Humorous story, beautiful artwork and great lesson By Helpful Advice ‘Meet the Dullards’, a children book written by Sara Pennypacker and illustrated by Daniel Salmieri, certainly is not an extra boring edition as it’s written on the cover - quite the contrary, this is a very humorous title that will cheer up and make laugh young and adult readers with its text and artwork.The Dullards, as one can see from the cover, seem like the most boring family ever, with the appearance of their faces, the behavior, clothes and thinking. But luckily their three kids are just the opposite - they want to read, want to play outside, do not want to do only the things their parents want.Because of that, their boring parents will decide to move to some other place, hoping that this will help kids to change, to become equally predictable and boring just how they parents are and want them to be.However, moving to the new location will not change things, and mischievous children who will not speak a single word during the whole book, with their behavior will make the parents finally understand them, while many times bringing the smiles on reader lips…This is first Sara Pennypacker book I read, though for sure will not be the last given how well-made, charming and humorous ‘Meet the Dullards’ book is. The author delivered a fantastic and highly interesting story about what it means to be different and to be a child – something that all the children around the world will understand and enjoy.Beside beautiful story and good lesson it brought, this children book is complemented with great-looking detailed, multicolored and humorous Salmieri’s illustrations made in gouache, watercolor and pencil techniques.Therefore, taking into account charming and humorous story, beautiful artwork and great lesson it brought, ‘Meet the Dullards’ is certainly picture book that can highly be recommended equally for all the elements that make some book for children great, something that will make children laugh, sometimes even too much for such great bedtime story.

By Kathleen Ritter The first thing that strikes you when you read “Meet the Dullards” are Daniel Salmieri’s humorous cartoon-style drawings of the Dullard family. I couldn’t keep my eyes off their eyes, bulging off their pillar-like bodies impossibly supported by toothpick legs – hilarious! The story is very funny as well. The Dullards are a backwards family; the children are encouraged to be dull and boring. Any attempt at creativity or learning is punished. The children are only allowed to watch television if it is unplugged; they can eat only vanilla ice cream. Your children will love watching the three Dullard children try to sneak fun into their lives while their parents despair.

I liked its concept and the children I shared with did also. The Dullards presents another point of view for sure that some people might not enjoy but we thought it was great fun. I liked how the children I read to were able to pick out the funny pictures and parts. It is just as cute as could be. We all enjoyed it a lot.
