This is a unique and sophisticated book unlike any other. It would be an excellent resource for life science lessons on animal and human characteristics. The sly humor, engaging storytelling and layered narrative also make it a terrific mystery read.

When the queen's shadow goes missing at a royal party, all of the guests become suspects. Was it Sir Chameleon? Captain Shark? Dr. Pigeon? Each of the eight guests is questioned and eventually cleared by the queen's royal detective, Mantis Shrimp. The text and the illustrations are pleasantly surprising and will hold readers' attention throughout. Playful and even complex in places, the language has an old-fashioned feeling reminiscent of folklore and fairy tales, with a dollop of detective fiction mixed in ("'It would seem this freeloading floater IS rather far-reaching.'"). Concisely presented sidebars provide facts about the vision of each of the accused creatures, covering topics such as compound eyes, trifocal vision, and tube feet. Large, pen-and-ink illustrations, colored in Photoshop, fill the page, with an effect verging on the surreal. Back matter provides additional information about human vision and more about the featured animals. Pair this title with Steve Jenkins's Eye to Eye: How Animals See the World (Houghton Mifflin, 2014) for further discussion of vision. The Queen is having a party with several guests. Suddenly, the room goes dark. When the lights are restored the Queen is shocked to discover that someone has stolen her shadow. Every guest is suspect. Through questioning each is able to add one more piece to the puzzle until two little urchins, in all their innocence, shyly reveal the embarrassing and humorous truth.The story reminded me of the old rhyme “This is the House that Jack Built” moving through each character until the final solution. I enjoyed how the author used animals not only different in appearance, but incorporated each animal’s unique abilities and perspectives to shed light on the problem.I especially enjoyed the additional information provided on each animal at the end of the story—a great teaching tool for parents/teachers and child to explore further the differences in animals.A beautiful story of how our differences make us unique, and when pooled together we can accomplish great things.Highly recommended.I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Not for 7 year-olds -- and not all that interesting for adults By Joki I bought this for my 7 year-old granddaughter but when trying to read it to her, she just lost interest too quickly. it is very wordy and the pictures aren't that compelling -- sort of dull colored and in a style that is a bit weird. I had hoped it would be a little simpler to understand for a younger child (the description says ages 7-11). My granddaughter is a very good reader--3rd grade level--not to brag or anything ;o) -- but she was just bored by it. Maybe when she's a little older it will be interesting to her. But since it will sit on her shelf for years, she likely will just pass it by.

When the Queen’s shadow is stolen, each creature contributes a piece of evidence that helps to solve the crime.Designed for ages 7 through 11, the ingenious story masterfully incorporates factual information about animal sight while telling an engaging story.Young weaves together distinctive collages of digital, pen-and-ink illustrations. Of particular note are the close-ups demonstrating how animals such as the pigeon sees.Younger children may have difficulty distinguishing the factual information about vision from the imaginary aspects related to losing a shadow. As such, this is a book that would work better in a small group learning environment than as a book for independent reading.At the end of the book, factual information is provided about how vision works along with descriptions of the animals in the book. The backmatter also includes a useful glossary.This informational picture book provides endless possibilities for library-classroom partnerships. Involve children in writing their own stories about how animals see. Or, ask them to research other animals senses and write detective stories about those.
