About the Author Floyd Cooper started drawing when he was three years old and has never stopped. He has been awarded the Coretta Scott King Award for The Blacker the Berry, three Coretta Scott King Honors for Brown Honey in Broomwheat Tea, Meet Danitra Brown, and I Have Heard of a Land, and an NAACP image award. He was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and graduated with a degree in fine arts from the University of Oklahoma.

Gorgeous illustrations By elledent Max and the Tag-Along Moon is gorgeously illustrated with several neat details that create a rich reading experience for both children and their parents. One example: the publisher info and disclaimers opposite the title page are in the shape of a moon. I've read this book to my 20 month old daughter several times, and while I'm sure most of the story is lost on her, the prose on each page is brief enough it doesn't lose her interest. Also, there is a car and a moon on nearly every page, so she enjoys pointing to and labeling those. Older children (probably up to age five) will enjoy pointing out the sign with an arrow pointing the way home on nearly every page. The story takes place at night, and the pictures have a grainy quality to them like you would find in a low-light photograph--I thought that was a nice touch.The story itself is simple and summarized in its entirety in the publisher's synopsis above. Basically, Max says goodbye to his Granpa and points out the moon, then notices, on his long journey home, that the moon never disappears. He decides that every time he looks at the moon, he will remember his Granpa.The story was sweet (if a bit dull) and was three stars; the beautiful illustrations were five stars.

I am a professional nanny in LA for many years, and have read countless children books. This one was recently handed to me by a 4 year old boy. It was one in his collection. I loved that it deals with the real pain of separation, but in the kindest, gentlest way for young hearts. I love that the protagonist is a brown skinned boy, usually so very lacking in mainstream children's books. I highly recommend it.

Grandpa told Max that they would always shine for him just like he would always be in his heart. Max kept his eye on the moon knowing that his grandpa loved him. Cooper wrote and illustrated this book which promises to be a bedtime classic. 5 stars
