About the Author Cal Ripken, Jr. was a shortstop and third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles for his entire career (1981-2001), a rare occurrence in Major League Baseball today. Nicknamed "The Iron Man" for his relentless work ethic and reliability on the field, Ripken is most remembered for playing a record 2,632 straight games over 17 seasons, shattering the record previously held by Lou Gehrig at 2,131. He was a 19-time All Star and is considered to be one of the best shortstops professional baseball has ever seen. In 2007 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, after earning the third highest voting percentage in Hall of Fame history. Mr. Ripken is CEO of Ripken Baseball, Inc., (www.RipkenBaseball.com), a company dedicated to growing the game of baseball at the grassroots level, and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation (www.RipkenFoundation.org), which uses baseball as a tool to help underserved youth. Ferguson When my son played on the youth baseball team it was often embarrassing just sitting in the stands watching him play. Sometimes it was just not comfortable because parents often got rowdy. Their son or daughter was the best on the team, deserved to play a desired position, and mom and dad didn't like the way the ump was calling the balls and strikes, not to mention the hits and outs on the playing field. And SQUEEZE PLAY shares many of the same moments in this play-by-play action packed story.Besides being in a batting slump during a Grand Slam Tournament, Corey Maduro experiences the mounting pressure from Katelyn Moss, teammate, who desperately wants his center-field position. It sounds like an opportunity to seize the moment while he's down.But that's not all. Besides peer pressure and not playing good baseball, Corey's dad goes bonkers in the stands like a wild man. Along with other parents they engage in shouting matches during the game. And what is poor Corey, the main character in this story suppose to do? There were moments when he felt like crawling into a hole. But will that solve anything? A difficult question to answer.Using his experience as a former major league baseball player, Cal Ripken, Jr. does an excellent job in delighting baseball fans with this down to earth grassroots action-packed, funny story. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Squeeze Play is a Home Run By James Nieves Thoroughly enjoyed the latest Ripken/Cowherd book. Squeeze Play takes me back to a time and place, when as a young boy, playing baseball was all I ever wanted to do. The imagery contained in the book and the ultimate message delivered still resonates with me today as it did many years ago when I was 12. Squeeze Play is a terrific book which teaches many valuable lessons about winning and losing; about teammates and coaches; about playing for the love of the game; but most importantly about the true parent/child relationships we all seek (and continue to seek) in life.
