This little group of animal friends get the full tour and find only fun and comfort and friendly teachers just like themselves. I did wonder what was illustrated in the first window on the cover. But all was revealed in the end ;)

THE SERIES Grandmother Tells is a series of children's books that are the ultimate response to a young child’s request, “Grandmother, tell me a story!” These children's Kindle Books feature a grandmother and her loving recollection of her grandchild’s growing-up years, from when he was a new baby and even before he was born, all made alive with lovely illustrations in bright watercolor. In Grandmother Tells Series, Orly Assa succeeds, through her short stories and poems for kids, in “beautifully and precisely describing the varied emotions that grandparents go through (Amos Halfon, Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, family and couple therapist, and a proud grandfather). This grandparenting series provides an endless source of warmly shared moments for adults and kids alike. The controlled vocabulary of these children’s books makes reading easy for beginning readers. Whether they are enjoyed in a lap or across the miles, Grandmother Tells early-childhood books make thoughtful gifts for new parents, grandparents, and grandchildren ages 4 and up. These stories for kids are at once a good source of baby shower ideas. THE BOOK Grandmother records an important family-life event: the grandchild’s birthday—and the grown-ups’ excitement over the picture-taking and the blowing-out of the birthday candles, from which the child, to their disappointment, shies away. In this fifth book of the series, Grandmother joyfully reminds her grandchild of just how the day unfolded.

By ehud dayan To the bookshelf of children’s literature, we are adding the series Grandma Tells byOrlyAssa, a new and creative author in this genre. Orly has written stories that are told to grandchildren by their grandparents.Up till now, only a few books have been created for grandparents and grandchildren. This genre is crying for more stories and poems to deepen and develop the importance of the connection that is dear to everyone, including the parents. It offers substance and strengthens the flow of this connection from generation to generation. Through its stories, grandparents can share more of their own values with their grandchildren. In addition, these stories bring another opportunity to enrich the language and verbal skills that are so important in children’s development. For this purpose this book was created. One value of these stories is that they are universal. They are worthy to be read in every society at any time and place.Moshe Alon, educational psychologist, family therapist.

Suhr It's a cute story, but it desperately needs editing, not just for grammatical errors, but for continuity as well. For example, a few pages in, she introduces the mother, named Violet, presumably because of the purple mane and tail, but on the next page she either calls her Sunbeam or randomly introduces another character mid-sentence that never shows up again in the story. For .99 it's a cute story. It had the potential to be better, though.

Who IS Who?

“What are you thinking about?” Robot asked. “I’m thinking about what I’m going to be for Halloween,” Monkey said. “But it’s only June,” Robot said. “Halloween is four months away!” “I know,” Monkey said, “but I messed up last Halloween.” “Well,” Robot said, “most people don’t like it when you stick your fingers in their mouths.” “I was a dentist!” Monkey protested. “I know,” Robot said, “but real dentists wash their hands and wear gloves before they touch someone’s teeth.” “I should have worn my mittens,” Monkey said. “Do you want to be something scary?” Robot asked. “No,” Monkey said. “I want to be something that everybody likes.” There was a knock at the door. Robot opened it. Mrs. Harper was standing there with a big plate of cookies. “These are for you,” Mrs. Harper said, “because you fed my cat last week while I was away.”

I read it with my three-year old. He loves it too, but let's be honest here. We aren't going to read books to our kids that we don't enjoy ourselves. The horrible books get "accidentally" dropped behind the bookcase or carelessly kicked under the bed or simply thrown out in the garbage. Not Monkey and Robot though. The stories are genuinely funny and smart. Highly recommended. We get both M&R books for all of our friends who are new parents. Parenthood doesn't have to be full of tedious and dull books about fairies and crap. Monkey & Robot prove that you can tell a compelling story (or four) with heart and humor.

My 6 year old loved Monkey & Robot when we borrowed it from the library so much that when we couldn't find More of Monkey & Robot at our library I decided to buy it for him. The stories are cute and funny and perfect for my 1st grader to read by himself (or to me).

