reason I did not rate this one five stars is that it's missing the little joke with one of them being asleep until the last page when all the others are asleep, and we were disappointed. It's our favorite part about Kittens and Chicks.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is SO clever! By D. Jennings Martin McKenna's first picture book, and we hope it's the first of many! The story is of a little boy named Edgar who receives an octopus for a pet when he wanted a puppy. He's disappointed when Jarvis the octopus doesn't behave like a puppy but eventually learns to appreciate his unique qualities...(Edgar says "play dead!" and Jarvis appears dressed as a mummy....wonderful!) All the humor is in the illustrations which are absolutely priceless....even the endpapers. ESPECIALLY the endpapers....must include a photo or two, hope it's not a spoiler for anyone....octopus as HAMLET! As ELVIS! And look at the underground scene in the lower left corner...escaped convict! Plenty for both the kids and the parents to appreciate here. And yes, there is a lesson, but not a beat-you-over-the-head-with-it Teachable Moment sort of thing...... The Octopuppy is just great fun.

Delightful Decompression By susan mcallister We read this book to our grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbor kids - anyone, just so we can spend time with Octopuppy's illustrations! They are so imaginative and sparkling. We love the colors, the attention to details, the candidness. As importantly, the story of Edgar is precious - one of the significance of friendship; the importance of its permanence; and the need for working to keep it intact. Such an important message in today's seemingly impermanent world, especially for children. This book has resonated with every child we've read it to, including adult children! We're hoping that McKenna will create further loving stories and creative art. Thanks!

For me, this unique children’s book contains important reflections about appreciating and enjoying what one has. It also encourages the reader to be mindful to those close by, whose feelings can often be forgotten, while welcoming and celebrating the wonderful variety of characters we have in the world, and all that they have to offer. A humourous, heartwarming tale. We would love to see more of Octopuppy.

Some of the poem are gritty (Reflections in the Teardrop of A Child, People on The Seamy Side of Life), others whimsical (Bobby, Dream Street), thought provoking (The Lizard, Plain Speaking, Unique), and romantic (Touch, Send A Smile). Overall, a satisfying blend of poetry that inspires, captures one's imagination and give's one something to think about. This book is really special.

All have a nice flow to them, and are easy to read. They made me think and many put a smile on my face.

Instead of a collection of random poems, this is organized in chapters each one on a different theme, each theme is a stage of life. All of the poems in that chapter are on that theme but they all relate to the overall theme stages of life. It's like reading a novel where you see a character go through their stages of life. It's an Incredible experience.

By Brynnlux Perfect for toddlers and pre-k, the board book version was perfect for my 3 year old daughter to help her remember not to yell. We are still working on this but I have noticed definite improvement since we read this together. The paperback version is a longer version for older kids and I think I will be ordering that soon, since this book is very simplified.I honestly think parents and caregivers sometimes need reminding too, and this is a great book for the family to remember to lower the volume.Now if I tell my daughter, "voices are not for yelling" or "i can't hear you when you yell" she instantly knows what I mean and usually stops and tries to calm down and tell me in a calm voice.

It explains how yelling affects others, and is a nice reminder for parents who read to their children, as well, ha ha. I love the tips in the back for parents and caregivers. The book uses simple language and the illustrations really expand on the ideas they are presenting. My child was also given tips on how to calm down when he does become angry, which I also love. Instead of just saying, "DON'T!" It says something similar to, "Here, this behavior will help in place of yelling." I love that children's feelings are acknowledged and they are given choices to control their reactions/environment a bit. I recommend these books to anyone who loves to read to their children...and are interested in reinforcing manners.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book, great lesson for kids! By the Guru I got this for my 18 month old daughter. she loves this book. it has a nice gentle lesson throughout. Not much text , so dont expect a storybook with rhyming words, this is more of a picture book with 1 or 2 words per page, but with about 3-4 pages of "lessons" about not yelling. I think my daughter likes the images which are very bright and catchy. We got the hard board book which is a standard board book size.

This gentle read is the product of a bedtime story created by Dave Bettinger for his stepdaughter, Barbara, along with illustrations by 17-year-old Christina Fletcher. While there were many promising avenues in this mystery, the plot fails to gel and has several loose ends. Bordering on fantasy but never crossing the line, the conclusion of the tale falls flat. From the Author      Crystal and Breanna: The Secret of Blackridge Farm, was born in 2006 when then eight-year-old, second-grader Barbara asked her stepdad to tell her a bedtime story. "Once upon a time..." he began, "there was a girl named... what should her name be?"      "Crystal!" Barbara answered, pointing to her new American Girl® doll.      "There was a girl named Crystal. And she was... how old?"      "Eleven!" Barbara responded.      After four nights of building the story with Barbara's promptings, the two decided they should begin writing it down to preserve it.      The Secret of Blackridge Farm is the result of those bedtime stories, unfolding night after night for roughly three months. Barbara decided what types of girls Crystal and Breanna should be: what ages, hair color, personalities, etc., they should have, and that they should own horses; while Dave provided many of the scenarios in which the girls would find themselves.      The beauty that Barbara found, and that her eleven-year-old sister, Alexi, now finds in the story of Crystal and Breanna, is simple: It could all be real! Two ordinary girls, in slightly extraordinary circumstances, learn about life, responsibility, and caring for others while embarked upon a fantastic journey together.

In fact, it is a fun way to unleash imaginatively what your kids have begged for every night before lights out. This author has quite a creative mind and she fashions a world that is truly unique--the type of world that many kids wish they could find someday. Enjoy this for light reading--read it to your own kids!

There is plenty of intrigue, with secret places, discoveries, and subtle lessons to be learned. I also love the way Barbara and Dave slipped in integrity, and care of the animals. I am looking forward to reading the next installment!