Dreams of Freedom: In Words and Pictures - in association with Amnesty International UK, by Amnesty International

From School Library Journal Gr 2–6—This title offers a series of quotes from writers and human-rights champions, loosely arranged around the theme "Dreams of Freedom." Each selection occupies a spread and is accompanied by art from an internationally acclaimed artist. For example, "Freedom to be a child" is illustrated by Birgitta Sif and depicts a child's bedroom at night, with two youngsters in a tent reading by lantern light. Mikhail Bakunin's accompanying quotation reads, "Children are neither the property of their parents nor even the world. They belong only to their own future freedom." "Freedom to Learn" pairs a Malala Yousafzai quote ("I don't mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is education and I am afraid of no one.") with Roger Mello's illustration that shows an overhead view of a child reading a book with a monkey on the prow of a large ship in the midst of a fantastical sea of colors. While there is no real narrative, the pairings provide a landing place for readers to stop and consider the message the words contain. A foreword touches on the mission and the purpose of the book (all proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International), and there is a brief biography for each writer and illustrator. VERDICT While not an essential purchase, this inspirational title is a worthwhile selection for large collections.—Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, MN

Words and illustrations to help us cherish our freedom By Jed Shlackman This unique book explores the idea and experience of freedom with a variety of quotes and illustrations, compiled from a variety of artists and writers. The book is hardcover and not that long, with a reading level recommended for age 8 and up. The depth of some of the quotes may go beyond the comprehension level of 3rd graders. Still, there is something here for people of all ages, and I like the idea of a book for children to celebrate freedom. Some of the people quoted are well known and others aren't. There is a section in the back of the book with bios of all the writers and illustrators featured in this book. This book is raising funds for Amnesty International and would make a great choice for educational settings.

By Mary Ann The selections of great thoughts are only matched by the diverse art pieces that accompany them. This really is a book for all ages. From its youngest "readers" who will explore the colors and lines of the pages, to those with the wisdom of the ages, this volume is a pleasure. I read it straight through, and its impact built with every page. It will be just as affecting to dip into, and contemplate the pages independently. At the back are short, small-print biographies of each contributor, that can act as springboards to further investigation. This volume belongs in both homes and classrooms, for sharing and personal perusal.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Rather abstract By Dienne I didn’t find this book as inspiring as I’d hoped it would be. Many of the quotes are rather weak and most are over the heads of younger kids. Also, while some of the quotes are from very famous people like Nelson Mandela and Harriet Tubman, others are from rather obscure people. In some cases, kids will certainly benefit from learning about these people, such as Nadia Anjuman and Aung San Suu Kyi, who have struggled for rights and suffered because of it. But others are just plain obscure such as Clare Balding, a British broadcaster and retired jockey. The book intends to explore different kinds of freedom. Some are freedom from, such as freedom from fear. Others are freedom to, such as freedom to be a child. Each concept is illustrated with a relevant quote and a picture by a famous illustrator. Both the quotes and the pictures are a mixed bag. For instance, the picture that goes with the freedom to learn quote features a boat that shows people with dark skin lying in stacked hammocks – a little too reminiscent of a slave ship for my tastes. The freedom to enjoy life and liberty page is illustrated with a bird in a cage and a cat peering rather ominously into the cage. Not sure how long that bird will get to “sing wildly” once it breaks out of that cage. The freedom through equality page features a quote by Chief Standing Bear of the Ponca Tribe and a picture of an American Indian looking person (which person looks rather androgynous). I have to wonder what qualification R. Gregory Christie has to be drawing people of native backgrounds (is he Indian himself?) and how much research he did.On the other hand, some of the illustrations are quite delightful. The freedom from fear page shows a timid mouse tiptoeing through a menacing forest with threatening faces hidden among the leaves and trees. The freedom to be yourself page shows six delightfully unique individuals (although that quote is one of the weaker ones, in my opinion). The freedom to make a difference page (the quote for which is Amnesty International’s slogan – “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”) shows a lighted candle holding a little boy and protecting him from the monsters in the darkness.I read this with my six and eight year old daughters. The younger one just listened and absorbed, but I’m not sure how much sunk in. My older one asked, on nearly every page, “What does that mean?” We had some interesting talks about the different kinds of freedom, but again, I’m not really sure how much sank in. Actually, it was more me talking. Neither kid was terribly enthusiastic after reading the book and they both said the book was so-so. I’m glad to have the book for free, but if I were to pay for it, I’d just consider it more of a donation.

By Mica Jade I loved this book, staying up all night to read it cover to cover when I got it. Despite not being much of a mystery fan, I eventually read my soft cover copy of The Triple Hoax to shreds. Good stuff!

When Nancy, Bess, and George visit Nancy's aunt they stumble onto another mystery. They follow a lead to Mexico, where a little girl is kidnapped. Again Nancy finds herself in another tight spot. The plot will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time reading the book.

A Silly and Very Seventies Nancy Drew Mystery By eagletwo When I was at the bookstore last week, I was perusing through the hardcover Nancy Drew titles and was drawn to the attractiveness of the internal artwork in later volumes. I ended up purchasing Nancy Drew #57: "The Triple Hoax" mystery story. It was published in 1979 and, my, it does have a definite seventies flair! I've never read such a *casual* Nancy Drew mystery--I don't know how else to describe it. Nancy and her two best friends, cousins Bess and George (both girls), start out investigating the trail of a con man who duped a relative's friend out of a large sum of money. This leads to their tailing the Hoaxters, a troupe of dishonest magicians who prey on the audience members who come to their shows. Picking up clues left and right, Nancy, Bess, and George end up in Mexico City, and simultaneously begin working on a case involving a kidnapped nine-year-old girl. Nancy believes the kidnapping is related to the Hoaxters somehow, but she must prove it, and find the girl before too much time passes!Really, as I read the book, I found the story to be somewhat silly in that, not only is Nancy Drew touted as an amateur detective, but suddenly so are Bess and George! Originally, they always were just Nancy's best "chums" who helped her solve HER mysteries. In the older ND mysteries I've read, Bess and George were not generally referred to amateur detectives in their own right (and certainly did not have an "amateur detective allowance" given them by their parents, as George refers to hers in this book!). Also, in this story, the girls are given lodging almost everywhere without question, and everyone who is not a 'bad' character seems to trust them immediately. Some of the older Nancy Drew books were multi-faceted and could be enjoyed on a less superficial level by adults as well as youths, but this story I think definitely fits the 9-12 age bracket. While the artwork was very appealing to come across in the text, and the subtle seventies vibe was very groovy, there are certainly better-written, less goofy, and less oddly convoluted ND books to read than this one.

Review Over the years I have witnessed great advances in our understanding of learning styles. Yet I have been struck with how little progress we have made in translating this research into words and practices that students and their parents can use. The books of the Mainstream Connections series are honest but positive, helpful without preaching, and they are readable but not too simplistic. I have no doubt these books will touch the hearts and minds of many, and help some lost children find good in themselves. Dr. Jeffrey W. Gilger, Purdue University Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development College of Education

I applaud Barbara Esham for finding a way to teach young children how to be more mindful. In so doing, she sets the stage for their greater well-being as adults. Dr. Ellen Langer, Harvard University, Professor of Psychology author of Mindfulness; The Power of Mindful Learning: and On Becoming an Artist: Reinventing Yourself through Mindful Creativity. --Book EndorsementKatie s dad can t spell. Max can t work under time pressure. Carolyn may never master cursive writing and David wiggles. They are typical of many students who struggle with some aspect of school. They are also lucky because each of them finds understanding or acceptance of their particular learning profiles. Whether it s the realization that famous people have sometimes been different learners, a teacher who understands that creativity counts too, or the ability to identify coping strategies, the four students put a human face on what it means to struggle in school---and how essential it is to have partners in persisting for success. Katie, Max, Carolyn, and David are good news for students, parents, and teachers who want to understand what it means to learn outside the traditional lines of school.

It's about more than just fidgety behaviors. It's about the fear every kid has of being embarrassed in class. It's about how to think about behaviors as something you can control, and how to brainstorm ways to change bad habits. It's about taking charge of what you do instead of letting your behavior take charge of you. There's a kid in my son's class who's always disruptive. He annoys my son, and I've been trying to instill a sense of compassion for the poor kid instead of condemnation. This book was really helpful in getting my boy to separate the annoying behavior from the perfectly nice kid who's doing it.Most importantly, my kid loved the book and kept reading it again and again. Then he begged me to get all the books in the series! Anything that keeps my boy excited about reading is a-ok with me!

He has asked for the rest of the series for Christmas and brought it in to school to share with his class. He said that maybe if more kids read it they can understand kids with ADHD like him. He even did a reading of it at a family get together.Great book! I am buying a copy for his teacher too.

I think it made him feel more "normal". He is going to take it with him when he meets his new 4th grade teacher so that he can talk to her about it.
